Re: Wallstreet proessor upgrades
[EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED] said: What are do's don'ts, the must-have's and do not touch's regarding Powerlogix, Sonnet and else (Newer?) processor upgrades for the Wallstreet I and WS II? Well, regarding the Powerlogix 500Mhz G3 upgrades, they can only run in the same base model as they have been flashed for. It seems it's the video card that is the determinating factor, not board speed, but this have not been 100% verified yet. You can tell that your card have been flashed for another model, if it postinstallation boots up but there is no video. So a CPU card that have been flashed on a WS II/PDQ (233wcache/266/300) will not work in a WS I (233nocache/250/292) an vice versa. The 233s may be interchangeable if it's the board speed that determinates, but I don't think it is. AFAIK there is no way to reflash the card for the other type of model. -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: whats best/???
John, [EMAIL PROTECTED] said: And I don't understand why you would say that an 800 iBook feels slow. Well, it feels slow considering it has a 800Mhz G4, when the Pismo have a 500Mhz G3. the difference in Cache memory, 768K, is of course one important part of the equation. I'd earlier say that the video advantage of the iBook would have been the determinating factor, but as my 266Mhz WS have a snappy interface with an equally unsupported (for hardware acceleration) videocard, I do certainly doubt a Pismo would feel slower than that. As for Lombard, it's not a Pismo of course, but the GUI feeling from WS and the Pismo gives me reason that a Lombard could compete with a 500Mhz iBook. My 700 Icebook is very snappy with 640 mb RAM running Panther. I have no complaints at all! Good for you. -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: Lombard OSX
Thanks, for all the suggestions. I think its related to the memory. Will move the 128k stick (actually a 256 but its a dual sided so only sees 128) from the top to the bottom and see what happens. Right now when both stick are in OSX goes only as far as the installation screen, and when I take out the 128 - it doesn't work at all. So it must be the memory. Might have to purchase more. They also require very strong magnets forming the static field that the coil moves through, far stronger than the ones in motors. I have a number of those magnets from both desktop and laptop drives. The desktop magnets are enormously strong: strong enough that when they're attached to the side of a metal desk you need to slide them off instead of pulling them off. If you need to magnet a half-ream of paper to your refrigerator these are the ones to get! The magnets in laptops are correspondingly smaller and less 'attractive' still they require some effort to remove from a metal desk drawer. Moreover, we have a number of hard drives operating within about ten feet of a 300 MhZ NMR spectrophotopmeter, fields strong enough that we have to leave our wallets in a box in another room, or our credit cards get erased. HDD's haven't had head positioning motors in a very long time. Instead they use a coil actuating system which is much faster in response. I know about voice coil positioners, I was using motor in the basic sense which it is. The computers hum along just fine. Strong enough to suck keys right out of your hand. I worked at Varian PAID on their NMR spectrometers.Superconducting DC permanent magnets. We also had some huge honk'in old fashioned DC magnets and huge honk'in permanent magnets. These could stick your refrigerator to a wall if you wanted. -- Clark Martin Redwood City, CA, USA Macintosh / Internet Consulting I'm a designated driver on the Information Super Highway -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... VLC is a nice alternative. However, it doesn't support the latest Windoze Media 9 codecs. I've already run into plenty of .wmv files that don't play in VLC and only plays in WMP. My suggestion is to install both, make one your default, and make the other be a backup player. -- Eugene Lee eugene at anime dot net -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and...
