All you need to do is open the Terminal app. I'm not sure where it is
in 10.3.5. But if it's not in your Apps Folder or your Utilities
Folder, simply use Find. Then open the Terminal like any other
application. It will come up with the shell prompt ready to accept
your command(s).

You don't need to do anything to keep you computer awake. Just make
sure that the Energy Saving settings aren't set to put it to
sleep...period.

As I told Bruce in another thread a couple of days ago:

1) Open a new Finder window.
2) Choose Go -> Go to Folder (or press command+shift+G)
3) Type "/var/log" and press return.
4) Check the modification date on "daily.out" -- if it's today, then
your scripts ran last night.
(daily.out is the log file for the daily script. There's also
weekly.out and monthly.out)

>It would be appreciated if someone could/would send me the needed info

Did you mean "off-list" rather than off-line? If people only respond
off-list, how is anyone supposed to know whether you received any
help from someone else or not? And some of us even make mistakes
every once in an while. When advice is given via the list, someone
(probably more than one) will catch an error.

HTH,

Just for another data point to support Laurent's advice. I also
highly recommend PBparts. They have been in business for a number of
years and have developed a stellar reputation within the Mac
community. They have quality parts and are trustworthy.

My only complaint is that in some cases their prices have gone up
quite a bit over the past couple of years or so. But I'm sure that
John is experiencing the same thing on his prices for the parts.

Good guy, good service, quality products. And IIRC located in Phoenix

TiBook display replacement (was: TiBook display crisis)

2004-10-01 Thread gianfranco sciacca
Thanks to all who gave suggestions to try and tackle my 15" TiBook
display problem. Unfortunately the display is still dark with brief
flashing at startup and the "explosion effect" after shutting it down
or sleeping it is visible also in daylight.

A local Apple Centre gave me an approximate quote of up to EUR 1000 ($
1200) for a display replacement. They would not consider the inverter
as being the problem, which means that they will replace the display in
any case, or in the worst case the display+inverter. This is
economically not viable, so I consider looking for a defective machine
with a good display to revive mine by myself (it's a 1GHz).

My question to the list is: are displays and inverter boards / cables
the same across the entire DVI range (667 MHz to 1GHz), or the 1GHz
shares parts only with the 867 MHz? Scouring websites offering PB
parts, I've come across contradictory information. Many do sell display
assemblies working for 667 MHz to 1 GHz, others have separate parts for
667/800 and 867/1000. Useless to say, would anyone have a good display
to throw away, throw it my way :-)

cheers, gianfranco

They are not interchangeable. The ambient light sensors would not fit and
the connectors are of the ribbon type and pinned differently.

Yes, but you don't want to be doing it frequently as the little plastic pins
will break off. Replacing the keyboard would be the best option. It's not
as easy as on previous models, but in about 20 minutes a layman could do it.

Mike,

Hop to VersionTracker.com. Search for MacJanitor. Download, extract and run.
Click the "Click to allow tasks" button, enter your administrative password,
then click "All Tasks". You should be set.

Another utility that is also free and can do that maintenance, and more, is

When Office 2004 was first released some reviewers claimed it was slower and
I recall one backing his claims up with comparisons of spell checking and
scrolling through a document with both versions. However I couldn't
reproduce those results with any of my files on my personal or lab machines.
Of course these are all 800+ mHz machines with at least 512 meg RAM. Slower
machines, particularly G3 based computers, with less memory might well
notice a difference.

Re: Lombard Processor or Processor Upgrade

2004-10-01 Thread Herbert Goodfriend
So: clues for sources of reasonably priced 400MHz processors? Or for an
upgrade card? (Assuming one would work.) I've seen the ones that run
$300+, and I just can't afford that.
Lynn,
Last night I was scrounging the web for spare parts for a Pismo. I
saw a used Lombard processor board going for $139. I think is was at
Daystar Technology . They also do a
Lombard G4 upgrade for about $250, but the board has to be OK so I
guess your cache problem would rule that out.

Other sources are PowerBook Parts, PowerBookMedic, Baucom Computers
etc. Also PowerBook Central which is an aggregator of offerings from
various sites.
