Re: remove an icon in the menu bar

2005-06-21 Thread Luis Sequeira
I have an airport icon and an eject icon that I want to take out of
the menu bar. Can anyone point me in the right direction to do this?

TIA for your help.

James Sanderson

I am surprised no one answered this (I'm catching up on a few
digests, and figured there would be a bunch of replies...); the
answer is hold down the command key and drag the icon out of the
menu bar.

using external monitor with a pismo.

2005-06-21 Thread Pace

Can anyone tell me how to be able to use an
external monitor with my Pismo?
I hooked up a 19 to my Pismo it
was like an extension of my Pismo monitor.
So when I looked
under the monitor setup/controls it puts the
external monitor above or below my Pismo
monitor. Not what I want. I want to view
as if I'm looking at the Pismo.
Any help is appreciated!

If I understand what you'd like correctly, I think you want to check

Under 10.3.8 here. Go to sys prefs. Open Displays. Click on the
Arrangement tab. Check Mirror Displays in the lower left corner.

I have a Ti667 and it in the F7 key it has a little overlapping window type

also.

Close call. I'd say the QS as it has a faster hard drive, and
expansion room. Plus you can stick a dual-head video card in it and
run multiple monitors.

I'd second that. If you don't want to throw the $ for the tower,

Re: Synchronizing Treo 650

2005-06-21 Thread Sionnach Aisling
Harry, I've added my replies to the snippets of your
email below...

--- Harry Corsover [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

Is that different than the built-in Mail
 application? So far at
least, I have no plans to use the Treo for email. If
 I did, I'd have
to get a separate email address

The bundled mail application that Verizon puts on
the 650 - I couldn't get to work with the Mac at all.
It only wanted to sync with a PC. I tried setting it
up and fussed with it for about an hour when I finally
canned it in favor of Versamail. Nice of Verizon to
disable the Treo's ingrained Versamail functionality
so they could replace it with their own Mail software
that isn't mac compatible and then to remove the
Versamail installer from their recompiled CD but say
in the manual that you can install it from there...

As for the additional email address... no. Versamail
basically gives you a way to check your existing mail
(or any POP3 mail) from your Treo. (Handy if you
travel frequently.) I setup my wifes to recieve her
mail from our ISP, (She actually has multiple accounts
and Versamail allows her to check all of them.) but
leave the messages on the server. That way she can
still recieve and check them (respond if necessary)
but she still gets a copy of the email in the client
of her iBook when she gets home that she can save or
print if need be.

I guess I may come to you if I get to the point
 where I need the SMTP
server. Is the default email address
 [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Didn't think to try installing Versamail from Virtual
PC... not sure how that would work... good thought. I
know you can't get to the Versamail installer from teh
mac side, though...

I'd give you the Verizon SMTP if I could remember it
off the top of my head, but I can't and my wife isn't
here with her Treo. Basically, the user account info
you need to setup the SMTP address is your text
messaging user ID @ verizon.com. So, yes, by default,
your text message ID is your phone number, and I
believe that will work. (As the user id, but not the
actual SMTP Server name)But if you haven't visited
their website and setup a text id account, you may
want to. The SMTP address for your account won't work
unless it's a valid account and it takes about 24hours
for your account to become valid after you've
registered... You don't need this now, but if you
wanted to add Versamail capability...

Remeber though, you can't get email access to your
Treo without internet access for your Treo. Of
course, my wife has to have it all ;-) And I think
for her to have it all added an additional $50 a month
to our already incredibly high verizon wireless bill.
(Unlimited internet access) But hey, I've gotta keep
her happy!

Cheers,
Sionnach

The option doesn't appear unless the external monitor is plugged in.

If the monitor IS plugged in, click on 'Detect Displays' and it
should find it. Then you get the checkbox for mirroring.

You may have to set both screens to the same resolution, first.

Mac Mini- pros: new and under warranty, already has Tiger. Fast
processor. Cons: very slow internal hard drive, memory upgrade isn't
for the faint of heart, though not all that hard really, lots of
complaints from people using the VGA adapter and CRTs. LCD complaints
are minimal but a graphic designer may not want to use an LCD.

QuickSilver- pros: easily expandable memory, PCI cards, and drives,
newer models can handle 2 displays with the default video card, fast
hard drive. cons: owner responsible for repairs, G4 processor slower
than the Mac-Mini, may have to buy Panther or Tiger for an added
expense.

Having used both my take is this: If your friend intends to use a CRT
I'd take the QuickSilver hands down. If he'll be using an LCD I'd go
with the MacMini and an external firewire drive. The internal drive
is seriously that slow.

Finally, if your friend doesn't already have a monitor/LCD to plug in
and intends to use an LCD, I'd consider G5 iMac too.

Re: Decisions, decisions... PowerMac G4 or Mac Mini?

2005-06-21 Thread Laurent Daudelin
Folks,

This question could be better answered if asked on a more appropriate list,
like the G-List or the iMac List. I don't want to make a big deal out of it
but just want to remind everyone that this list is about Apple's laptops
using a G3 or a G4 processor.

Thank you all!

-Laurent.

OS 10.4, powerbook, roaming wireless not doing great

2005-06-21 Thread Brian McEwen

Hi all;

I hauled my new powerbook to a hospital last week as I'd be spending
a bit of time there; their public network was up, I got an IP, 2-3
bar signal strength, DNS etc resolved. all looked just great in the
network section of the about this mac menu.

Except, no DNS calls would work.

Everything worked fine on my wife's WinXP laptop, so I used that off
and on. Windows has really come a long way with XP

I'm going to be spending about a day a week down there for the next
few weeks and I really want my laptop online. Granted I was both
distracted and not feeling great, but I really saw no reason for DNS
not to be working.

Anything weird with 10.4 or Airport that anyone has seen or read
about? I'm going to try again tomorrow.

thanks,

Brian

ot noise canceling/isolating headsets

2005-06-21 Thread gladys pérez-almiroty

buenas noches:
i am in the market to buy a replacement to my trusty bose noise
canceling headsets. they are too bulky and i want to lighten the
load. i travel by airplane for work, so noise canceling/isolation is
a must.
i am looking at the sony mdr-nc11 fontopia, etymotic er-6i, sure e4c,
sure e3c and etymotic er-4 micro pro.

i am leaning for the etymotic er-6i.
just as a note: i am one of those that just cannot stand more than a
couple of minutes with the ipod headsets. the headsets of my new ipod
have never been out of the package.

any recommendations?
thanks!
gladys

WiFi

2005-06-21 Thread David Rodriguez

Hi list members,

Well I guess this is my maiden post on this list. Looking for some
guidance. I have a Lombard running Panther. Running with the bad L2
cache, but its not so bad as long as I remember to push the reset every
time 'before' I boot up. If not, then have to boot to cd, then to OS9,
then to Panther. And do it all with out restarting. Like I said, not
so bad. :)

Anyway, I'd like to be able to take advantage of the Wifi hot spots
when in town, so wondering what are the best cardbus brands to find for
Macs?

Thanks in advance,

Dave

Oh, it's the 1.5 GHz 12 OW 10.4 8X superdrive.

Thanks,

Try a different name server, such as 4.2.2.1 or 4.2.2.2, instead of
the one being supplied by DHCP.
