Re: Headsets
And I thought this would be simple. I want to buy a headset for my Powerbook G4 to use mostly for language programs. I am finding many different kinds with many different prices and little explanation of what makes one better than another. What is the experience of people here as to specifications, features, and brands to look for? TIA Peter I can't comment on models of headsets, but I want to point out that the sound input port is line level, which means that most mics don't just work. I have heard time and again people saying the headphones work, but not the mic. For me, the solution has been to connect (basically, *any*) headset to this nice little gadget called iMic (from Griffin). It connects to a usb port and gives both sound in and out. It has a little switch that allows the sound in port in it to be either line level or mic level. Works like a charm, no drivers needed in Mac OS X, and even works in one the usb ports in the keyboard (that is in my BW). Just select the iMic in the input and output panes of the Sound system preferences and there you go. Luis Sequeira -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: Lombard overheating?
Normally I hardly hear the fan on my 333mhz Lombard, but sometimes after using it for awhile on my lap or bed the fan suddenly gets louder and warm air is pushed out the left side. This has not yet happened while using it on a desk. At first I'd panic and shut down as soon as possible. When I grew tired of this I started keeping it on but moving it onto a desk. Normally the exhaust fan then stops after a few minutes. I suppose this is the computer's way of cooling itself when getting too hot? My question is, is this a normal thing I can ignore, or is it a warning to shut down for awhile? Thanks for any information. bill Having the same issue with my Wallstreet/250. I've also noticed since I have had this laptop, that at times with prolonged use on my bed or lap I'll start to get shadowing on the lcd.. For now I shut it down and let it cool. Depending on your needs I'd go all the way to Panther, being prepared there might be problems, and if so just start over. But the Crescendo cards work fine with OS X I think. You'd need to run XPostFacto, but IMHO it's great. I had a great experience with Panther on a WS II/PDQ with 382MB RAM a year ago or so. Panther use less memory more gracefully than both 10.1 and 10.2. The sole problem I had, was distorted sound input. another Lombard bites the dust (L2 cache is gone)
I hate replying to my own questions but I've figured out how to tell if the L2 cache in my Lombard is bad. Under apple system profiler my Lombard now reports no L2 cache Then there's the message that pops up during start up: The built in memory test has detected a problem with cache memory. Please contact a service technician for assistance. So I need to figure out what to do next. If the bad cache just slows the machine down I may just leave it as is, it's mostly used by my 9 year old for web surfing and e-mail. I could replace the processor but I'm concerned about the chance I'd end up with another flaky L2 cache. I could look for a processor upgrade but it looks like it might be cheaper to part out the Lombard and replace it with a Pismo. It's not like I need a 900 Mhz G3. There is another more radical option, my Dad is sending me a G4 cube that he has replaced with a G4 iBook. I've always like the aesthetics of the G3 powerbooks but the cube is every bit as good looking and has the added attraction of being free. Re: Lombard cd-rw?
Hi the Lombard is a lot easier to get an internal cdrw for, also if you are prepared to change the drive housing's yourself? it is cheap as-well!. about £40 - £70 on ebay. I used an external firewire drive that came with a G4 powerbook (i think it was a fire lite drive) The internals where matsushita i think. all you need is that the internals are the same size ( ie a 3.5 extermal cdrw is not going to fit in a drive bay for the lombard) but an external slim line or travel drive might. and the connecter on the end is the same. the fitting is very easy and someone on this list has a to do page on it ! own up who ever it is. vicki -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: Pismo wireless
Thanks Mark and other Bruce Will OSX be as slow as I fear, even with the bigger hard disk and more RAM? OSX on my Pismo with a 400MHz G3 and 512 RAM was fast. With the bluechip upgrade to 900MHz and 1 GB RAM it is even better, but even at 400MHz, it was fast enough. snip Actually 10.3 is about as fast on mine as OS 9. Not bad at all. The 128 megs is a big issue. Particularly if the disk is 5400 RPM, the Pismo should run OS X quite usably. The Pismo, in fact, feels roughly about the same speed as the Beige doing most things; it's got a PC100 bus which helps a fair bit. I think the current drive is a stock 4400 rpm. The current 128MB RAM is PC100. Not sure about the speed of the 30GB drive or the 512MB RAM which are on their way. Eventual plan is to max it out: see http://www.livejournal.com/users/myceliumme/29829.html#cutid2 Nope. 802.11g drivers are not available under OS 9. While the card itself is 802.11b compatible, that doesn't mean it uses Airport drivers. Oh well - and thanks for the explanation. I live less than 500 metres from my work. The buffalo card claims it may be able to achieve connectivity (albeit very slow) at this sort of distance. I'll post any positive results here and in LiveJournal I wonder what are you doing that's making the G4/400 feel slow? Happy to answer in detail off-list. Short answer is AFAIK nothing that **should** slow it (or what you're comparing it to Short answer The same G4/400 running OS 9·1, although I realise I may not be comparing exactly like-with-like.
