pb g4 spring clean
hello all my g4 power book [60Gb 640 ram] is not exactly performing at its best at the mo' in terms of how slow certain tasks are taking - I wondered whether partitioning may be helpful. I have a feeling that it's because of one or all of the following reasons: - lots of pics - about 2000 in the iphoto library - lots of mp3s - about 1200 in itunes - several imovie movies - about 25Gb - lots of emails - about 500Mb in current application - lots of websites - lots of reasonably well ordered work files - lots more stray files and folders - lots of apps - half of which I use regularly others are then for occasional use * my main concern is that all of these include lots of individuals files and I believe it slows the finder down keeping tabs on them all - ie the fewer items on a drive the better, irrespective of their size? - one or two apps seem to cause particular trouble, esp dreamweaver which has always seemed really slow and seems to cause trouble if I leave it open when not in use - eudora is also crashing quite a lot - just upgraded to 6.2 but I think it's unhappy about managing lots of files - and I get about 500 spam messages a day for a start! ** so what shall I do? I know that I need to have a good old spring clean and use an external drive to store content [it's already quite full of movie files but I can find 20Gb] but I know that the problem will return shortly afterwards as I will keep adding pics/movies/mp3s anyway so I wondered whether this makes me a candidate for partitioning the hard drive and have files like mp3s/movies/pics stored on one and work on another? and/or I can divide it up into what I need every day and what I need occasionally and compress/archive some of the stuff on the hard drive [but this still means the same number of files on the drive doesn't it] I also wondered whether I could set up two user profiles and have two partitions and keep the bulk of my file-heavy stuff separately that way? or something else I would welcome any advice thanks Mark -- Mark Walker Project Executive, theplacetobe.net theplacetobe.net is an innovative not for profit partnership that is improving the quality of local information available to people in Brighton Hove. emergency word doc
I emailed the other day about my dead HD, which I sent off for data recovery. First, the data recovery guy said he could see the HD and sent it back to me, although I don't have it yet. Second, I put another working HD in the same computer and that one wasn't recognized, either, so the HD isn't the problem. Suggestions? Third, and MOST important: I was able to grab some needed files I thought in the computer's dying breath. It turns out, though, that the icon says PC and I get a message that it isn't a Word file when I try to open it. It's urgent that I have access to that file today, but Text Edit won't open it and neither will Simple Text. Does anyone know what I can use to open the file? Interestingly, some of the files I grabbed were OK, some had a lot of code embedded, but I could still salvage them, some had PC icons and some had Word icons. Having a Word icon didn't seem to make any difference as far as the quality or accessibility goes. Any help sent directly will really be appreciated. G4 PBDVI Battery Monitor
Hello everyone, I have a 15 PowerBook G4/DVI that seems to get about 2-2.5 hours of battery time, under normal use. This battery was replaced under AppleCare about a year ago. The problem is that the battery monitor in the menu bar never reports accurately. It still shows 64% when the computer reports no battery left, and goes to sleep. BTW, all the lights on the battery are lit when charged. Tried the PMU reset, and the PB passes internal battery test, i.e. holds all settings when disconnected and off battery for 10 minutes. Somewhere in the last few 10.3.x updates some people reported false battery readings and early shutdowns. The easiest solution was to scrap the Apple software and use another from an outside source. Some had success with resetting the PMU, others with the reset NVRAM reset all trick. For others only the dropping of Apple's battery monitor and using another worked. I've been using Slim Battery Monitor since I first got my Al-Book, I just liked the look of it better and I've never had a problem. As for the original data/drive: If you have access to a G3/G4 tower model get yourself an adapter to connect the laptop drive to a standard 3.5 inch hard drive. They're available for $10-15. Re: WallStreet Battery
FWIW, I had a Pismo battery rebuilt in Taipei by an electronics shop - cost was 3000 NT (~US$ 95) The battery leds no longer work, but battery did not need recalibration; after rebuilding, the battery life display showed the same time remaining as before, around one hour, but it would discharge to zero, but Pismo would keep operating for much longer. Each time I recharged, the battery would show a longer capacity - now showing just under 5 hours, on a G4 Pismo 550 Mhz 10.3.7. That is with the lower capacity cells than the ones in the 7200 mah batteries - maybe 2000 or 2200 mah (cells are 3 parallel gangs of 3 in series) Have not done discharge time test, will do and advise. YMMV. On 12/02/2005, at 11:39 AM, G-Books wrote: Hello all. Can someone direct me to a link for rebuilding the battery in a Wallstreet? Thanks for all the suggestions I have received from you. Ken Vann - I don't think this has been done successfully. The Lithium Ion battery pack for the Wallstreet (and others) is a smart battery, with an IC integrated into the circuit. Even if you could find the proper cells and get them inside the glued together pack, it would be a real challenge to reprogram the chip for the new cells. That was exactly my experience. I was able to rebuild my Pismo battery after it went dead but the PowerBook never wanted to recharge it... -Laurent. -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and...
