--
Sorry, I don't buy the "hinge" explanation. If that was the case, why
is that people can hook an external monitor up when they first start
having problems, and have the same symptoms appear there? Since I
happen to have one of the listed (700 mhz Icebook) machines, I have
done extensive research on this on the Apple discussion boards, and the
real issue seems to be with the video chip. This chip is located
underneath the lower left "hand rest" area, right where it gets all the
heat from the hard drive. If you've ever noticed, that area can get
extremely hot! And as we all know, electronic components don't like
heat. This excess heat is also the explanation for another common
problem with iBooks: hard drive failures. I believe the cooling system
in these could have been designed better. Most of the folks that have
had video failures, have also noticed that they never hear the cooling
fan coming on. And yes, considering how many iBooks that Apple has
sold, it's safe to say that the majority have not had problems. I
bought mine second-hand (out of warranty), and other than the drive
dying a week after I got it, I have no complaints. Like they say, it's
the squeaky wheel that gets the attention. However, if I had to do it
again, I would have bought one with a warranty, just for the peace of
mind. But I would STILL get an iBook!

All 12" iceBooks. Apple says it's affectong only a limited range of serial

They're different parts for sure. I remember comparing the case bottoms
of a 400 and a 550 and they're very similar but definitely different.
Might be able to cobble it together but they won't work without some
fettling (drilling, cutting, bending, etc.) If you mean the entire lower
case, forget it, they are waaay too different for a swap.

In general very few parts are shared between TiBook generations. However,
this is as good a spot as any to mention I just stuck a complete 550
display (1152x768) on a 667 DVI and it works fine, even though the
original screens are different (DVI has 1280x1024 ?) Oh, err, the sleep

You have to carefully pry out the processor daughterboard. You have to be
very careful not to bend any of the numerous pins that connect the
daughterboard to the motherboard. However, it is easily done when you are
careful and know how it connects. I've done it multiple time without any
problem. The lower memory slot is underneath that daughterboard. I think the
trickiest part is making sure that the daughterboard is firmly put back in
place. You have to apply a firm push to the daughterboard which some people
are afraid to apply. If the daughterboard is aligned properly, there
shouldn't be any problem pushing it firmly into place. You just don't want
to put too much pressure to break the daughterboard, though!

However since 128MB is the "official minimum" I'd say the next possibility

If the machine worked ok with os9 then there might be an odd ram hardware

The other thing of course is to make sure the chips haven't popped out of

Wish I could recommend a good ram testing/diagnostic software other than

Re: Wallstreet proessor upgrades

2004-04-16 Thread Wayne
I used a Powerlogix 466 upgrade card for a few years, and it worked great. I
followed the instructions, flashed the Rom, shutdown the computer, removed
original processor, put in Powerlogix, start up and the Rom was flashed,
that was it.

Went from 233 to the 466 speeds with a 1 MB backside cache and saw an
immediate jump in speeds.

The only problem I incurred was the maximum ram that could be run was 256
MB, still do not know what the reason was for this as some people reported
using 512 Mb or more.

It was speculated that the Apple Rom may have had something to do with this
(different versions of Rom in different computers), although this was never
confirmed.

I used OSX and full suite of graphics programs with the card and never had
any problems.

I also like to state that Powerlogix was an excellent company to work with,
helpful and knowledgeable.

Wallstreet proessor upgrades

2004-04-16 Thread COCCORP
Hi,

What are do's & don'ts, the "must-have"'s and "do not touch"'s regarding
Powerlogix, Sonnet and else (Newer?) processor upgrades for the Wallstreet I and
WS II?

I just recently obtained a Powerlogix and a Sonnet upgrade card, but I have
heard tales of ROM upgrades, heat problems, etc. I have also researched the
'net, and gathered info from comparisons & the like...

But now I am asking for real testimonies from actual users... thanks!

I think the 8GB limitation was for the Wallstreet.

Wallstreet and iBook rotten to the core

Wallstreet hinges are weak and break all the time. They got loose and
sloppy with little wear. Best is to replace defectives with steel
aftermarket hinges.

Dim screen...bad. Backlight going ffft.

Re: Lombard & OSX

2004-04-16 Thread mmnihals
I got the same model Lombard running 10.3.3 quite nicely. I've been OSX
only since Jaguar. In my experience, 192MB isn't enough for OSX to run
smoothly. I had 192 MB myself before OSX. (a 128MB+64MB). Upgraded and put
in a 256MB chip in the bottom slot and the 128 in the top slot. At 384mb
the machine runs fine. My system profiler can't ID the ram chip type but
its been running since 10.2 first came out.

However since 128MB is the "official minimum" I'd say the next possibility
could be a problem with the ram chips. You could try with just 128MB to
see if the thing at least boots ok (assuming you have a 64mb+128mb
config).

If the machine worked ok with os9 then there might be an odd ram hardware
compatibility issue.

The other thing of course is to make sure the chips haven't popped out of
the slots (known to happen and is worth a look).

Wish I could recommend a good ram testing/diagnostic software other than
techtool that comes with Applecare CDROM.
