Re: MP3 editor required - any suggestions?

2004-12-12 Thread Ben Dyer
You can do it in iTunes, just use the start/end points in the track
info to select the bit you want, and choose Convert to MP3 (or
something to that effect). It'll create a new MP3 file with the same
ID3 tags, and only the data between the start and end points.

Alternatively, convert the file to AIFF, and use virtually any sound
utility out there--in fact, you could do it in QuickTime Player, if you
have QT Pro.

Cheers,
Ben

It looks like you're dragging the System folder on the CD to the hard
disk. Instead, try double-clicking the Installer program on the CD.

These all allow serial devices to be connected to USB

to be connected to legacy serial ports.

Would PowerPrint for Serial Ports help? Supports only the Classic OS.

Serial to Parallel printer adaptor.

Or you could combine a CardBuss USB card with PowerPrint USB and have
printer drivers for most any printer. Still, only works with the Classic OS.

ibook booting from panther

2004-12-12 Thread Dylan Moore
Well it doesn't work for me, either, and I really need it to.

If I start from a CD, i get the apple for a few seconds, then the apple
glitches slightly (gets offset, wraps around and gets garbled around
the edge) never shows the spinning loader icon, and sits there. Thats
awesome. WTF?
I'll try using the CDs it came with, but I'd much prefer the control
that the real install discs offer. ppfft.
Is there anyone this WILL work for, or a workaround?

Re: Pismo max ram and floppy options

2004-12-12 Thread Jeff Hubatka
Subject: Pismo max ram and floppy options
Date: Sat, 11 Dec 2004 17:00:51 -0500
From: chris [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I've got a PowerBook G3/500 Firewire model (Pismo).
I'm running OS X.3 on it, but it spools the hard drive OFTEN which
drags
performance to a halt. Currently it has 256 MB ram. So I want to max
out
the ram, but I'm unsure if the max is 512 or 1024.

Apple and EveryMac claim 512. However, I know Apple often specs the max
lower then it really is (they spec based on what could be tested when
the
unit was released, so if 256 was the largest chip size in 2000, they
will
claim it tops out at 512 (2x 256)).

LowEndMac claims 1024 is the max, as does Crucial.com.
Before I spend $200 getting a pair of 512 chips, I wanted to know if
anyone was actually running 1024 successfully in a Pismo (and are there
any gotchas I should be aware of).
Have 1GB in a 500mhz Pismo with no issues. Remember the lower chip has
to be low-profile, while the upper can be either type.

Also, as long as I am on the Pismo topic, I want to get a floppy drive
for it. I found an Apple Tech Note that says the Pismo can use the
Lombard drive modules (but not always the other way around). I was
under
the impression the Lombard has a floppy drive available for it. Can
anyone confirm that I can in fact use a Lombard floppy in my Pismo? I'd
rather get a floppy drive that uses the drive bay over a USB based one.

Or does anyone know of a 3rd party floppy drive module that works with
the Pismo?
Thanks!
I have a VST SuperDisk module - they are often on the Smartdisk web
site as sale/clearance items, or of course on eBay they are also cheap.
It works fine in OSX, OS9 required a driver which is still available
online.

Are you installing it as Classic on OS X? If so, just insert your disk
and install. Don't try to copy it from the disk.

After you install OS 9, you need to go to your prefs in OS X and choose
your OS 9 system folder for Classic

What I'm going to suggest won't do you any good now but you might want
to
think about it for the future. Large external hard drive prices can be
had
for $125 to $150 and several companies (Maxtor and Seagate for
example) sell
drives specifically designed for one button backup. Get one.

Mine has three partitions. One contains a backup of my 'Book as it
exists
today. I back up my documents folder to it weekly, the OS and
Applications
folder every month or two. The second contains the previous OS
version. The
third partition I use to store important downloads and comes into play
when
Apple issues a new OS upgrade. At least for a month or two I'll keep
three
versions of the OS around.
Thanks for the advice. I have a 30 gig internal in my ibook and an 80
gig external. I can do this for the future as yousay.

Re: ibook booting from panther

2004-12-12 Thread Tim Collier
I experienced a similar problem with my iMac G5. I wanted to repair
the disk and permissions as I like to do about once per month. This
was the first time that I was doing this and out of habit, I got down
the Panther installation box. I put the CD in and restarted holding
the the C key. I got the Apple logo and then the booting stopped and a
few pixels on the display went a bit odd. I tried this 3 times before
I called Apple. They told me, much to my embarrassment that the
minimum OS that my iMac will boot is 10.3.5 and I was trying to boot
off of 10.3. So, I went and retrieved the disks that came with the
iMac and it booted off THAT CD without any problem.
And since you just brought it up. I thought I would make a test.I
also have a new iBook and I looked just now at the installation disks
that came with it. 10.3.5. I just tried to boot off of the original
Panther install disks and got the same symptoms as when I tried to use
them in my iMac. Since yours is a 1 gig iBook and mine is a 1.2 gig
iBook, I tend to think your minimum OS is also higher than 10.3 and
therefore the source of the problem you encountered.

If possible you should repair permissions booted from the harddisk.
Your install CD is likely and older version of the OS and the system
knows how to repair permissions of 3rd party software if booted from

Sherlock 2 problems

2004-12-12 Thread Gary Goldberg
I've been indexing my Wall Street's backup
Jaz disk (about 1 1/3 Gb on it) using Sherlock 2.
I set Preferences to do not index icons
and folders which were labelled cool, yet
Sherlock is indexing images (which it's not
supposed to do) and some of the .pdf files
I labelled as cool.

Right now my Jaz disk is writing
95% of the time and scanning only about
5% of the time and the indexing has been
going on 9 hours.

Anyone know what's going on?

choose your OS 9 system folder for Classic

Well, if, like you said, you did erase everything on the drive, then OS X is
gone. Like Tim said, insert the disk and install. That's your only option.
Then, if you want OS X, you can install it on the same disk after OS 9 is
installed. If you want to install each OS independently and would like to be
able to wipe one while keeping the other, you would need to partition your
drive in 2 partitions, before installing anything...

Blue Screen of Death n.: [common] This term is closely related to the older
Black Screen of Death but much more common (many non-hackers have picked it
up). Due to the extreme fragility and bugginess of Microsoft Windows,
misbehaving applications can readily crash the OS (and the OS sometimes
crashes itself spontaneously). The Blue Screen of Death, sometimes decorated
with hex error codes, is what you get when this happens. (Commonly
abbreviated BSOD.)

X on lombard

2004-12-12 Thread gladys pérez-almiroty
my thanks to all who told me about the software problem on the lombard.
i took out one 256 ram module and was able to install os 10.3 without a
problem. afterwards, i installed the chip back and it ran beautifully.
just for kicks, i took out the old chip, and left the machine with the
new chip while installing the system software. it made no difference as
long as it had 256.

OS X Backup/Cloning

2004-12-12 Thread Greg Wallace
SuperDuper was just mentioned as a OS X Backup/Cloning tool.

Besides Carbon Copy Cloner (which I've had a few problems with) are there any
other good softwares to create a backup system on another partition?

laurent:
this is what i did:
installed 10.3-removing a 256 module. once done, put the 256 back in
and installed software. then put os 9 disk and tried to install. since
i could not install, i dragged the system software form disk in the off
chance i might work. as suspected, it didn't work. then i booted from
disk and installed os 9 from disk. all over content was erased.
an i getting this right now: install oos9 first, then install over it
x? i was going to go for the partition alternative, but it is for my
aunt and this id her first computer and i don't want to confuse her
more than necessary. she just saw the light- came from the microsoft
side.

If I start from a CD, i get the apple for a few seconds, then the
apple glitches slightly (gets offset, wraps around and gets garbled
around the edge) never shows the spinning loader icon, and sits
there. Thats awesome. WTF?
I'll try using the CDs it came with, but I'd much prefer the control

Is there anyone this WILL work for, or a workaround?
What you quoted below was my response.
I quoted your response because that is what I was responding to.
