I had the best results with dynamic pages (database driven web sites),
which I assume are giving you these problems, with the application iCab
by setting download to go trough every link while staying at the server
and have no limit or limit to something like 20 levels. Using limitation
by folder or other similar settings never did come out successfully for
me. If you did, most likely you did not get all pages and that's why you
didn't find the pages offline. It's also possible that the links in HTML
are complex URLs that need a server do decode properly, which don't work
without relinking. This was before version 3 of iCab.

Web Devil have relinking for offline browsing, but that app have never
worked very often for me, especially not with dynamic pages., I've been
told command line app WGET is better and there should be GUI's for it if
you look around. One of the hardest sites to download successfully for me
have been Wired magazine. I'd really like to know how to get every page there.

You've done the usual total resetting like reset of NVRAM, PRAM reset and
also taking out the backup battery (if there is one) and leave it and
power cord out for 10 minutes or longer? If so, checking the boot sectors
with Disk Warrior or similar application and if no success, as have
already been suggested, a total reformat of the hard disc with error
checking would be the next logical step.

There could also be that RAM modules are to some extent non OS X
compatible. Perhaps you can test them on another machine with OS X
already running? Also, I'd install Panther from the beginning, not going
over Jaguar.

The Boot settings are changed with XPF from that point on, so you're correct.

Actually, not even a reset-all fixed this for me

Well, I can't even get into OpenFirmware..

Try and shut down the comp and let it sit for 15 seconds or so before you
boot up with Cmd-Opt-o-f pressed down. That helped me when I had this problem.

Only one of the mentioned possible problems in the XPF manual surfaced.

This was with XPFa9, XPFa14 and XPF a16.

OSXhints: A real workaround for the 8GB limit on older Macs

2004-07-06 Thread Mikael Byström
Did you guys see this one?

I've worked out a work-around for the 8GB limit for system volumes on
older Macintoshes. I'm writing this on a Beige G3 with a 27G system
partition, and I'm confident that it won't be rendered unbootable by
system updates or disk activity (the reason for the 8GB limit in the
first place). Most of the credit goes to Ryan Remple and his XPostFacto
tool for installing OS X on older, unsupported Macs -- the 'trick' relies
on using XPF's 'Helper Disk' feature. I haven't tried it, but I think it
should also work on Macintoshes that are affected by the 8GB limitation
but wouldn't otherwise need XPostFacto...

I did not have this problem with the 2 megs nor the 4 meg video card

problem you describe is fully explained somewhere on the XPF support

One of the hardest things about going to Mac from PC is realizing that
while on a PC, you might have to click on many areas and read several
prompts and follow directions through various wizards to do the same
thing on a Mac that might only require one click. The first thing you
should do is boot the hard drive from your OS 9 CD by holding down the
C key, etc. After the Mac is booted, double click on Drive Setup.
This is where you can specify your partitions, etc. You can also
perform a low level format if required. This type of format will
usually wipe out the HDD completely, but will take some time depending
on the size of your drive. Your next step is to double click on the
Install OS 9 icon, and follow the instructions. There really isn't a
need to worry about partitions at all just so you know. Once 9 is
installed, restart the Mac and make sure it boots without any problems.
snip
A Wallstreet requires OSX to be installed within the first 8GB of the
hard drive, so if you plan to use that, make sure you partition the
drive accordingly - start out with a 7.99GB partition. Drive Setup has
a Configuration tab for when you go to format the drive, that is where
you establish the number and size of partitions.

Re: OSXhints: A real workaround for the 8GB limit on older Macs

2004-07-06 Thread Adam Thayer
Yes, definitely interesting, but be aware you still need a partition
that you boot from to help and that needs to be in the first 8GB of
the drive, and it consumes space away from your OS X partition. Before
you do something like this, ask yourself if the work you have to put
into maintaining a system like this is worth it. The two big things
that don't make it worth it (to me) are:

- Must resync the helper disk for every minor update that requires a
reboot, or you will not be able to boot safely into X, experience
instability, or simply not have the update running.

- Must do the backup/install/restore shuffle on any major update. This
is a pain going through all the steps once, but having to do it every
18 months?

My advice? Don't expect to store all your stuff in your Home folder. I
use multiple partitions like I did in OS 9. Games, movies, music don't
reside on the main partition, but on others. Saves me the headache of
having to muck with the partitions and simply do backups when needed.

Adam Thayer

Does anyone have any recommendations on a Mac friendly KVM switch that would
allow me to use an existing Dell CRT (vga) monitor and keyboard/mouse with a

I am assuming the Dell is USB for the Mouse/Keyboard, but not 100% positive.
I have researched and have about a dozen or so manufacturers for these
switches, I just wanted to see if any Listers have a favorite/success story
to share for me to consider.

Thanks.

For any member who wants to force Safari to import their Netscape or IE

these steps.

1. Quit Safari if it is open.
2. Drag the target bookmark files back to their original location.
3. Open Terminal (/Applications/Utilities/).
4. Type this in the Terminal.
defaults delete com.apple.SafariNetscapeAndMozillaFavoritesWereImported
5. Press Return.
6. Type this in the terminal.
defaults delete com.apple.Safari IEFavoritesWereImported
7. Press Return.
8. Quit Terminal.
9. Open Safari.

 Once again,

I'm stuck wondering why Apple thinks everyone is gonna get all the
answers they need in there incredibly lacking help program. According
to it, Safari is supposed to import all my IE favorites the first time
it runs. This is simply not true. It doesn't do anything except boot
up. I check the bookmarks, and they are not there. I would like to
use Safari as my default browser, but until my favorites can be
imported, I guess I'm stuck with Explorer. I tried FireFox, but it to
doesn't import favorites from IE, although at least Firefox imports
bookmarks from Safari and Netscape automatically even though that
doesn't do anything for me. Any ideas?
