What are do's don'ts, the must-have's and do not touch's regarding
Powerlogix, Sonnet and else (Newer?) processor upgrades for the
Wallstreet I and WS II?

Well, regarding the Powerlogix 500Mhz G3 upgrades, they can only run in
the same base model as they have been flashed for. It seems it's the
video card that is the determinating factor, not board speed, but this
have not been 100% verified yet. You can tell that your card have been
flashed for another model, if it postinstallation boots up but there is
no video.

So a CPU card that have been flashed on a WS II/PDQ (233wcache/266/300)
will not work in a WS I (233nocache/250/292) an vice versa. The 233s may
be interchangeable if it's the board speed that determinates, but I don't
think it is. AFAIK there is no way to reflash the card for the other type
of model.

Re: whats best/???

2004-04-19 Thread Mikael Byström
John, [EMAIL PROTECTED] said:

And I don't understand why you would say that an 800 iBook
feels slow.
Well, it feels slow considering it has a 800Mhz G4, when the Pismo have a
500Mhz G3. the difference in Cache memory, 768K, is of course one
important part of the equation. I'd earlier say that the video advantage
of the iBook would have been the determinating factor, but as my 266Mhz
WS have a snappy interface with an equally unsupported (for hardware
acceleration) videocard, I do certainly doubt a Pismo would feel slower
than that.

As for Lombard, it's not a Pismo of course, but the GUI feeling from WS
and the Pismo gives me reason that a Lombard could compete with a 500Mhz
iBook.

My 700 Icebook is very snappy with 640 mb RAM running
Panther. I have no complaints at all!
Good for you.

Re: Lombard OSX

2004-04-19 Thread Polkadoter
Thanks, for all the suggestions. I think its related to the memory. Will
move the 128k stick (actually a 256 but its a dual sided so only sees 128)
from the top to the bottom and see what happens. Right now when both stick are
in OSX goes only as far as the installation screen, and when I take out the
128 - it doesn't work at all. So it must be the memory. Might have to
purchase more.

Parallel printer

2004-04-19 Thread Michel Treisman
I would like to use my Laserwriter 4/600 PS directly with my TiBook.
Maplin has a USB to Parallel Printer Cable.

They say it is a Centronics parallel connector. Is that what I need or
would the LaserWriter need a
standard parallel connector?
TIA,

None sure that would work. According to this Apple spec document
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=112505, the 4/600PS is
listed as having only one LocalTalk port. That means you would need
something like a LocalTalk to Ethernet bridge, like the AsanteTalk...

In the Pentium world, a 750mhz is not 50% faster than a 500mhz. Is that
true for G4 as well?
I think they used to use 5% increase per 100Mhz as a general rule. I'm

This is a sometime problem I run into on my Wallstreet. It's
something goofy with the power manager I guess. You should be able
to get the back lighting on by hitting the brightness control on the

to sleep the backlighting won't come back on. To fix it restart into

hopefully, all is well.

 065-4861 512MB DDR333 SDRAM - 1 SO-DIMM

 065-4819 Backlit Keyboard/Mac OS - U.S. English
(I also got a HP 5150 printer, free after mail in rebate)

You may or may not go YAY to your HP 5150 printer. I have one
hitched to an eMac running Panther and your clothing could go out of
style in the time it takes to print. It also doesn't start
automatically and I get fairly frequent pen failure messages.
For some reason, it occasionally prints emails that are upside down
and backwards, so that I have to hold the paper up to the window and
read through the back of the sheet. I've never seen that trick on any
other printer.

HDD's haven't had head positioning motors in a very long time. Instead
they use a coil actuating system which is much faster in response.

They also require very strong magnets forming the static field that the
coil moves through, far stronger than the ones in motors.

I have a number of those magnets from both desktop and laptop drives.
The desktop magnets are enormously strong: strong enough that when
they're attached to the side of a metal desk you need to slide them off
instead of pulling them off.

If you need to magnet a half-ream of paper to your refrigerator these
are the ones to get!

The magnets in laptops are correspondingly smaller and less
'attractive' still they require some effort to remove from a metal desk
drawer.

Moreover, we have a number of hard drives operating within about ten
feet of a 300 MhZ NMR spectrophotopmeter, fields strong enough that we
have to leave our wallets in a box in another room, or our credit cards
get erased. The computers hum along just fine.

I have some family movies that were made on a PC in WMV and I was wondering
if there is some way I can play them on my Mac?

 Tom

Just download Windows Media Player for the Mac

Mplayer http://mplayerosx.sourceforge.net/. Current version is beta6,
but I recommend beta4, as it lacks some of the sync problems with beta5.
VLC http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-macosx.html may be good on a
G4, but takes too much resources on a G3 in my experience. Current
version is 0.7 I think. Avoid version 0.6.
Also, there is the OS X version of Windows Media Player, but guess what
app have given me the best results? Mplayer, especially on streamed WMV.

Wow!

I'm new to the G-Books list. I am absolutely honored to receive an
email from *the* Timothy J. Luoma, if even indirectly.

I have only a '98 Wallstreet, but I *do* still use a screamin' 400 MHz
OpenStep (Intel) machine, and an '040 Cube to boot.

Thanks again for all your contributions to the NeXT world.

Cordially,

HA! I thought this was a setup.

OpenStep (Intel) machine, and an '040 Cube to boot.

Thanks again for all your contributions to the NeXT world.
You're welcome. Believe it or not it was about a decade ago that I
started working for PEAK on the next-ftp site. I remember thinking that
the WWW was a waste of time (well, it still is, but in a different way ;-)

(For the non-NeXTers: PEAK was one of the two main FTP sites. Just about
every NeXTSTEP/OpenStep program was available on one or both of PEAK or
Peanuts, which was in Germany, IIRC. This was long before anyone had
their own web page to sell software. If you are familiar with Tucows or
Download.com it was something like that except a lot less sophisticated.
I essentially ran the PEAK site, answered questions, etc. This was back
when Usenet was actually worth using and before there was much spam... ah
the golden days. Believe it or not I still get a few emails/month about
NeXT stuff. You can still find a bunch of it at www.peak.org/~luomat/
[which you are only allowed to visit if you agree not to mock the web
design. It was the late 1990s.)

NeXTStep/OpenStep was absolutely awesome and I missed it terribly when I
finally had to quit using it (I sold my NeXTStation in 2001 and my NSFIP
machine went to the trash heap because I couldn't find anyone to buy it
:-/ I was truly hoping for OS-X for Intel but I'm looking forward to
getting back into the Unix world (tried FreeBSD but it had the same
problem as Windows; it was too hard to get it to do what I wanted it to
do. Even getting a window manager to work was a colossal pain.)

...

I just realized that I bought a new computer in 1997 (133mhz Pentium with
64mb ram [I think] which became the main machine instead of my 25mhz
NeXTStation w/ 32ram) then 2000 (650mhz Pentium with 128mb ram) and now
2004 (1ghz G4 with 512mb ram). I wonder what I'll be looking at in
2007/2008 :-?

Anyway, thanks for the ego boost. I think this is the first time I've
been referred to as *the* Timothy J. Luoma :-DDD As if my wife
didn't already have too much to put up with (-:

HDD's haven't had head positioning motors in a very long time.

response.

I know about voice coil positioners, I was using motor in the basic
sense which it is.

They also require very strong magnets forming the static field that
the coil moves through, far stronger than the ones in motors.

I have a number of those magnets from both desktop and laptop
drives. The desktop magnets are enormously strong: strong enough
that when they're attached to the side of a metal desk you need to
slide them off instead of pulling them off.

If you need to magnet a half-ream of paper to your refrigerator
these are the ones to get!

The magnets in laptops are correspondingly smaller and less
'attractive' still they require some effort to remove from a metal
desk drawer.

Moreover, we have a number of hard drives operating within about ten
feet of a 300 MhZ NMR spectrophotopmeter, fields strong enough that
we have to leave our wallets in a box in another room, or our credit
cards get erased. The computers hum along just fine.

Strong enough to suck keys right out of your hand. I worked at
Varian PAID on their NMR spectrometers.Superconducting DC
permanent magnets. We also had some huge honk'in old fashioned DC
magnets and huge honk'in permanent magnets. These could stick your
refrigerator to a wall if you wanted.

VLC is a nice alternative. However, it doesn't support the latest
Windoze Media 9 codecs. I've already run into plenty of .wmv files
that don't play in VLC and only plays in WMP. My suggestion is to
install both, make one your default, and make the other be a backup
player.
