thermal transfer material in PBG4 ?

2005-03-16 Thread Mikael Byström
Anyone have suggestions what the thermal transfer material (1) used on
the CPU on Powerbook G4 logic board is? I have used cooling paste before
on the Powerbook G3s, but I suspect this is something else? The repair
manual indicates I should use new materials, so implicitly it's bad idea
to reuse the old material, if at all possible. Any ideas for obtaining
such materials except from Apple? I can get it from Apple, but still
would like to know of other sources.

Re: anyone familiar with this problem/recommend repairer city of Chicago?

2005-03-16 Thread MacKenzie, Kerry N.
Many thanks again Bruce Malcolm. Sounds like the cost may not be too
horrific?
That brings me to another Q before I hit the Internet/Yellow
Pages---might anyone happen to have a recommendation for a reasonably
priced G3/Wallstreet repairer within the city of Chicago (not the
suburbs--I don't have wheels), or failing that, a mail-in repair
company? (I did come across one on the net that sends you the box, picks
up and gives you an estimate for $79, but I didn't keep the name and now
can't find them again).
I have seriously thought about attempting it on my own, after looking at
the reassuring pbfixit site guides--it would save $$$, plus it's
tempting to test my skills or lack of them in a live-dangerously sort of
way. But knowing how inexperienced I am, common sense prevails--I
really need to get someone experienced to do it as time is of the
essence.
Thanks again! I really appreciate it! Kerry

The symptoms are the same, so I'm going to stick to the diagnosis
of a
bad cable or cable connection. Better than the alternative, which is
that the video ram is failing, in which case it's new logic board time
for you.

Me too, never seen a machine with bad VRAM that was variable.

Get it opened up and check the cables.

HTH
Mike

Thanks for your input, Mike. I took your information to heart and
bought a Belkin 802.11g card for my Dell Latitude. I really didn't
want a g-card, but that's all the local CompUSA had at the time and I
needed it right then to help my son trouble-shoot a problem on his
Windows network.

Anyway, I wonder if you would be kind enough to help me sort through
a few things with this Belkin/Dell setup? I know very little about
the Windows side of things. (Then why did I buy the Dell? Well, I
have one specific need that can't be done on a Mac, and that will
also require being able to download updates from the Internet. So I
want to share the Internet connection on my Airport wireless network.)

Unfortunately, I have a very limited network. I'm using the modem in
the ABS to connect to the Internet. It works fine for the Macs that I
have connected (albeit pretty slow). But, so far, I haven't been able
to get the Dell to get an wireless Internet connection on that
network. I wonder if that's due to my not having the Dell set up
properly.

I was able to connect to my son's wireless cable modem without any
difficulty, so that much is known to be working. The Dell utility
says it's connected to my Airport and the Dell icon at the bottom
right of the desktop turns green. The signal strength shows something
like 85%, so all is good there too. But I can't get MSIE to connect
to the Internet.

When I checked to Belkin settings, I saw that it was trying to use a
192.x.x.x IP address, whereas my network is using 10.0.1..x. So, with
a little help I went into winipcfg and manually changed the settings
there to 10.0.1.5 for the Dell, and changed the sub-net mask to the
right one. I didn't know what it was referring to when it listed
gateway (are they using that term for the router?) so I didn't put
any info there. And I didn't set any place to enter primary or
secondary DNS IPs. I can't help but wonder if one, or both of those
are what is preventing the Dell from using the Internet connection on
my network.

When I run winipcfg again, I don't get the same dialog windows to
fill-in or change, so I'm not sure how to enter the gateway or find a
place for the DNS IPs.

Any help you can provide would be **greatly** appreciated. I can't
ask these questions on a Mac list. The next best thing is a kindly
Mac user that's familiar with Windows. :-)

P.S. Just a reminder, I'm using Windows98 on the Dell.

Thanks in advance,

Bob

2005-03-16 Thread Bob
Arggh!! My last message was supposed to to go to Mike directly, not

Apologies to all.

Re: Different resolutions for different accounts?

Our user group has a projector that requires a lower resolution than
the native one of my 15 Powerbook. I's like to not have to change
the resolution back-and-forth manually.
I thought that this could be handled by using the Location Manager,
but that seems to be just for networking.
I think that the resolution is across all accounts. But you can have
the
display system-wide menu in the menu bar and you can then switch from
any
application.

-Laurent.

The resolution is not across all accounts. When you are logged into
your account, set your resolution using the Monitor Menu in the menu
bar, as I agree with Laurent that it is a good idea to have the monitor
menu available there. Log out of your account, and log into a
different account. Set the resolution for that account accordingly.
Whenever you log into an account, Mac OS X will remember which
resolution the account was set at. My grandmother, for example, has a
17 flat panel iMac. She has trouble seeing the screen. Her account
is set at 800x600. My account on her computer is set at 1280x1024, and
my brothers account on her computer is set at 1152x870, while my
grandpa, who can barely see anything, has his account set to 640x480.
I did notice, though, that the login window will stay at the resolution
for the account most used.

Hope this helps.

Classic won't start

2005-03-16 Thread Steve Jensen
I Folks,
I have an ailing Pismo. I upgraded to X.3.8 a few days ago and within two
days Classic would not start. I repaired permissions several times with
different apps. The Apple knowledgebase has been searched thoroughly and all
the fixes I could find were tried just short of a clean install, which I am
trying to avoid. I just get the warning You are running Classic without
superuser (root) privileges I can boot if I login under root or with an
OS9 boot disk. OSX is a little quirky, all the invisible files and folders
are visible! Any ideas?

tia,
The DSL modem doesn't enter in to it. You use the modem built into
the Pismo. Just tell it to print the document you want to fax and
hit the Fax... button should do it.

You don't need the DSL modem to send a fax. You use the internal modem of
your Pismo. When you select Print..., there should be a button at the
bottom of the printing dialog that will say Fax Make sure that your
contact is in the OS X Address Book and you should be good to go.

Yes, if the only available phone outlet is used by the DSL modem, you should
unplug it and plug a cable that goes to your Pismo's internal modem.
Usually, when you have DSL, the phone company should have provided you with
filters that you use when connecting regular phone-based devices, so you
might want to use one to plug the cable coming from the internal modem.

Gates's Law: The speed of software halves every 18 months. This oft-cited
law is an ironic comment on the tendency of software bloat to outpace the
every-18-month doubling in hardware capacity per dollar predicted by Moore's
Law. The reference is to Bill Gates; Microsoft is widely considered among
the worst if not the worst of the perpetrators of bloat.
