Wallstreet not behaving
Lately my WS 292, OS 10.2.8 has started doing something weird: It will start ok a few times but from time to time it will not start, it will just make a small click click when the button is pressed. If I try with the battery the clicking is slow, and if is on ac current the clicking will be very fast. I found that the only way to make it re-start is to physically unplug the hard drive and the card where the memoty goes and then re-plug them Does this ring a bell to someone? Thanks .Hector I. So, Besides all these odd recommendations involving freezers and stoves, I guess nobody ever tried actually opening up a HDD and replace the bearings? Is this one of those things that's simply not done? Are drives made in a way that prevents this? And on that note, wouldn't it be cool if HDD manufacturers could make their drives with a little hole on the top or bottom where the user could plop a dap of oil once a year to keep the bearings in top shape? My iPod was the same way, in my hands one day before it was supposed to ship (engraved, shipped from Shanghai). My wife's iPod mini (green, also engraved), on the other hand, shipped when Apple said it would and was in my hands exactly when FedEx's website said it would be. For my PowerBook, I just couldn't wait, so I called every Apple Store in the Los Angeles area until the new ones were in. I ended up getting it February 2nd, and have been loving it ever since. By the way, I know that the larger models have improved keyboard illumination, but is the keyboard itself different? My new 12 keys feel a lot better and are much quieter than my old 12 was, and I already thought that the old one was close to perfection. Re: New iBooks/PB's compared to Pismo's, etc.
I see good and bad to having the ports on the side. Having just sold my Pismo (and still having a Lombard in the family, not to mention a ThinkPad) I do like the rear-mounted ports when sitting at a desk with stuff plugged in. However, when actually plugging something in, like my iPod, camera or other peripheral that is not always there, the side-mounted port is easier to locate and use without disrupting the PowerBook. Duplicate ports would be great, but would make for too large a machine and would also be unsightly. I think I am leaning towards Apple's current side-mounted ports because I usually just use the laptop as-is, and I love the drop-down hinge for flying, making a lower overall profile (bad for neck and shoulders) that is less prone to passenger-in-front-reclining syndrome. Why doesn't Apple make a PowerBook like the Pismo, Lombard, etc. and put the ports in the back? The way I've got my Pismo set up at home, every port, with the exception for the audio in, video out and modem, are connected. Granted, my internet is wireless, but still; if I had the new model, I'd have a bunch of unsightly wires sticking out the side. I'm greedy when it comes to screen real-estate, so I always have two monitors. The 17 didn't appeal to me due to the poorly designed keyboard. I couldn't believe that Apple never considered making the worlds first laptop that had a full sized keyboard. . . complete with a 10 key. There's room on the 17 for this. . .instead the 17 just has odd looking spaces on both sides of the keyboard, not to mention ports on the side. Ugh. . . I'm optimistic though, and not in a rush; at the moment, I have no need for any more VRAM, which to me is the main reason to sell off the Pismo. Plus, with the G4/550 from FastMac installed, my Pismo is zooming. I think I'll wait to see if the new PowerBook G5 models have the features that still sets apart the Pismo and the like from the others. (fingers crossed.) Everything was a go. . . except for one little hardware feature I noticed at the last minute. All of the connectivity ports for the new PB's are on the side, like most iBooks. (fingers crossed.) I went from a Pismo to a 17 and I think I actually prefer the ports on the side. Whenever you make a connection, you don't have to get behind the PowerBook, or stand up above it to see where you're plugging the connector. As for the keyboard, I think it's a big improvement over the Pismo's keyboard. It's seems a little stiffer which I do like since I kinda of punch the keys maybe harder than the average people. Plus, don't forget that the space on each side of the keyboard is used to house the speakers and the microphone. Don't hold your breath for the G5 PowerBooks, you could die of suffocation... -Laurent. -- Laurent Daudelin AIM/iChat: LaurentDaudelinhttp://nemesys.dyndns.org Logiciels Nemesys Software mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] frag n.,v.: [from Vietnam-era U.S. military slang via the games Doom and Quake] 1. I think I am leaning towards Apple's current side-mounted ports because I usually just use the laptop as-is, and I love the drop-down hinge for flying, making a lower overall profile (bad for neck and shoulders) that is less prone to passenger-in-front-reclining syndrome. Re: New iBooks/PB's compared to Pismo's, etc.
I use mine mostly as a portable (hence choosing the 12 over the 15 or 17), and rarely plug anything in at all, except for my iPod, camera or AC power. I never really got the whole desktop replacement thing. If I want to work at my desk, that's what my desktop Power Mac is for, which easily plays nice with my PowerBook using the PB in target disk mode.
