I ran across the following information on another list. I know there
are a number of users on this list that currently use, or have had in
the past used, the Sourceforge wireless driver. I like to get some
verification that this information is true or not (the specific card
was not indicated):
Under OS X, the Orinoco card works (mostly) if you use the free
wirelessdriver from Sourceforge. (My paraphrasing follows: WEP
encryption and AppleTalk do not work with this driver.)
Thanks,
Bob
I have used it on a Lombard, Pismo, and TiBook with a Lucent WaveLAN

I think not for a reasonable price. A new battery pack will qute likely

new to this list

2004-06-21 Thread Claire Hart
Hello. While I am not new to LEM lists, I'm new to this one. I
currently use an iMac DV 400.

I plan to buy a powerbook soon. I'm going to wait until after the WWDC
to see if anything new is announced, then I will order it.

I think I want to get the 15 powerbook with superdrive. It will be my
main computer. I have used laptops before, and do not like the
keyboards. Will a wireless keyboard and mouse work well with a
powerbook, or should I plan to line in? Will wireless need any
additional stuff to work, such as cards or drivers?

Thanks,

VHSDVD and TV tuner

2004-06-21 Thread caribsea
Just when I was definitely sure I knew what I needed/wanted, I realized I didn't. I
have a LombardG3 400 with a firewire2Go card and a 60GB HD. I do not have a DVD burner
for the PB or in any other form yet.
What I would like, first of all, is to transfer VHS tapes to DVD. There are DVD
recorders that can do it, as well as record TV shows. I also like the idea of
recording TV shows into the PB, then burning them to CD (CVD?.)I almost went to
BestBuy yesterday for a DVR machine with Tivo, but realized in time that it doesn't
burn to DVD disc.
There's EyeTV, MyTV, lots of DVD recorders with inputs for VCR cables. Help!

Can someone guide me before I make a mistake I can't afford?

I doubt we'll see any PowerBook announcements since the PowerBook line was
just revved. I'm expecting a new iMac and hoping against hope for another
lowcost solution besides the mammoth eMac.

Have you used the 15 keyboard? With one notable difference, I don't notice
much of a difference between the PowerBook keyboards and desktop keyboards.
That single difference is the Matias Tactile Pro Keyboard which I now use at
home and work. But yes, you can indeed use wired or wireless
keyboards/mouses with a PowerBook. Since the newer PowerBooks have bluetooth
built in there are no cards or drivers -- unless your third party
mouse/keyboard require drivers for extra functionality. For example, my four
button mouse uses driver software to control the extra buttons.

Low end PB G4's (400-550) are already dropping. I recently got a PB G4/

I personally would have felt better taking the oppurtunity to upgrade to
a G4 and bigger display. Those extra pixels in the PB G4 (plus PCMCIA) is
what kept from getting an iBook.

G5 Powerbooks will not arrive any day soon, IMHO.

before) and not more than, say, a half second after it starts. At least
that is my best guess, and even then it is hit or miss.

Try and *shut down* the machine before you boot up into OF. For some

Of course there are many uses for PC cards but does the average user really
need them today? Looking around campus (instructors, students, and
university owned) the biggest use I *now* see is adding current technologies
to older notebooks...firewire cards, for example.

The point I was making is that once upon a time having a PC card slot was
essential because notebooks lacked so many features. I well remember
spending big bucks to get a modem/network dual card so the Toshiba the
university expected me to use would actually be useful for more than keeping
a bit of my desk dust-free. But for typical usage I don't see the
overwhelming need today.

I have used it on a Lombard, Pismo, and TiBook with a Lucent WaveLAN
Gold card (same card, earlier vendor). I haven't tried AppleTalk
because my DLink wireless router doesn't support it.

There's no question whether the sourceforge driver works or not, it's
just a matter of limitations and how many there are. I was busy
slaying dragons last night and ran across the answers to my
questions. The thing that makes this driver difficult is that it's
open source and is constantly being improved. So, what might have
been true (and logged as such) 3 or 4 weeks ago, may not necessarily
be true today.

Nonetheless, this is the information they are expounding currently:

* The driver supports AppleTalk over IP but will not yet allow
printing to AppleTalk printers. We are working to fix this. To
connect to other Macs type: afp://ip-address in the connect to server
dialog (e.g. afp://10.0.1.3).

* If you have installed the latest version of the driver, both WEP
and selection of closed networks are now supported for certain
cards!! (They indicate which cards are supported)

* The thing that *really* frosts my cake is that the Apple Internet
Connect app does not recognize the sourceforge driver, thus the
Airport menu-bar icon and menu are not available when using that
driver. If I find out that Internet Connect recognizes the IOXperts
driver, that might just be enough to push me into paying for it.

The final thing that I found very disappointing was apparently no OS
X stumbler seems to support wireless PCMCIA cards. That has
nothing to do with the sourceforce driver, but it's really
aggravating. I hope somebody proves me wrong on that one.

Anyway, that's the latest scoop as I have run across it.

Later,

Bob

Re: powerbook/ibook reccomendation?

If you are traveling light, a PCMCIA compact flash card reader takes up no
space and works far faster that USB.

Tom

Of course there are many uses for PC cards but does the average user really
need them today? Looking around campus (instructors, students, and
university owned) the biggest use I *now* see is adding current technologies
to older notebooks...firewire cards, for example.

The point I was making is that once upon a time having a PC card slot was
essential because notebooks lacked so many features. I well remember
spending big bucks to get a modem/network dual card so the Toshiba the
university expected me to use would actually be useful for more than keeping
a bit of my desk dust-free. But for typical usage I don't see the
 overwhelming need today.

Transfer Bookmarks IE on G4 iBook???

2004-06-21 Thread MacAddictvja
How can I transfer my old bookmarks from Internet Explorer 5.0.6 on my
PowerMac 7300/500 to my G4 iBook (Internet Explorer 5.2)?

I tried simply copying (dragging) into the IE folder on the iBook, but the
old bookmarks did not show (unless I double click on the old bookmarks
file). But, I want the old bookmarks to actually show up in the Favorites
Toolbar when I start IE, and also in the bookmarks list just like on the
PowerMac.

Any ideas on how to do this transfer? Thanks.

Did I mention I hate top posting? Anyway, my compact flash card reader takes
up almost no space in my camera bag and I've never sat around thinking,
Jeeze, it takes too long to move 64MB of pictures from my compact flash
card to the computer. I think I need to buy an expensive PC card flash
memory reader that I can only use on my notebook computer instead of using
this small USB reader I got free with the memory card and can use on any
computer I might come across. But hey, if I ever have too much to drink and
think that, I'll be able to use it with my 15 PowerBook.

most of those PCMCIA to CF adapters can be found for less than $15.
Hardly what I'd call expensive.
