Re: Repair or Replace PB?
If possible get a second opinion, Apple Care can be a tad over zealous in their estimation on repairs, they do not want returns and cost is not a matter, nuke it. I had a pismo that they claimed the MB was dead yda yda yda- list, $1100.00 was their estimation. $5.00 used inverter on eBay and it still works fine. Swap hard drives, if yours is noisy. If you like to get in there and trouble shoot and have done a little bit of it, you may spend 30 minutes and find it can be fixed for far less then what Apple thought, use their repair list as check list. If you do not want to worry about it and need it now, get a new one and part yours out. Depends on what you want to do and your level of stomach acid. How do you use the book. If you have 500 people in a room looking at a Keynote presentation well-new. If you keep data, files etc. and can back up regularly. The book dies and you can live a few days with out it or have a back up book, I would try and fix it myself. But that's just me. Good luck Geoff On Apr 9, 2005, at 10:07 PM, P. H. Why? because they're used pretty much exclusively for trading songs, films and pirated software, usually on a large scale. (one person here on campus had a library of 12,000 MP3 files they were actively sharing. At one point that one workstation was using 90% of the bandwidth capacity for their entire center, several hundred people, with an equal number of computers. Given that the business of the center is cancer research, this was an entirely inappropriate use of bandwidth, and they were shut down. At the same time, 85% of all the traffic in the dorms was shown to be napster/grokster/kazaa/limewire related. At these levels it isn't just some nusiance, it's a significant detriment to network availability for legitimate use.) That's what these technologies, starting with napster, were intended for in the first place, that's what they've largely been used for, and that's what they continue to be used for. Yes they have legitimate uses, and mere possession of the software should not be viewed with suspicion, however, the preponderance of evidence shows that what people are sharing is largely music files, films and warez. Personally, I feel updating a Ti-400 isn't worth $2-300-. For Ebayers it should be noted that one have to replace the cables too in the Mercury that came without a burn capability. I assume those come with the untis PBfixit sells. The DVD-ROM in the VGA TiBooks is not a standard laptop drive, the cable is on the opposite side. Replacing it also requires a special bracket to fit into the computer. I know you get the bracket from Powerbook Resq, I picked one up last year. I now have a CW-8122 model combo drive in mine, the standard Apple drive is the CW-8121. Re: Power
I'm with Clark. What's in a name? EE profs have been wrong before, you know. Between the phases there is 220V single phase. From either phase to ground or neutral there is 110 V and these are opposite phases (180° apart) So they are both single phase and two phase. You can get a problem when the neutral develops resistance. A friend's fridge fried his computer once. Living near the sea, corrosion developed on the neutral. So the low impedance load (fridge) on one phase dropped all the voltage on the other phase on which was his computer (high impedance load). Re: Limewire
As I see it Limewire is only as shady as the individuals motivations for using it. Yes it can be used to download illegal music and the like but it can also be used for perfectly legitimate purposes, such as patch downloads for older software titles and the like and non copyrighted images. There is also the ability for creative users to share stuff they have created themselves etc. I personally find it the best of the bunch in terms of P2P clients. Wallstreet battery probs?
Hi, gang. New to the list - just picked up a Series II Wallstreet 266. It won't start up unless AC adapter's connected. It came with two BTI batteries but neither one shows any charge lights when installed, and there's no indication that they're charging. Red X through battery icon in menu bar, Battery Monitor CS module options greyed out. I've pulled the batteries and disconnected AC, gonna let it sit a while then check if it's still holding time; couldn't be as simple as needing new PRAM battery, could it?
