Re: battery power on wifi, G3 clamshell
My Reply follows quote. On 08/04/2005 22:23 [EMAIL PROTECTED] said: Okay, I got the airport card for my clamshell, love it to death and enjoy being completely wire-free. However I noticed with the airport card, the battery life is seriously diminished. If I plan on using it without the power cord for any reason for a long time, I'll turn the screen brightness down and turn the sound off. that doesn't seem to make a huge difference, but it makes a little bit of one. It says it will work for like close to 2 hours. Does the battery need replacing or is this average for an older laptop? I noticed it gets down to a certain level with the battery displaying in red and then *boom* it shuts down and goes into sleep mode til I plug it back in. Any solutions or ideas? Should I just get a new battery? Andrea~ Sounds pretty normal to me. Two hours with wireless seems good. Better than I get with my Blueberry! A new battery may help, but I don't think you will get 3 hours from a new battery while wireless. Ken -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... WTB-Desperately Seeking Spare Bronze E Key Whole Pismo Keyboard
Constructing a Pismo for a friend--made the mistake of buying the main unit off EBay instead of here. Always a mistake...when will I learn? Pluck the 3 key, get a neverending e. Pluck e, get nothing. Closer inspection reveals the E had been futzed with--a klugey repair at best for a broken key. Pluck the E key off my Lombard board to test--break my Lombard E key due to 3AM incompetence. But tests did yield results: Pismo keyoard shot at the E and 3, no repair possible. So now I need a Psimo Keyboard ASAP as friend leaves for Thailand in days, AND I need to replace the broken E key for my poor sacrificial Lombard keyboard. On Apr 8, 2005, at 11:28 pm, Bruce Ryan [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I seem to have been a bit unlucky when buying a Pismo on eBay. I hope you don't mind the following shaggy dog story. Firstly the DVD drive died within hours of receipt of the wee beauty. I bought a replacement mechanism but I can't put it in the dead drive's housing because I can't undo two of the screws. However, I was given an intact 24X CD-R drive and so I can put the DVD drive into its housing. This seems a waste. DOes anyone think I can drill the stuck screw out without damaging the housing beyond use? I guess that would depend on your skill with a drill. :) You might also consider the old-screwdriver-and-a-bit-of-epoxy trick. Otherwise, I you might be looking at a new drive caddy. Next the power cable died. Replacement was easy and cheap, so I got as far as installing and configuring OSX, classic and other software. During a visit to England the power cables stopped delivering power to the Pismo. I was able to keep it charged using my mum's clamshell iBook cables. However, I then used it quite a lot, such that there was maybe 15 minutes left on the battery. Thinking that if the power cable was new then the fault must be in the yo-yo (the old one had had issues) I bought a brand-new one. By the time it arrived, I'd also received a bigger HD and so had installed that, following the Apple Service Manual's take-apart methods. I did have some trouble taking out the processor card because the wee plastic tag you have to pull on to extract this had torn before I received the Pismo. In the end, I used a pair of needle-nosed pliers to grasp the remnant of the tag and pull it up. Any thoughts on how I can diagnose the fault(s) or should I go to my nearest Apple Service provider? If you're not getting a startup chime, then the first thing I'd look at would be the processor card. A common problem with the Pismo is failure to reseat the processor card properly. It always seems to take more force than I think it should. I put a finger on the four corners of the card and press down firmly; and I still fail to seat it properly about half the time. :) I'd also inspect the processor card carefully for bent pins. The battery being dead should not, in itself, be an issue. The Pismo can start and run without a battery so long as it's getting power from the power adapter. Your ongoing problems with power cables seems a bit odd, however, and I wonder if it could be due to an intermittent problem with the AC-power board or maybe the PMU. Pismo battery gauge (jaguar)
All - I have been test driving a Pismo over the last day. I'm curious to find out just how stable the battery is . My 12 Al PB has a very linear / predictable usage rate. The Pismo is interesting, because it doesn't seem to decrease nearly as predictably - although, it has been on for a long time. It almost seems like it will actually increase from time to time. Re: battery power on wifi, G3 clamshell
Hi I have been using my new ibook for two weeks now and the battery only lasts for 3 hrs 50 with the airport card fitted and that is a new book. So 2hr + from a clamshell is good. I also have a 3400c with wifi via a mac wireless card, with the cd loaded and wireless being used for the net the best i get from that is 2hrs 30 mins and that is also a new battery, To save your battery life you need to set the book up to the way you like but only using the minimal power then the life should increase, for example the screen only at half brightness, the sound turned down to a minimum. Also if you have a book with removable drives then take the cd out and put in a space saver or a floppy drive. If the drive can not be removed leave the door open slightly the the system does not keep accessing the drive to check if there is anything there, keep the hdd spun down when doing text or not doing heavy access. turn off power to inactive devices IE pcmcia cards etc. all these need to be taken into account when you use the book, and if you do then you will find that you will always have enough power for the things that you need. vicki -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Ti 1ghz
The last model of Powerbook that was able to run OS9 not in classic-mode was the G4 Titanium 1ghz. Another way of saying this is that this is the last model that can boot from a version of OS9. I had assumed that because of this I could somehow install *only* OS9 on this machine. Maybe I'm wrong about this. Do I have to install both OS10 and 0S9 in order to be able to boot from OS9? And if both are installed is there some interaction between them even when OS9 is booted? Thanks for any clarification. WiFi list+another?r2
Thanks JP, From a quick look it looks like either the lynksys or the netgear will work if I use a different driver than Apple's airport, the resident software of 9.1. is that right? My other questions are this: 1] there a decent mac program which will do about the same thing as eBay's turbo lister? and... 2] Why or how can I get my OE emails to automatically open netscape when I click on the link in the body email. 3] And I can't seem to get my netscape mail to work for Sending, it receives, but asks for the pop mail addy and I give it the right answer (i think) but I don't know...I must not be holding my mouth just right. Eventually I will get all this tech worked out and I will just disappear...or think of new things to do to bother you guys. but as always I thank you Kristina In the wetlands of Indiana where the Spring Peepers are singing songs of frog love. -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... If this PowerBook can boot into OS 9, then you should not need to have OS X installed. You should be able to boot from an OS 9 installation CD, as long as the CD is the commercial version, not an installation CD that was bundled with another Mac. -Laurent. -- Laurent Daudelin AIM/iChat: LaurentDaudelinhttp://nemesys.dyndns.org Logiciels Nemesys Software mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] elder days n.: The heroic age of hackerdom (roughly, pre-1980); the era of the PDP-10, TECO, ITS, and the ARPANET. Repair or Replace PB?
Kind of in a quandary here, so I'm looking for additional input to help me make up my mind. A couple of weeks ago, my 15-inch AlBook (1.25Ghz) was damaged on a business trip (I won't get into the specifics of that, but I'm also looking to get a new case). It didn't appear at first that the damage was too severe -- dented bottom case -- but the HD started acting flaky and I had to reseat the AP card. I sent it in for repair to the Apple Service Center and the repair estimate came back -- between $1,200-1,500 (US) to fix. They actually sent it back to me with a laundry list of parts that need to be replaced -- seems like the whole laptop, less the logic board. This PB is about 14 months old. In January I just purchased AppleCare for it (which won't cover the repair repair in this case). I'm trying to decide if I should even worry about getting it fixed or just bite the bullet and get a new PB. The equivalent of my machine is now the 1.67 GHz 15-inch PB, with the SMS, new trackpad, etc. It's also $2,299... if memory serves, my PB was around $2,499 when I purchased it. I kind of hate the idea of sinking more than $4,000 into this computer when I can get the latest and greatest for less than $1,000 more than the repair bill. So... repair or replace? iBook 500 Questions
Hi All, I just bought a 12 iBook 500 from eBay... wanted something a little more contemporary than my trusty Wallstreet. I've done some google-ing and gotten a lot of information, but I have a couple of questions. 1. The 'book can accept an Airport card, but are there limitations on which cards can be used? 2. It has a 10GB hard drive which is... well, not big. I have a 40GB USB drive and want to know if the iBook can boot from that drive? 3. I'd like to run OS X on the machine and was wondering if the 500 MHz cpu would give acceptable performance? I don't do graphics stuff... just some word processing, spreadsheets and listen to an occasional music CD. Thanks for any input! Amanda -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Amanda, The only limitation on the AirPort card is that it uses the first generation Apple AirPort card. These cards are kind of in short supply and sometimes, you may end up paying more than the more recent and current AirPort Extreme card. As I understand it, you cannot boot a Mac from a USB drive. It has to be FireWire. You could probably find a FireWire enclosure for $25-$30 and transfer the drive from the USB enclosure into the FireWire one. If the drive is a 2.5 one, then you could also transfer the drive into your iBook. For basic stuff like you describe, OS X would work fine. I did run OS X on my old PowerBook Pismo at 500MHz before I upgraded to a PB 17 and OS X did run fine on it. -Laurent. -- Laurent Daudelin AIM/iChat: LaurentDaudelinhttp://nemesys.dyndns.org Logiciels Nemesys Software mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] flowchart n.: [techspeak] An archaic form of visual control-flow specification employing arrows and 'speech balloons' of various shapes.
