OT: Airport Grey BS and Airport Express BS? Sony Playstation 2?
Hello all, I have a Grey Airport Base Station working with my Pismo. The BS is connected to a cable modem. My TV/Stereo are on the other side of my living space and no way of connecting the cable modem to near the TV. My question is if I were to get an Airport Express BS and plug it next to my TV, could: 1. It talk to the grey Airport BS? 2. I connect a Sony Playstation 2 to the Airport Express BS and play online games? 3. Does the grey Airport BS need to be upgraded to an Airport Extreme/Express BS? Not a pro in networking but I really want to play online games with a Sony Playstation 2. Any input would be most appreciated. Michael -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Unless you have some special model of television set, it won't be able to talk to your base station, grey or express. I'm not sure about how a Playstation connects to the Internet but I would assume that you can probably connect it to any base station that provides DHCP. No AirPort Base Station can be upgraded to a later model. Re: OT: Airport Grey BS and Airport Express BS? Sony Playstation2?
I think what Michael means is, could it [the AirPort Express base station] talk to the grey AirPort base station?. The answer depends on what is meant by talk. Michael, do you intend to use this as a repeater station to extend the range of your network, as a wireless bridge to enable your PS2 to connect to the wireless network, or something entirely different? HELP with Lombard upgrading to Panther
Hi, I have a Lombard. I tried to put Panther on it and it didn't work. Had a hunch I had some bad memory - or actually one of the chips that is recognized half size due to configuration. Anyway ordered the right chip (low profile for lower slot) now have 64 meg (OEM) on top, and 256 on bottom and the system profiler sees both. Now when I put the panther disk in it continually freezes on the first installer screen (see the outline of the screen but no type) and the computer is frozen - trackpad does work/clock not counting etc.) and can't go anyfarther. Rebooted about two dozen times with no success - freezes at same point. I have 9.2.2 currently installed. Any suggestions? Option? - can I put the bottom memory into the top slot and try with just that? or switch them? I know OSX is finicky with memory. TIA Linda -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Maybe due to virtual memory, I don't know. Well, even though you had a new 256MB SODIMM with the correct specs, I would still think that this is the problem. Did you have any kind of peripheral connected to your Lombard? USB mouse, printer? If so, you might want to try again without any connected peripheral. -Laurent. -- Laurent Daudelin Developer, Multifamily, ESO, Fannie Mae mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]Washington, DC, USA Usual disclaimers apply *** -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: lombard 10.3
Hi, Gladys and Linda. If you put a 128 MB module in (or a combination of 2 64s or 128s) the install should go smoothly (but slowly). After which, you should be able to reinstall the larger RAM sticks and run mostly problem-free. I believe there's an undocumented problem with having 256MB sticks installed in the Lombard - I certainly found that to be true in my attempts to install 10.3 on my 333MHz bronze PowerBook with 512MB installed. After a successful install, the only issues I found with leaving the (2) 256 MB modules installed was: 1 - Any attempt to run the Disk Utility's 'Repair Permissions' function will result in the 'psychedelic' frozen screen problem, requiring a hard reboot to escape. (Quite scary the first time you see this.) 2 - Copying large files over a network can also cause the freeze. Anything larger than about 500 MB in size is a possible killer in my experience, though I have occasionally been able to copy a file larger than 1 GB in size. Other than those two caveats, I've seen no other anomalies once the install has successfully concluded with the lower memory complement in place. Some Lombard machines reportedly do not have this issue, but the ones I've seen do. Mine would install with a 256 in either slot, as long as the machine did not have more than 384 MB installed. Perhaps it is a question of marginal RAM, but the phenomenon seems more widespread than that diagnosis would justify. From a practical viewpoint, just to be safe, I'd recommend 'demoting' your memory to the lower amount to do other System upgrades, where a Permissions Repair is part of the normal install. Hope this helps. Rick hi: i am trying to upgrade my aunt's lombard. i installed 256 ram in the lower slot and a 60gb 7200 rpm's hd. when i tried to install os 10.3 all went fine up to a point in which the screen turned into a series of static big blue, black and white lines or a pattern of thin lines jumping all over the screen. i tried 3 times with the same thing happening about the same time. the first time i just let it run w/out close attention. i installed os 10.2 without a problem. i remember reading recently about several listas who have installed 10.3 in a lombard. could you tell me what am i doing wrong? tried searching, but so far nothing has turned up. tia, g Hi, I have a Lombard. Re: Sony CRX830E upgrade for Pismo

I have found it at a few Mac parts sites, and it's pretty pricey--around $180. However, when I google the part number, I find lots of places that sell it for much less--like $70. Would there be a difference in the drive between Mac and PC vendors? Is there anything I should be wary of here? Thanks for any advice, Kate Absolutely no difference if it's the bare drive only. Check to see if the Mac dealers happen to sell it already installed in the expansion bay unit (doubtful). I've used this same drive in a Pismo and it works great. I hacked the Authoring Support plugin for OS 9, which you can download from the xlr8yourmac web site. With it, the drive is recognized in 9 by Disk Burn and iTunes. In X you can use Patchburn 3 (free dowload) to do the same thing. The drive is not set to Master, so unless your expansion bay unit can be, or has been, modified (see xlr8yourmac re. soldering a pair of tiny pins on the expansion bay unit's controller board), the drive will have the following problems: you won't be able to boot from a CD by holding down the C key (though you can boot from a CD by holding down the Option key); the drive will not be recognized after you wake the powerbook from sleep; it will not be recognized if hot-swapped (in both cases, you have to restart the Pismo to have the drive recognized by the system). The drive works great with Toast, Disk Burn, iTunes, Dragon Burn, etc. Plays DVDs just fine. The faceplate is black and rectangular, but looks okay in the expansion bay. NOTE: the person who bought my Sony unit told me that he successfully swapped the faceplate to it from his original Pismo DVD drive (the LG model). Highly recommended at $70, especially if you have a modified expansion bay unit; though it'll work okay even without that. Good luck. Chris -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and...
