What OS are you using on the 7300? I assume you are using 10.2.x or
10.3.x on the G4.

Is File Sharing set up and turned on for the 7300?

Do you have either your H.D. or partition(s), or specific folders on
the 7300 designated to be shared?

The answer to the first question will determine what kind of advice you need.

BTW just a FWIW (For Whatever It's Worth) comment. You can pick up a
3/4-port Ethernet hub for $15 or less. That makes networking even two
computers easier. This is coming from a guy who used a crossover
cable for years to connect even to Performas. But with the price of
hubs so low these days, it's really better to go that way IMHO.

No, not if you are only needing to partition an installed drive. I
looked back at the post to which I previously responded, and it was a
4th or 5th generation response with most of the original information
deleted. So, I took it to mean that the dealer was going to install
the drive and then partition it. Your comment then, would have
referred to installing the drive yourself, if you had the
instructions, then partition it.

Obviously, that's not quite what you meant. Sorry I misinterpreted
what your comment.

Actually, partitioning is very easy. The hardest part is A.) deciding
how big to make the partitions (unless you have a huge drive); B.)
making sure you install the correct drivers for the various Operating
Systems you will be using. And FWIW give some thought to what you
want to name the various partitions before you partition the drive.
You can change the names later, but sometimes that involves hassles
with aliases and path names. Just as an idea, some us use names that
describe what will be in a particular partition -- Boot Drive
Applications, Data, Utilities, Downloads, Scrap, CD Burn etc.

I went back to re-read your previous posts in this thread (better
late than never ) and you sound like you want to install a couple
of versions of Panther as well as Jaguar on different partitions. I
don't use Panther, so I'll let someone who does, give you
instructions on how to partition your drive. But it should be a piece
of cake. (I have 8 partitions and 5 Operating Systems on my drive.)
Just keep in mind the two caveats I mentioned above.

Good Luck,

Bob

In 10.3.x, if you do open a window, then select "View" -> "Show view
options", then you have the ability to select a background, including a
picture.

Network G4 iBook with PM 7300/500 ??

I figured out how to network my PowerMac 7300/500 so it will see my G4
iBook, but the G4 iBook doesn't see the PowerMac 7300/500.

What am I setting up wrong?

Used an Ethernet cable to network the two computers.

Hello,
Has anybody tried using install CDs and multiple
CDroms?
Of course, I'm talking SCSI connections and a
shareware app called Pacifier (yanked off the 'Net? -
can't find no trace of it right now, today!).
What this does is it allows you to cherry pick the
Panther or OS X apps that you need to install.

So here's a dumb question: desktop prefs are located in System Preferences
-> ?? (which pane)?  I can't find it (!).

Strangely enough I found Apple's included manual (a real one, not PDF) to
be sufficient to deal with this sort of thing (instrall RAM, Airport card,
etc).

When Apple gave us the option to display a picture in the Finder window for

Here's what I did: I selected a picture I liked for my Finder window. Rather
than a photo, I selected a nice texture. The file was wide enough for any
window I might open but not nearly long enough - just as you describe. So I
opened the picture in Photoshop (choose your favorite graphics editing
program) and copied it. Then I pasted it below making the file twice as tall
as it had been. Unfortunately, there was a very noticeable line where the
two pieces abutted so I flipped the bottom piece 180 degrees. That made it
look tiled.

Now I have a nice Finder window picture without ever seeing a piece of white
at the bottom. Usually. As I said, maybe the engineers at Apple will think
to give us tiling in the Finder window.

It could be, of course, but my experience would indicate otherwise.

I have several email accounts. I subscribe to this list (and several

more than a year) received a SPAM to this account. Virturally all
of my SPAM comes via my OLD AOL accounts.

Lithium Battery Article

2004-06-27 Thread MacAddictvja
Thanks Andre for the link to the article on Lithium Batteries

http://www.batteryuniversity.com/parttwo-34.htm

It looks like I will continue to remove the battery in my G4 iBook when
connecting the AC, and will not allow the battery to completely discharge,
whenever possible, and completely discharge every 30 charging cycles.

I guess I'll have to change my charging habits for my cell phone as well.
I've been allowing the battery in my cell phone to completely discharge
about every other charging cycle.

Wireless PC Card Compatability List

2004-06-27 Thread Kenneth Vann
Hello All, I have a request.

Listers who have Powerbook's which were not made for Apple's built in
Airport card, how about sending me information on the wireless PC card you
use.

I want to build a list of cards that are copies or clones of the
Lucent/Agree/Orinoco/Proxim cards that will work in older Mac's. I want to
be able to identify compatability by FCC ID number, and eliminate guesswork
when trying to purchase a new or used card.

If someone knows of such a list, or already has one, please point me to it.

Please follow the format of the Diamond card I listed below. Be sure to
include the FCC ID # off the card and what software you use (OS and
software to control the card). With the FCC ID #, I can look up the card
manufacturer and fill in missing information.

FCC id look up page: http://www.fcc.gov/oet/fccid/

It's possible that cards with different names, sold in different markets,
or private branded cards, will have the same FCC ID # and thus be supported
by the Airport or Orinoco software.

Please send all PC card information to me direct. In about 30-60 days I
hope to have a list of compatible cards for use on older Macs.

PC Card Information Example:

Card Name: Diamond Card
Web site: www.ydi.com
Vendor: YDI Wireless
Vendor Address: 8000 Lee Highway, Falls Church VA 22024
Vendor Phone: 703-205-0600
Vendor Part #: 012606/B
FCC ID #NM5-A2400S
Description: 16-Bit (PCMCIA), 128 Encryption, Rom#8.52
Compatible Drivers Under OS 8.x - 9.x: Yes, Orinoco
Compatible With Airport Drivers under OS 9.x: Yes, (Tested 2.0.2 & 2.0.4)
Compatible Drivers under OSX: Not Known
Compatible With Airport Drivers Under OSX: Not Known

Thanks to all.

Ken Vann

Re: Applecare-type insurance

2004-06-27 Thread Steve Fuller
Word of warning - ensure you don't delay the purchase until near the
end
of the current one-year warranty. I was given a TiBk last year as a
gift
(!) and recently went to purchase Apple Care. Apparently there must
be at
least 90 days left on the warranty before they'll extend it. Eek. I'm
out of luck. So when I carry my Bk I walk carefully, with toes and
fingers
Must depend on who you purchase your Applecare from. According to
Apple's site, it can be purchased anytime before the warranty expires.
I purhcased mine with around 2 weeks of the original warranty left and
had no issues. The key is to make sure that it's registered with Apple
before the warranty runs out.

Re: Battery Query

2004-06-27 Thread invicta

Hello All,
I'm using my 17" PB 3/4 of the time as a desktop machine connected to
the power adaptor. I read somewhere that it would prolong battery life

The battery is not continuously charged. I have a co-worker with a new
PowerBook 17". I did notice that, even when the adaptor is connected,
his
battery charge will decrease. I asked him about it and he said that,
starting with OS X 10.3.4, the charging part of the OS will wait for
the
battery to be down to about 94% of its capacity before it will
trickle-charge it, so that it doesn't wear out the battery
prematurely. As
you may or may not know, what will wear out a Li-Ion battery is the
number
of charge cycles, or so I was told.

-Laurent.
Thank you Laurent, that is good to know and sorry for the late
reaction, I have been out of town.

Another bad influence appears to be the temperature. When the laptop is
attached to the power adaptor and folding 24 hours a day the rear
bottom part stays rather hot. Temperature seems to be a negative
influence on the life of the battery. IMO there are only two choices;
stop folding or remove the battery when the PB is used in desktop mode.

Here is the lowdown I found on Lithium based batteries;

Applecare-type insurance

2004-06-27 Thread Jim Katz
There may be a fix for this in the aftermarket service contract world. I
bought my TiBook from an authorized dealer and they have been doing my
Applecare warrantee work for the entire length of possible Applecare. Now
they are offering their own equivalent service contract to pick up where
Applecare left off. Same guys will be doing the same services. Perhaps there
are programs which have less stringent requirements you can find.

Another issue is price, of course. It is probably likely you can find a
working used laptop for the price of the service contract alone, but if you
like your machine and want to keep it running for three years, well, they've
got us by the s & c's.
