You could try to polish the area using KlearScreen. It might improve the LCD
and reduce the crack.

You need to pull the daughter card with the processor on it.

!!!Gently!!! pry up the daughter card with a small screwdriver from the
hdd side, it should come out with very minimal resistance.

Here's a site with some
guidance.

I've done this a number of times...the one thing that's gotten me is
forgetting to flip over the little wire handle on the heat sink into
it's recess. The keyboard will snap in but will feel mushy and bow up
in the middle if you don't do that.

The memory resides on a removable daughtercard, you will need to lift it out
(pull straight up carefully). Flip the card over and the bottom memory is
there.

I installed 10.2 on my iBook, and later just copied over a 9.2 System
Folder from my iMac so I could do something in Classic. I can also use
that as a startup option. One thing you have to remember to do when
installing OSX first is to check the box to install OS9 drivers on the

Re: Compare Apple to Orange (err.. I mean Pentium)

2004-03-24 Thread Tom Burke
On Wednesday, March 24, 2004, at 03:54 pm, G-Books wrote:

Subject: Re: Compare Apple to Orange (err.. I mean Pentium)

A long time ago, a P3 had to be almost double the clock speed of a G3
to be equal (in some things). When the P4s came out, they had to be
double the speed of a P3 to compete with the P3! Part of that was
because the P4s had a longer pipeline to get a higher clock speed,
and part was because right after it was released the compilers had
not been optimized for the P4. The G4 is faster than the G3 for
some things--and with those things its a LOT faster.
So a 1.2Ghz G3 should be 4 times faster than the 600Mhz P3, and for a
few things, the G4 will be maybe 10 times faster on some things.
But this all depends on cache size, and location and a bunch of other
things---like your disk drive. The different G4 laptops have
different speeds unrelated to the chip speeds.
If you have a 600MhzG3 it's probably really old, and so everything on
the new machine will be a lot better in every way.
You have to hand it to Intel (and AMD, for that matter) - they've
overcome all the (theoretical) limitations and handicaps of their
original CISC design by a) significant redesign yet somehow maintaining
compatibility, and above all b) pushing the cpu speed up to
extraordinary levels.

Hopefully IBM will be able to emulate this aspect of Intel's
performance with regard to the PPC 970 cpu and its siblings.

You probably mean a "256MB" chip? From what you're saying, the chip has gone
bad. I would try to have it exchanged again...

Re: Memory problem

2004-03-24 Thread Hector I Macedo
Hi Laurent, yes, I have in that slot a 64 m chip which works ok, it
happens as soon as I install the 232 m memory chip.

I have swapped them at leas 3 times and its always the same result.

I should mention that I had before another 232 chip which did not want
to work on 10.2 so I called OWC and they sent me this one as a
warranty, but its doing that now.

You don't need to remove the bottom case. You have to pull the keyboard,
then remove the magnetic shield and you'll have direct access to the
processor daughtercard. If you want to replace the top slot memory, you
don't even have to pull the daughtercard.

Rad:

What memory are you trying to get at? The system memory is under the
keyboard which you access the release inside each of the battery/cd
compartments (spring loaded slides, one each side). These pop up the
keyboard and you carefully lift it out of the way (there still is a ribbon
attached). The memory is under a steel plate held down by one screw, it is
in the center, you can't miss it. Once the plate is removed, you will see
the memory card, one stick is accessed from top, if you want to put a second
one, you remove the card and it is underneath. The bottom slot requires low
profile ram to fit.

No, when the P4 fist came out, various benchmarks showed that the P4
was slower than the P3 when compared at identical clock speeds.
Significantly slower. They've ramped up the clock speeds to compensate
for this.

That's funny, I did a clean install of OSX on my iBook and forgot to install OS9
first. I booted from my OS9 CD, installed it, then booted back into OSX, and the next
time I ran a Classic app, it said it was adding something to the classic startup
config (or something like that, I didn't write the message down), and it's been
working fine ever since. Since they're so different, you're not really installing OS9
over OSX, more like you're installing it next to OSX.

As always, your results may vary,
Kurt

Michael,

You must have 9.2 installed first. You cant install an older OS over a
newer one. I bought my Tbook from someone who only had Panther
installed and i had to wipe out the hd to install 9.2.2. It also
