Re: Minidisk to Mac
With regard to a cheap pc for misc. non-mac stuff... What would be the minimum system requirements and software to look for, so one wouldn't be buying something too outdated to be useful? What would be the decent inexpensive used pc laptops to watch for? Or desktops for that matter? I have a good monitor and keyboard collecting dust in the spare room that might as well have some meaning in their lives. My humble $0.02 on the matter: I've been given a PC by the company I do consulting work with and its just a P2 533 Mhz machine with Winderz 2000 on it. I had an old 40G HD which I added to the machine qintupling its storage ;) Slow but usable. That'll be the biggest problem if you get an older machine. It'll come with a tiny by today's standards HD. You'd want a bit more muscle to run Windows XP (home edition is good enough for what you'd want, no need for the corporate/business version) and stay away from ME, stick with 98 service pack 2 if you want an older 'stable' version of Windows (you can think of Windows 2000 as an updated version of NT, the 'corporate' version of Windows). It'd be a lot easier to add a HD to a desktop machine versus a laptop. On the other hand, if you really aren't going to be adding very much software, you could easily make due with a factory 10G HD. As far as brand goes, well, you're getting a used PC so it doesn't matter too much. I wouldn't buy a corner shop down the street built type, I'd buy a 'name' brand. Just wipe the disc and reinstall whatever version of windows comes with the machine then spend the time to go to the windows update website and just keep applying patches til it says you're up to date. Starting with a fresh slate is very important when you're dealing with a used PC. Remember, you aren't trying to buy a gaming machine, so you'll get a bare bones machine without a fancy 3d video card and fancy sound. But those aren't important for just running things like the Sony MD software and the like. Brian -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Why can't you use the headphone jack on the Minidisk and run the sound into your Mac through a program like Coaster, which will convert it back to digital, which can then be saved to CD? This should work. http://www.minidisc-canada.com/shopexd.asp?id=130 http://www.xitel.com/ This is from Xitel's site: My HiFi-Link doesn't seem to work under OSX, but works fine under OS9: Problem: After installing the HiFi-Link it doesn't seem to work under OSX. Fix: Sorry guys, the manual was written before OSX was released. The HiFi-Link works under OSX using the generic USB audio drivers. All you need to do is plug it directly into a USB port on your system and it will automatically load the drivers. You'll then need to select it as the preferred output device, since OSX doesn't change to a new device now with the system preferences control panel. To do this go to: SYSTEM PREFERENCES - HARDWARE SECTION: SOUND ICON - OUTPUT - select USB audio. This should now set your system so that audio flows out the HiFi-Link. _ Larry Zasitko 306-522-3453 Tel 190 Sangster Blvd., Regina, SK., Canada 306-791-0432 Fax S4R 7G9 [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... I had two Pismos, that also wouldn't start. They had been left on a shelf for a year collecting dust. I did all the same things you did. Nothing worked. So I plugged them in, and left them alone for two weeks. After two weeks, the battery lights came on, and starting charging. After that, they started up without incident. Might be worth trying. Advice on upgrading: iBook to Powerbook
Ok, I know this question has been beaten often been asked and has been discussed to death, but my interest is very specific, so hopefully someone can give me some specific insight. I've been an member of the list for quite a while and have really valued the thoughts of the members and tried to contribute when I could. Unfortunately, I recently moved and there's no local Apple Store to go play with the new hardware, so I have to rely on your help here... I currently use, as my daily machine for work/play, the last G3 iBook (12, 900mHz, 640MB ram, combo drive). I really like it a lot. It's got 2.5 years of AppleCare left on it and it works great. I'm in the process of changing jobs and am considering purchasing a new Powerbook (got a lump sum payment and am eyeing a new computer). I'm wondering if anyone has made the switch from a G3/800 or 900mHz or so iBook to a 1.25, 1.33 or 1.5gHz Powerbook and could share their experience. I briefly used a 1gHz 12 Powerbook and found the speed increase from this iBook to be very minimal if any in most applications. I found the benefits to be so marginal, I sold the Powerbook and stuck with the iBook. I also had a TiBook (800mHz) for quite a while and really liked it, but it wasn't much faster than the iBook and the iBook is far more durable than the Ti. I use the computer for email, web browsing, Office apps, etc. I don't play games too much on it, as I have a 1.2gHz upgraded Cube with a 17 flat panel at home, and it works great. I do occasionally use Virtual PC and it's a little slow on the iBook, but certainly useable. I'm wondering if anyone has specific experience with VPC on a newer Powerbook as well. I'm leaning towards the 15 Powerbook partly because the backlit keyboard is so cool, but also partly because I prefer ATI graphics chips. From what I've read, the 9700 is a great chip whereas the GeForce5200 in the 12 Powerbook is adequate, but nothing to write home about. As I said, I'm doing the homework on this, but would really appreciate any advice. Also, if anyone has thoughts on ordering the 128MB graphics card or the 5400rpm hard drive options, I'd love to hear those as well. I'm considering the 15/1.5 gHz/128MB VRAM/Superdrive/512MB single chip/80GB 5400rpm configuration. Thanks in advance. -Hal -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... I don't suppose you live near Ohio ;-? Anyway, the reasons that I went with the PB over the iBook are the extra USB ports, FW ports, larger HD, better video card, PC-card slot (the only way you can upgrade a laptop for some next great thing that comes along afterwards. It's how I got Firewire and wifi on my last laptop that was 4 years old). There was a good website that was posted about a month or so ago that went into the details of what an iBook lacked that a PB had... That was mostly the same conclusions I had come to. I can't find the URL, perhaps someone else has it? I don't know if that helps, but I always think it is wise to get as much computer as you can afford at the time and make it last as long as you can. That basic thought was the real decision maker when it came to the PB. The extra money went towards making me feel like I had the best computer for the longest amount of time (not that in 6-12 months there won't be newer/cheaper/faster, but that I'll have had this one and be happy with it, rather than feeling like I settled.) Re: Airport in iBook--OPTION-S restart?!
Will never see the setup assistant, unless he or she launches it him or herself. Has nothing to do with the card being recognized. Sounds like a bad card, OR an improperly seated card. How can I tell if the card is improperly seated? I plugged it in the wire and have it under the keyboard and under the hold down wire. I did try the Option S, but that made no difference. Re: Minidisk to Mac
I do that with SoundStudio, which seems to be working fine with X, by the way. I run my MiniDisc into the PB, record and convert with Soundstudio, and burn onto CD. I'm just thinking there might be a faster (Digital) way to transfer the analog minidisc onto my Mac, without having to record it in real-time, which takes forever... My PC question was more about having a backup computer that could do things the Mac can't - like GoDaddy's online webpage builder, AOL radio, etc. Kristin Why can't you use the headphone jack on the Minidisk and run the sound into your Mac through a program like Coaster, which will convert it back to digital, which can then be saved to CD? Tom With regard to a cheap pc for misc. non-mac stuff... Kristin -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and...
