Ok but how about dismantling an early G4 1 gig 14 iBook?
Nothing at pbfixit for that machine.
I may need to replace a combo drive.
Looking for instructions AND a source for a raw drive to replace the
dead one.

Thanks.

adding RAM to iBook Clamshell

2005-03-19 Thread Andrea M. Stansbury
I wanted to add some RAM. I have a graphite iBook clamshell, no firewire. It
has 128MB of RAM on it now, what would it take to upgrade to say... 256 or
higher? And upgrading the harddrive? It comes with the standard 6gb hard
drive. Mostly it's the RAM. Are there any considerations for installing it
myself? Would I have to reinstall the mac OS? Thanks.

Yes, if the only available phone outlet is used by the DSL modem, you
should
unplug it and plug a cable that goes to your Pismo's internal modem.
Usually, when you have DSL, the phone company should have provided you
with
filters that you use when connecting regular phone-based devices, so
you
might want to use one to plug the cable coming from the internal modem.

Slow start-up problem

2005-03-19 Thread Rudi Reitberg
Hi,
When I start up my iBook it goes to the login screen and I enter my
login. My desktop pic pops-up and then it takes about five to ten
minutes of the spinning wheel before everything comes up. any
suggestions on how to speed this up? I update permissions every couple
of weeks, but haven't run any other disk utilities on my computer.

Shortly before I sold my tangerine iBook I installed a 512 MB stick of RAM
making it a very happy camper. When the iBooks came out the largest SODIMM
made was a 256 stick so that's the limit that Apple certified it as but as
many of us found, it happy accepted the 512 stick. When you upgrade the RAM
be very careful with the keyboard. It is pretty easy to jam the plastic
retainers at the top (where the function keys are).

The hard drive is something of a challenge. There are three thousand parts
to remove to get to the hard drive and two thousand nine hundred and ninety
eight to replace. Two screws inevitably remain when the job is done, I think
they procreate while you aren't paying attention. Actually only the first
and last sentence of this paragraph are true, all else is exaggeration for
humorous affect.

Google 'iBook hard drive upgrade' and you'll find a nice set of instructions
complete with photos of how to do the upgrade. I did one a week before that
website went active.

I'm not sure but I don't think that any fax you send are kept around. Since
they are based on a document you can open, I think they might assumed that
there was no need for keeping the fax around. I could be wrong, though,
because I think I only faxed once in Panther. You can also do a preview of
the fax before sending so you'll be able to see how the cover page look and
how the document will look.

Remember, the fax capabilities in OS X are more a convenience than a full
faxing software. If you think you're going to fax a lot of documents, you
might want to look into those kind of utility, like Page Sender and
faxSTF...

Looks like a HDI-30 to DB25 adapter for pre Pismo powerbooks.
I don't see the switch to enable SCSI dock mode but at $0.99 it's
still a deal.
No affiliation or experience with the vendor just stumbled across this
while procrastinating.
