Re: Tiger appearance question

2005-05-02 Thread Harry Corsover
We may be viewing mail differently. I use the main browser, and keep
the upper-right window fairly small. In this view, the up or down
arrows (if the message subject is highlighted; if not, tab to get
there) go to the next or previous message (I keep messages sorted by
date in descending order). If you use threading, click on the thread,
and the right arrow takes you to the first unread message in the thread.

Apparently, this doesn't work if you open an email in its own window.

Harry Corsover

I think someone on this list suggested it a while back. My PowerBook

most-used keys. I thought some kind of protection for the screen
might be in order. Will this affect the hinges over a period of time?
It shouldn't do that, and this is a good idea for anyone with a modern
thin laptop.

A cheaper solution is to go to someplace like Pep Boys, Autozone or
Checker and buy a chamois cloth. They're pretty cheap, usually less
than $15, and have enough material for a half dozen protectors like
this.

Even a sheet of paper works.

RE - what to get first

Ram. Absolutely. Max it out, that's what I did and it's still quite
slow.

I have a G3 500Mhz, Dual-USB iBook (slow), a G4 14" iBook (faster) and a
20" G5 iMac (quite fast, indeed).

When I go back down to the iBook, I really get bugged having to wait, it
now seems to take forever for what takes only heartbeat on my G5.

Nonetheless, when I hit the road, I take the tiny, light (...and slowest
of the three) G3 iBook. It's a nice little computer and you'll be happy
with it.

Ciao,

The June Macaddict landed in my mailbox today, has a nice two page
spread called 'Field Guide to Optical Disks', an article on creating
Kid-Friendly Macs and an article on building both Pringles cantenna for
your Airport and a parabolic reflector for your 802.11 router with an
external antenna.

And I saw an ad in macWorld for "Make"...which looks like a modern
rendition of the old Byte Circuit Cellar, along with a seasoning of The
Amateur Scientist from Scientific american, and small Popular Mechanix
projects, with a wee bit (I hope ONLY a wee bit!) of Wired in for good
measure. Tinkerer heaven

 there's also an
article on doing aerial photography using a kite.

(and yes, I know about Circuit Cellar Ink, was a premiere subscriber,
now long lapsed, alas though I still have the articles on the
construction of the high-powered 2L water rocket project...this doesn't
look anywhere near as electronics geek geeky as CCI)

I wanted to upgrade it to the "unsupported" 1024 MB of Ram but opted
out for the 512 MB stick because of price. 1,200 CND for the laptop and
500 more for the RAM was t much.

At 640 the machine works very well with 10.3, At 256 it was O.K. but ...
Go with the RAM. I would wait for 10.4 to become popular and hear some
"real life" reviews of any potential speed increases before I slap down
170 CND for a copy.

Re: Power Supply

2005-05-02 Thread David Lesher

Is there a different power supply I can use with my iBook? The "flying
saucer" style works and is kinda cute, but a bit of a pain to travel with.
Is there a more conventional "brick" style I can use with Irving?
As in Berlin?
From Apple, there are UFO's and the white cubes with the elephant
ears. But I'm hearing reports from several people about those overheating

Several other companies make "universal" adapters that fit as well.
This includes "IGO" and Targus. Many are 120V/13v/15v for
home/auto/aircraft use.

I'd look to see if any offer long warranties...

effort when you can hit the spacebar or arrow keys to jump through
your e-mails. Maybe it's just me, though, since I've always been a
"keyboard-centric" kind of guy.
Your supposition would seem correct. I can see why one think that.
It seems like one would not have need for such buttons. When one has
them, however, they prove to be handy.

They were not my usual way of going through a list, but if I was doing
something with the mouse anyway, I could easily get the next message
without having to move my hand to keyboard.

For example, I might open a mailbox of stored messages looking for a
certain one. That's a mouse gesture. Then to go down the messages in
that mail box, using a button is easier for me than clicking on each
message.

Re: Ditching OS 9

2005-05-02 Thread Amanda Ward
Thanks for all the suggestions... somehow Irving didn't want to loose any
folder with "System" in its name. Refused to let me delete them.
So... I backed up the important stuff to the USB drive and reinstalled X
from scratch. Wasn't a total loss tho'... I got to nap between CD's!

The only reason I needed to keep 9 was to run m$ office 98, but I finally
got a copy of office v.x and all is goodness. (Yeah, I know... m$ stuff is
kinda lame, but at work I have to have it.)

Thanks again,

Amanda

Re: Tiger appearance question

2005-05-02 Thread Nima
I use the arrow keys for many things, except getting to a new mail
after having read another.
I have tried many key combination with the arrow keys (thinking
Entourage here) but none has worked. Do you know of a combination
that works?

A Quick Question...
I finally have all the software needed for OS X and want to delete OS
9/Classic from my iBook. Is there any easy way to do this or is a clean
install of X the way to go?
Reinstalling X is not a huge issue, but if I can save a few hours, it'd be
nice!
Thanks for any advice y'all might have!
Amanda
Drag the folder named "System Folder" (NOT the one called "System",
this contains Mac OS X!!!)
and the folder named "Applications (Mac OS 9)" (again, NOT the one
just called "Applications") to the trash and empty the trash.

That should about do it. You don't have to worry about preference
files, as Mac OS 9 apps store those in a folder inside the "System
Folder".

Do make sure you don't actually need it (or can easily install it
back) before you do this. You could, for instance, keep a backup of
the two folders on one or two CDs.

SpyMac has sucked since all the PC users signed up for it just to get
