My proof reading sucks. The following should say:

>you please.
>1) Can I/should go 802.11 G or B with a Pismo and Panther?

You can go with 802.11g if you want. But it doesn't sound like it
would be all that valuable to you at this point in time.

Sorry for the omission,

Bob

My printer sharing question must have been the same. I never did get
a response on it.

>it's a good time to go wireless. Just a couple of quick questions, if

>1) Can I/should go 802.11 G or B with a Pismo and Panther?

You can if you want. But it doesn't sound like it would be all that
valuable to you at this point in time.

>2) What inexpensive router do you recommend?

Do you get dizzy easily? You just jumped on one huge merry-go-round.
:-) You'll hear all kinds of recommendations, including brands that
some people like and other people hate.

It's like anything else -- what do you (& possibly *will* you) want
to do with your WiFi network? Do you need to use AppleTalk over it?
Do you need a modem in the WAP (wireless access point or base
station) for primary or fall back (emergency) use? Are you going to
have anything hard wired via an Ethernet cable to the network? Is
cost a factor in your decision? Do you want to share a USB printer?
Etc, etc.

>3) Would you get a PCMCIA card for the Pismo or an airport card? I don't
>currently use the PCMCIA slot for anything.

There are pluses and minuses to both choices. I'm sure other list
members will contribute their feelings about it. If you are diligent
in your shopping, I don't think you will find that much difference
between an Apple Airport card and a major brand PCMCIA card. Most of
the people I have heard from say that the PCMCIA card usually has
better range than a built-in Airport card. But the PCMCIA card will
stick out of your PC slot an inch or inch and a half, which makes it
somewhat vulnerable to damage. However, it also means that you can
put the card in various PBs if, and when, you so desire.

>4) If I understand correctly I can't use airport extreme, just the
>original airport card in the Pismo, correct?

I don't know if there are any differences in physical configuration
or not. I tend to say there isn't, but I don't know for sure. I *do*
know that you can use a IEEE802.11g PCMCIA card.

>Does that mean an 802.11 brouter? Thanks for your time.

The 11g technology is backward compatible, so both a 11b card with a
11g WAP, and a 11g card with a 11b WAP will work, though both at the
slower speed.

>All I want to do is light surfing and email - not heavy file transfers.

Like I mentioned above, that doesn't seem to require higher speed or
higher cost. However...you wouldn't be the first to expand your
horizons far beyond your current expectations, as you really "get
into it." So, if money is not a major factor, you may want to get the
best that you can. That way, if your horizons *do* expand, you won't
be limited by equipment that is feature limited.

One last comment. I'm going to let others recommend specific brands
and models, but my own personal feeling is that if you can come
within $30-$40 when comparing an Apple Base Station and a 3rd party
model, I would go for the ABS. If it's more like $100 - $200, then
you need to choose the the one that fits your needs and pocketbook
the best. One quick example of why I prefer Apple/same-as-Apple
products whenever feasible...

When a user takes his or her PB out and "roams" looking for
open/useable WiFi networks, that's called "war driving" or "drive-by
rooting." The program(s) the seem to be the most popular in revealing
these open networks -- or Hot Spots -- is MacStumbler for OS X
 and ClassicStumbler for OS 8.6/9
. However, MacStumbler
doesn't currently support any kind of PCMCIA or 3rd-party cards, and
ClassicStumbler only works with an internal Apple AirPort card or a
Lucent/Orinoco/Avaya/Agere/Proxim WaveLAN PC card.

That's just one small example. There are many others.

Well, I see I have gone on too long. I hope some of this info is
helpful to you.

Good Luck,

Bob

another wireless question

I'm sorry if this has been discussed ad infitinum, but I have a wireless
question...
My wired router just died, and since I've got to replace it, I figure
it's a good time to go wireless. Just a couple of quick questions, if
you please.
1) Can I/should go 802.11 G or B with a Pismo and Panther?
2) What inexpensive router do you recommend?
3) Would you get a PCMCIA card for the Pismo or an airport card? I don't
currently use the PCMCIA slot for anything.
4) If I understand correctly I can't use airport extreme, just the
original airport card in the Pismo, correct? Does that mean an 802.11 b

All I want to do is light surfing and email - not heavy file transfers.

Best idea for dedicated print server?

2004-06-15 Thread Michael Dolberry
I need help with your opinion.

I need to find the least expensive way to network one
of my printers to be used on my wireless network.

I have an Epson, with USB, and a Lexmark, which is
supposed to directly network (more below).

My network consists of 3 laptops with wireless PC
cards, all using OS9. They connect to a graphite
(non-extreme) base station. The Lexmark is connected
by an ethernet hub to the airport. It can be seen by
the network, but never prints anything. Also connected
is an old Supermac, running the Epson in USB Printer
Sharing.

The Supermac barely remembers that it HAS hard drives
and is unreliable. Lately it cannot see its ethernet
card. I am giving up on it.

My hope is that someone can suggest a fairly
inexpensive solution that can allow me to make this
work.

What would be the cheapest laptop or desktop to take
the place of the C600? Can airport extreme work in
OS9? Does anyone have a suggestion as to why the
Lexmark can be seen, but not used? (Lexmark claims it
must be settings on the Airport. Imagine that?)

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

Mike

I'm not an expert on the subject, but the Orinoco user's manual
explicitly states that it will **not** work with multiple drivers
installed. You need to use one or the other.

>Are current production Airport Base Stations suitable for use on a network
>that only has Macs running OS 9.1 or earlier?

I think so, sure. However, I don't believe you will be able to get
802.11g speed without being in OS X if that's one of your goals.
Maybe that's not a goal, because neither of the cards you refer to
here are 11g compatible.

If cost is a factor, and if you don't require USB printer sharing,
you might save $200 or more by picking up a used Duel-Ethernet (Snow)
Apple Base Station. If you go that route, make sure the one you get
has a modem in it.

>Are their third party routers that have both ethernet connection, modem and
>which will pass AppleTalk packets?

I'm not sure about all three, but the first two requirements whittle
the field down to about 3 choices that I know of:
* Apple's ABS of course
* the SMC7004AWBR
* 3Com Office Connect 56K LAN Modem, Model # 3C886 (don't have a 3com
URL right off the top of my head)

>I have a friend who was advised to purchase a Orinoco Gold card (by

An excellent choice IMPO, or any variation of that card.

>I have been able to get it working but the software is confusing for her.

You don't have to use the Orinoco software. Use Apple's v.2.0.4. I
don't find it confusing...with the exception of needing to use a 3rd
party connect/disconnect utility for the ABS modem.

ABS Modem Utility:

>I advised her to try one of the Skyline cards, but she has already

No need to get a different card. But somebody sure got ripped off if
she spent $100 for the Orinoco Classic Gold card. Those are available
for $30-$60.

>I would like to install the Airport
>software and let her try it with out removing the Ornioco software.

Why worry about the Orinoco software? There only 3 or 4 extensions to
drag out of the Extensions folder (and they all start with Orinoco).
No Control Panels. One CSM and one app or alias in the Apple Menu
Items to drag out. You can either install the Apple software or drag
the appropriate files to the same folders that the Orinoco files were
located. No big deal.

>She has tried the Skyline software on my PB, and likes it's simple

>we are back to the money she has already spent.

Try the Apple software and see if that's any more difficult. I have a
hard time thinking that it would be.

BTW let repeat a suggestion that I made to you a week ago.
IPNetMonitor is an invaluable communication tool. It reads the
throughput (input and output) for Ethernet, the Airport PC card,
Broadband, and plain old POTS PPP. There's never any wondering about
what's going on with the connection. And I haven't even mentioned the
addition tools for Pinging, Trace Route, Finger, Whois, NS Lookup,
DHCP tools and more. I can't imagine being without it. (Disclaimer: I
have absolutely nothing to do with the writers or marketers of
IPNetMonitor, other than being a **very** satisfied customer.) I see
they have raised the shareware price since I paid for mine a number
of years ago. But man is it worth it IMHO.

You're a lot sharper than you give yourself credit for being. Setting
up a 1400 under 7.6 is harder than setting up a Wallstreet under OS
9. However connecting to an existing network (Hot Spot) is a lot
easier than configuring your own network and base station.

Hope This Helps,

Bob

VLC or perhaps Mplayer under OS X (not sure of if MP do DVDplaying),
but
I think you'll find that you need at least a G4 upgrade card to be able
to play DVDs without hardware decoding. Even with that you prboably
need
to set the software to drop frames.
I had a combo drive in a FW case, but could not watch DVD's on my

Mplayer and VLC. I know the drive worked, I tested it with my G4 first.

Wayne, you need a wireless ethernet bridge, a small box with an antenna that
plugs into your ethernet port. $60 used, $100 new. Linksys and D-Link make
nice ones.

My network consists of a Linksys router, with one of the four ports
going to a DLink wireless. It doesn't go to the upload, it goes into
the number 4 slot. You have to make sure to turn the wireless DHCP
function off if you have two routers so they don't conflict.

I'm not sure. I think the Airport units can do this, but I'm not sure about
others.

What about a USB wireless device for the other machine?

Thanks for the response. I still use same HD. Problem started shortly
after I went from Netscape 4.79 to 7.0. Problem only occurs when I use

Bill
You might want to check SillyDog's Netscape archive

They show 7.02 for OS 8.6 so it should be fine with OS 9.1.
Their "streamline" packages are very nice but the latest they've got for
the MAC is Netscape 6.2.2.

L2 cache memory

2004-06-15 Thread Tom and Lisa P
It looks like the L2 cache on my 3500 is dead, dead, dead. While I
have another 3500 motherboard (dead) I can scrounge from, I would
rather put down a faster cache part if possible. Is there anyone out
there with a G3 powerbook that can look at the L2 cache chips and
read of the part # ? Also, if anyone has any pics of the cache, that
would be a bonus. It shouldnt be too hard to find pin-compatable
chips out there.

thanks,

Data DVDs should work.

VLC or perhaps Mplayer under OS X (not sure of if MP do DVDplaying), but
I think you'll find that you need at least a G4 upgrade card to be able
to play DVDs without hardware decoding. Even with that you prboably need
to set the software to drop frames.

As a G4 upgrade is about the same as a DVD decoder card I'd get one.
Especially as the DVD decoder card doesn't work with OS X. I, however,
sold my WS II and bought PB G4/400 instead. For that and a G4/400 Tower
and some pocket change I got a Powerbook G4/400, some RAM, 10 GB more HD,
1152 x 768 pixels, Firewire and USB and DVDplayer. I also like the
keyboard and the weight better.

Are you sure there isn't a CD in the CD drive? A HD can be noisy, but

Re: Wall Street, wi-fi, and OS 9.1

2004-06-15 Thread Kenneth Vann
Hello All. I have some questions too.

What is the last version of Airport Software that works under OS 9.1-9.2.2?

Can the Wallstreet support more that one type of wireless software at the
same time? I am referring to perhaps the Skyline and a Airport software, or
Airport and Orinoco software. Do you just change the stetting in the
AppleTalk Control Panel and change cards?

Are current production Airport Base Stations suitable for use on a network
that only has Macs running OS 9.1 or earlier?

Are their third party routers that have both ethernet connection, modem and
which will pass AppleTalk packets?

I have a friend who was advised to purchase a Orinoco Gold card (by CDW)
for her Wallstreet. I have been able to get it working but the software is
confusing for her. I advised her to try one of the Skyline cards, but she
has already spent $100 on this card. I would like to install the Airport
software and let her try it with out removing the Ornioco software. She has
tried the Skyline software on my PB, and likes it's simple interface, but
we are back to the money she has already spent.

She has cable, uses a Belkin router, and can connect to the other computers
on the wired ethernet side of router by just going to the
Chooser/AppleShare and pick the name of the other machine. With her
Wallstreet, she does the same thing, but has to put in the IP address of
the computers on the wired side of the router to connect. No problem
connecting to internet from any of her 4 computers. I have put a alias on
the Wallstreet of each hard disk she wants to connect to, and this seems to
solve the problem, but I was wondering if I configured the Belkin router
wrong? This was the first time I ever configured one.

My previous experience is putting wireless on old PowerBook computers for
use at a Mac User Group hot spot. ( I helped a retired gentlemen set up a
PB1400/117 & OS 7.6 to surf on my Skyline card I loaned him).

Thank you.

Ken Vann

It's in the dialog sheet that appears when you click the Attach button.
It's also available via Mail -> Edit -> Attachments.

I don't think that would be a good idea. The internal cables are flimsy
little ribbons of printed plastic. VERY fragile! Besides, the keyboard
itself is a wimpy thing. Much easier just to hunt up a used iMac keyboard
and plug it into the USB port. Cheap, easy, and very rugged, at least by
comparison.

Is it possible to simply extend the "cables" ?
Are there any signal loss/interference/etc. issues ?

Re: Wireless network

2004-06-15 Thread Wayne
I wanted to see if anyone knows of PCI solution for wireless that will work
in a PM8600 running OS 9.1.

I have the iBook and Imac and my wife's Dell all wireless, but this system

I use a D-link network, not the extreme system, but the 22 speed and
standard Airport cards. D-Link has a PCI card, but it is not listed as Mac
compatible.

Thanks for any input.

OS X MAIL attachments - 2 files ???

2004-06-15 Thread Larry le Mac
Whenever I send files with Mail (OS X.3.4) the receiver gets two
copies, one which is the real file and one much smaller and
unopenable. This isn't a problem as such as the other one is
only about 10% in size, but annoying as everyone keeps
telling me that one file is corrupt or whatever and can I send
it again.
I cannot find any attachment encoding setting (I recall something
like this in Micro$oft Outlook Express in OS 9).
Any tips ?
May or may not be relevant, before I got this Mac I used OS 9 with
Outlook and I think I had a similar problem there but not sure...
