Despite the GUI (and some other funkiness), MacOSX is Unix underneath,
and sometimes these problems are easier to fix when you think in Unix
rather than Mac.

So, if you have a second account with administrative privileges, log
into it. If you don't, create one and log into it. Get a Terminal up
(Applications/Utilities/Terminal).

Say your username is fubar: substitute fubar with your real user
name. At the prompt type each of these lines separately, pressing
Return at the end:

   sudo su - fubar
   mv -i Library oldLibrary
   exit
   exit

The -i option to mv is to make sure it will ask you before doing
anything destructively.

Next, log out of the administrative account, and log back into
yours. The system will recreate a nice fresh Library directory for
you. If that fixes your problem, then you can move things from your
oldLibrary directory into the freshly created Library directory as
needed. Or, just live with the new one.

If it does not fix the problem, and you want to go back to the way
things were, log out and log in as that other user again, and type
in the Terminal:

   sudo su - fubar
   mv -i Library freshLibrary
   mv -i oldLibrary Library
   exit
   exit

You can delete the freshLibrary directory later if you wish.

Larry
This worked!! I want to thank everyone who took the time to help. I
hope one day I can return the favor..

New iBook memory ??? PC2100 same as desktop ???

2005-01-14 Thread Larry le Mac
Thinking of buying a new iBook 12 and would then like to add
some memory, but not too keep on Apple's prices.
Is the DDR266 memory the same as PC2100 ???
I take it this is the same type that would fit a desktop ???
I have plenty (!) in my MDD 2x1GHz, would such a 512MB stick fit ???
I believe it's PC2700 in that one.

no, you need SODIMM type memory, same as PC laptops.
Standard computer memory wont physically fit in the iBook (or any
other laptop for that matter)

it's SO-DIMM (how dim can one be...)

One of Sweden's biggest computer suppliers sell 512MB
SO-DIMM PC2100 for less than half price of Apple !!!
I was right about DDR266 = PC2100 ?!

Re: backlighting turned off suddenly in PB G4 / 550

2005-01-14 Thread Mikael Byström
Update:
It now seems clear this is a hardware problem as I only need to
reposition the display, type on the keyboard or insert a CD for the
backlight to go ff. I guess it's likely to be a cable problem of some
sort, but it doesn't seem to be a normal loose cable problem as setting
the machine to sleep and reawake it works every time. Also there's no
flickering of any kind. It just goes off. This makes it more likely in my
mind for the problem to be the invertor board or in the worst case the
light bulbs in the display.

As I do have the 400 also, I wonder if I can try and replace the invertor
board and display from it just to see if any of those parts is the
problem. Then buy this part 2nd hand and replace it for good. Are these
particular parts from the 400 and 550 compatible to your knowledge?

Mikael Byström said:

I have a Powerbook G4 / 550 here that ocassionally suddenly turns off the
backlight after just a short time of use. Typically when I read the
display for just under a minute and then press the space bar. I can see
the makeouts of the picture, but the backlight is off. Turning the
controls doesnt help. Setting the machine to sleep do help, but it's very
irritating to have to set the machine to sleep all the time while working.

Last time this problem occured a Open Firmware reset-all seemed to fix it
for a while at least. But I need to know what brings forward this problem
in this model as I'm not the only one using it. Could it be some kind of
hardware problem? Any suggestions for testing the hardware?

Please help! Problems with an Hp d135 All-in-One

2005-01-14 Thread Zoltan Batiz
Hello Folks,
Hp is pissin' me off. Personally, I can't stand 'em, but my grandma
insisted she buy an Hp. . .(past experience was good. . .ya' know, when
the company actually made good products. . .hehe.)

Anyway, she's got a Pismo 500/1gig RAM/30gig, 10.3.7 and an Hp d135
All-In-One. There is no communication between the computer and the
printer. There was before, but not now. Now, let me be more specific.
I can scan, I can copy and the fax feature works fine. So to say no
communication isn't the case. There's no printing communication. Hp
ehelp just wants me to go out and buy print heads and finance more ink
carts. . .trying to say the printer won't communicate with a Mac if
there's no ink. (scam?) Anyway, anyone out there with this printer
PLEASE HELP. My grandma won't leave me alone! She spent $400.00 on
that printer (currently worth $40.00 on eBay) and I've always been her
tech guy, so I don't want to let her down. Thanks to any ideas. I
also heard that for some reason, Fast User Switching causes problems
with the Hp software. . .true?

Thanks in advance,
Zoltan (who prefers Epson)

Bought the HP *specifically* because my Epson wasn't playing nice with

iBook G-Mac server - WiFi functions ???

2005-01-14 Thread Larry le Mac
I am planning to have a G-Mac with 5 harddisks internally
and two external FW disks, totalling about 1TB, to house
my software, data, music, films etc.
I am then planning to buy a new iBook with AirPort so that
I can do everything from anywhere in the house or in the
garden without ties.
However,
Let's say I'm logged into a Carracho server with the iBook
and have one of the servers disks mounted, then I download
something from the server to the server's disk.
- Would the download then go:
ADSL-router-iBook-router-server or directly to the server ???

But I suppose most Carracho servers produce an average

Not really. Remember that, in order for you to be able to download a file
from the Internet on your iBook and put it on your server, you need to have
one of your server's volume mounted on your iBook (that means file sharing).
So, basically, the file gets from the Internet through ADSL, then through
the router, then your iBook, then through the router again to finally end on
your server...

BTW, I even think that 20-50KB/s on Caracho is very optimistic!

Thats correct. I just bought the new ibook. The oinly thing is that you
need a min. of 10.3.5 OS to boot. That means that Norton Disk Warrior
won't boot because they have OSX 10.3.2.

desktop, what resolution can the iBook 12 32MB VRAM go up to
on that screen ?

AFAIK the iBooks don't support desktop spanning, although I think there
may be a hack that allows it (at least on some models.) I think you
have to buy a PowerBook to do desktop spanning.

I think I'd start with a reset of the PMU. That fixed a boot issue

On my iBook I can only do mirroring, at 1024x768 or less. This is a
current model 14 iBook.
NOT as mirror, as an extended desktop.

Unless you mean smearing it with warm liquids ;-) yes, S-video is
hot-swappable.

I'm not sure it'll display properly (haven't done it in a while), but
you can plug it in and out while the computer is on without causing
damage.

Hey Bruce,
As I recall the WS manual states that the television should be shut
off when connecting an S-video cable, and that the PB should be put
to sleep.

Two questions:
1. Is there any type of voltage on a S-video line?

2. Does putting a PB to sleep (a WS in this case) have any effect on the ports?
(I've always assumed that the reason Apple recommends putting the PB
to sleep for some connections is that the when a PB wakes up, the OS
scans the ports each time, thus would recognize a new connection that
was done during sleep. I don't know if that is correct or not.)

Thanx,

Bob

Any damage to the LCD unit won't show up in Grab, because Grab takes
the picture data directly from the framebuffer (an area in memory that
contains the image being written to the screen). There's almost no hope
for your screen; it would be best to get it repaired as soon as
possible.

Screen Spanning Doctor
(http://www.rutemoeller.com/mp/ibook/ibook_e.html) works on all
Radeon-based iBooks and eMacs, including the latest models (it also
works on the iMac G4 thru G5). I have had it installed on my iBook
G4/933 since the day I got it, and it works flawlessly.

Presumably, the iBook supports much the same resolutions as the Mac
mini does with VGA -- up to 1920x1080.

Apple Refusal to repair IBook LCD Bright spots

2005-01-14 Thread simont
Hi All,
I recently send my 14 G4 933 Mhz iBook for repair because bright
spots on the LCD has appeared over time. Initially it was one spot,
and then gradually increased in size and numbers over 5 months or
so. I had purchased AppleCare for the iBook and so did not send the
unit in until the spots finally became annoying enough. Today, I
receive from the Apple repair depot, with a message that the
technician has determined that the spots were a result of accidental
damage, and a replacement of the LCD would cost $759?! Needless to
say, I was more than a little shocked at this conclusion, because 1)
the spots appeared over time, and if it were due to damage, it would
not take 5 months to appear, and 2) if I had babied my unit any
more, I'd be singing it to sleep -- the unit is in ABSOLUTELY
prestine condition, no scuff marks, no scratches, not even oily
stain marks at the wrist rests.
After the shocking news, I was then transferred to escalated
customer support, where I tried to explained to the support rep
points 1 2. I also brought up that this was a replacement unit to
another that I had purchased on Amazon.com, but had returned because
the spots were more serious than this unit. Finally, I mentioned
that does not appear to be an isolated insident, as a quick search
on Google for Bright spot LCD ibook g4 yields 4 hits on the first
page regarding users reporting such this issue on the 14 iBook.
The customer rep. retorted by saying 1) there are no
reported/official instances of such issues on this unit (she put me
on hold twice, once to speak to engineering, and once to speak to
production), and 2) the technician did not find warped hinges, or
external signs that the LCD might be poorly mounted. She then
proposed that the best option for me would be to live with the
bright spots since the repair is so costly. She also suggested that
I could write to Corporate headquarters but it is unlikely to change
the outcome of the diagnosis.
Out of frustration, I went down to the local Apple to store to the
genius bar, where the genius mentioned he has heard of a similar
issue from another ibook.
Now comes the magic questions. 1) How I can I get Apple to do this
repair? I'm 100% certain that the bright spots are not due to any sort
of accidental damage. 2) Does anyone have a similar experience? 3) For
the Apple techs out there, have you heard of such an issue appearing on
an iBook?

Responses are appreciated, and thanks for reading.

Simon

PS. FYI, the iBook went to Tennesse for repair, and the customer rep I
was speaking with was in Austin, Texas.

Wireless router woes

2005-01-14 Thread Claire Hart
We have five computers connected through a Netgear wireless router to
DSL. The wireless computers are my PowerBook and my son's PC laptop.
The wired computers are my iMac and my sons' PC towers. Last summer
when we made the switch to DSL, everyone said, Get a Netgear router!
While the wired computers are always able to be online, the wireless
connection sometimes doesn't work. The fix was to disconnect the
router's power for a moment, then plug it back in, and the two wireless
computers would have the signal restored. Since mid-December, the
wireless part hasn't worked at all. Well, let me take that back: one
day out of the clear blue it did work. Of course, now everyone is
telling us, Why did you get a Netgear? You should have gotten a
Linksys! Our ISP suggested looking for firmware updates on the
router, which we did. Netgear's tech support explained a fix, which
didn't help, then sent us to critical care tech support and they
recommended the same fix as the first group. We are currently
ping-ponging emails back and forth trying to determine the problem. I
am really thinking of buying an Airport Extreme base (or that pre-N
router with the three antennas) for the wireless computers, and
leaving the wired computers on the existing system. However, I hate to
have to buy another router when we already have one. (Planned
obsolescence?)

Does anyone have a suggestion?
Thanks,
Claire

2005-01-14 Thread Kyle Hansen
On 1/14/05 10:53 PM, Claire Hart [EMAIL PROTECTED] Spew into the
Cybertrough:

Yes. Dump the Netgear and get a Buffalo. Either that or an Apple Branded
base station, but they are expensive.

Yeah, mine does that too. I have an Airport Extreme base unit waiting
for me to get round to slotting it into place instead of the netgear router.
