If you're throwing other users in the mix, then it will add another level of complexity, plus the added problem of permissions. Even if you are the administrator, you don't have access to some folders of the other users. It's hard to synchronize the content of a folder when you don't have access to it. Sure, you could enable the root user, but if you synchronize folders to which you usually don't have access to, you need to be careful not to end up with a lot of scattered files that are owned by root and are not accessible by regular users. You might have another nightmare to restore the original permissions on the copies. Laurent - This is very interesting. I have a desktop G3 and a G3 Dual-USB iBook. If the copy on the other computer has not changed, then you can just copy the file over, through file sharing or other connection means. When you have a few files, it's relatively easy to manage. When you have more files, or when you start modifying some files on the other computer, that's when it's getting tricky. So, since I am using mostly a laptop but I also have a desktop, I came upon that kind of complexity at some point shortly after OS X came out. I had some files on my laptop like my Office identity that was residing on my laptop and I wanted to share it with my desktop, so that I could use my more powerful desktop Mac to read my emails. Same for my bookmarks. I then checked what was available for synchronization. The offerings were whether too expensive or cumbersome to use. So, shameless plug I ended up writing my own synchronization app. You can learn more from http://nemesys.dyndns.org/FileSynchronization_EN.html. /shameless plug! -Laurent. -- Laurent Daudelin Developer, Multifamily, ESO, Fannie Mae mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]Washington, DC, USA Usual disclaimers apply *** -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... 60GB 7200RPM or 80GB 5400RPM
What would you buy? I'm really stuck here. I can't decide which drive to buy for my Pismo, and I need one very soon. I'm stuck between the Hitachi/IBM Travelstar 60GB 7200rpm vs the 80GB 5400rpm. Since I've seen very similar prices on them, is the performance increase from a 5400rpm drive to a 7200rpm drive worth the smaller size? I'll be doing some video editing, some music editing, and a lot of general everyday multi-tasking in various apps. Pismo 400mhz, 1GB RAM. Unless the performance boost is feelable, I'm liking the size of the 80GB. Thanks in advance for your advice. -Sam -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... 12 Mainstreet external video problem solved
Hi. I don't know if anyone else has had a problem with an external monitor. I've had one and have solved it. The Problem: If I have an external monitor attached when I power up my PB (Jaguar-only install), I'd end up with a blank screen on both the LCD and the external monitor. If I'd boot up without the monitor attached, I couldn't re-direct the display (Detect Displays didn't do anything) The First Workaround: Start with monitor attached. Unplug external monitor when the swirly thing shows up on the gray boot screen. Plug the monitor back in when the disk sounds stop. The Better Solution: I found a bit of code from University of Utah Student Computing Labs which changed the screen resolution from the command line. I modified it to use a resolution that both the LCD and the external monitor could live with, wrapped it up as a startup process, and dropped it in the appropriate system library. Result -- PB starts fine with external monitor attached, or not. Easy switch of resolution when external monitor attached via the menu bar thingee. If anyone wants details, contact me offline. Re: File synch in OSX?
Versiontracker throws up a few different options with mixed feedback. Any suggestions on good tools? Well, IMNSHO, I think that File Synchronization is the best, most affordable and easiest to use tool but then, I'm the author! I'm not the author and I agree. There are lots of other tools that offer lots of other features. However, it is not at all clear that they improve on synchronization and few of them are as intuitive as File Synchronization and most of them cost a lot more. My only complaint is that the icon in the dock looks a bit fuzzy :) Check it out. troubleshooting dead Pismo
I just purchased a dead Pismo, which according to the seller had been dropped. I'm trying to revive it. The case has a small crack but otherwise it appears to be in very good physical condition. It won't power on, and there are no lights on the battery etc--no sign of power whatsoever. I found a service manual pdf online, and have taken the powerbook apart, as far as taking off the sound board. I made sure everything is firmly seated and visually inspected all parts--I can't see any broken parts. Any suggestions for troubleshooting this? Are there any parts that are most likely to be the culprits, or that would be good to start with as far as replacements (battery, sound card)? Also, any recommendations on good repair places? Wireless Wallstreet
The recent thread about base stations whetted my appetite for wireless. I've also been longing to break the built-in 10 Meg, half-duplex LAN limitation I've got so now sounds like a good time to buy once I get my facts straight. Today I went to CompUSA to check out the Buffalo that was mentioned and want to verify a fact I was sold (I mean told). Assuming I get an 802.11g base station (Apple or otherwise), can I use one of the faster, up to 54 Mbps (ignoring the 108 Mbps flavor out there for the time being) non-Apple 802.11g PC cards with my 233 MHz Wallstreet II and if so, can I expect to see greater than 10 Mbps throughput (e.g., LAN file xfer) or do I have to live with the slower Apple-only internal card as the CompUSA sales rep indicated and just live with the 10 Meg 1/2 duplex limitation enjoying the wireless freedom but not a theoretical 5 fold one way speed increase? I'd hate to buy an 802.11g PC card and find it doesn't work or get one the works but have 1 Mbit throughput! Thanks. Steve Kerney -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Strange behavior of Wall Street internal CD-ROM drive
I wanted to reboot from my Disk Warrior CD-ROM so I put it in the internal CD-ROM drive and rebooted, holding down the C key, but the computer started up from the HD, eventually reporting that it couldn't recognize the CD-ROM and offered to eject or initialize it, so I chose the former. The CD-ROM had opened on the Desktop when I had inserted it before rebooting and also was recognized when I re-inserted it after it had been ejected. This happened all over again when I repeated the procedure, but restarting with the C key down only immediately after inserting the CD-ROM. Finally, I decided to choose the CD-ROM from the Startup Disk control panel and that worked when I restarted. Perhaps related is that the Wall Street started up yesterday with a bootable Jaz disk in the drive. I thought you had to press a specific key combination (Option+Command+Shift+Delete) to get a Mac to boot from an external drive, overriding the internal HD.
