Re: is my iBook screwed

2005-04-14 Thread Malcolm Cornelius
 So the part that says:

The program is available for certain iBook G3 models (see below for
a complete list) with serial numbers in the following range:

   UV117XX to UV342XX

 Means what???

My understanding is that now, it means very little, except that maybe it'll
exclude boards that have already been replaced.

That range of serial numbers have gradually been increased as they have
added earlier and earlier models to the list of those cover by the REP.

Re: is my iBook screwed

2005-04-14 Thread Tim Collier
Goodness, it's quite clear. I saw the earlier post and checked my Serial
Number by clicking on the Aqua Apple Menu/About This Mac. When the little
box opens right under the Apple Logo and where it says Mac OS X beneath
that it says 'Version 10.3.8' click on THAT then it will say build number,
click again and it will give you your serial number. Mine is UV4466X (I
didn't give the entire serial number), so obviously it is not in the range
and the problem does not apply to mine. If you in the range below, then you
are covered.what could be simpler?

Except on the Belkin card, that might not have helped back at the time

Re: Should I consider buying a G4 Titanium.

2005-04-14 Thread Stuart Saunders
I think you are right David. I think I may have just discovered one
cause of hinge failure ;-( - possibly a major cause; getting cables
caught when you close the book. My previously tight hinged Pismo now
has 1/2 of play after catching a USB light cable.

I have a list of don'ts with books (particularly Pismos) that I wrote
some years ago. When I get Tiger lets see if Spotlight can find it and
I will add the above, and post it.

I've seen lots of broken hinges - I also know quite a few people who
own
TiBooks, have owned them for quite a few years, and have pristine
hinges. I
have no doubt that the design is flawed - but I also suspect that the
treatment of the computer plays a role.

AFAIK some Belkin cards have a Broacom chipset and work with built-in
drivers in Mac OS X (I have one of those :-), it came in a redish
box); some have a Ralink chipset and need drivers, available at the
Ralink web site ralinktech.com (these seem to be the ones in a grayish
box, but I am not sure), again for Mac OS X.

As far as Mac OS 9 is concerned, I do not know.
My Belkin card works great in a Wallstreet running 10.3.8 (installed
with XPostFacto).

European Powerbooks

2005-04-14 Thread Peter Saint James
Here's a question for those folks that skip back and forth across the
pond.

What are the electrical supply differences for European Powerbooks?
With current being different there, is the whole machine different, or
it just the powersupply different? Can one plug a European powersupply
into a US Powerbook and get it to work properly without damage?

It would be nice to simply get a different powersupply rather than
have to carry around a heavy transformer.

You don't even need a different power supply, just a
plug adapter for the different shaped plugs. All PB
adapters are multi-volt.

I use my PB in both the US (120v) and S. Korea (220v)
with no ill effects.

Hmmm. I thought that the SCSI connector was for connecting a hard drive

From http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=24474

The Apple Desktop Bus (ADB) connector is not used on this printer. The
25-pin connection allows serial communication with a DOS/Windows
computer; you can change communication rates and protocols via the Switch
Bank. The mini DIN-8 connector allows AppleTalk communication with Mac OS
compatible computers via LocalTalk connectors. The SCSI connector is used
for external hard drives to store downloaded font files; the SCSI
connector is not used for SCSI printing directly from a Macintosh. This
printer does not support simultaneous communications.

I've just checked the Ralink site and they have drivers for their
chipset, including a usb version... this seems to indicate that some
usb wifi adapters may work with this driver if they use the Ralink

Re: belkin card

2005-04-14 Thread Deaner Lawless
Anne,
I did the search today on both sites. I used keywords like Mac,
Macintosh, Apple, OSX, OS10, ect. None pointed to this card. I was only
able to find the OS info after searching for the model number. Are you
saying the chipset in the units on the shelves today aren't mac
compatible?

Interesting fact about the Comp site and the Belkin site is I

every spec for all the models you are interested.
Except on the Belkin card, that might not have helped back at the time
of the changeover - they changed their chipset before updating the
info on their site. Or, apparently, briefing their tech support
people, based on my memory of some posts here.

No, I'm talking about a year ago, when they changed from the Broadcom
chipset (OS 9 X compatible, airport drivers) to the Ralink chipset
(OS X Ralink drivers only), but didn't have that info available on the
web for a while.

I remember a post where someone on this list got one and it wouldn't
work with the airport drivers, but (if I remember correctly) the web
site or tech support insisted it should. By the time I got mine, I
don't know if Belkin had updated their site (though I did get mine
expecting it would work with the Airport drivers, based on old posts on
this list; I hadn't read the one I mention above yet), but people on
this list were able to point me to the correct drivers.

Hey, wait, their web site says now Mac OS® X v10.2.6 with AirPort®
installer 3.0.4, or Mac OS® X v10.3 - but I thought that Airport
requirement was for Broadcom - am I confused, or are they still putting
out old information, or have they changed chipsets again?

Re: European Powerbooks

2005-04-14 Thread Beniamino Cenci Goga
All PowerBook adaptors, since the 100 (but probably also for the
Portable) are rated for 100-240 Volts.

So it is only a matter of the shape of the plug!
I travel back and forth between Italy and California and most of my
'Books have actually been bought in the US!

Ben
 from Italy
Incidentally... here we have 240 volts.

Here's a question for those folks that skip back and forth across the pond.
What are the electrical supply differences for European
Powerbooks? With current being different there, is the whole
machine different, or it just the powersupply different? Can one
plug a European powersupply into a US Powerbook and get it to work
properly without damage?

Tiger on a clamshell

2005-04-14 Thread Matthew Faulds
There was mention of someone having seen Tiger on a Pismo - has any one seen
it running on a clamshell? We've got a 466.

I also note that the ATI Mobility Radeon 9200 in my G4 iBook isn't on the
Core Image capable graphics card list on the Apple site. The same card is in
the Mac Mini. Does anyone know if this means we'd get much poorer graphics
performance?

Disk Utility will let you customize the size, so just play with it

Just a thought.

Re: European Powerbooks

2005-04-14 Thread Claire Hart
My husband used to do a lot of international travel. He bought a
collection of power and telephone adaptors (probably 25 pieces), from
Targus, I think, that came in a zippered organizer about the size of a
5-Star (brand) zippered ring binder. The card inside listed in three
columns: each country, its power adaptor, and its phone adaptor, all
number-coded. None were any bigger than the box plug end of a blow
dryer power cord. Before a trip, he'd look that country up on the
little chart, pull out those adaptors, and tuck them into his laptop
case. A few required one adaptor to plug into a second adaptor, but
the chart made it simple.

Claire

Here's a question for those folks that skip back and forth across the
pond.
What are the electrical supply differences for European Powerbooks?
With current being different there, is the whole machine different, or
it just the powersupply different? Can one plug a European powersupply
into a US Powerbook and get it to work properly without damage?
It would be nice to simply get a different powersupply rather than
have to carry around a heavy transformer.

No transformer needed, just adapter plugs. You can get a world-wide adapter
kit at apple.com - or just buy an adapter in whatever country you land,
which is how I built up my collection. They're easy to find at any drug
store or hardware store in any country, even at the airport.

that will not work with the 4/600 because the printer is not serial, it

Apple's postscript level 2 lasers are compatible with OS X, including the

I have a similiar situation of connecting my Laserwriter II NTX...

An ethernet/localtalk bridge will put this printer on an ethernet

Sorry for the subject, but I have the feeling that I can give a
worthwhile contribution.

Before leaving your country go to an home appliance shop shop and buy
the following TWO things:

1_female plug for the male plug of the adaptor power cord
2_an electric wire
Put them together, so that you have at one end with the female plug
and at the other end the free wires (usually 3: the ground, usually
yellow and green, and the two phases)

Once you get to the destination country just buy a local male plug al
a local shop.

You are done!
No need to buy weird kits of doubtful quality!
