Then, assuming you have a regular FireWire cable, boot the one you want to
install Tiger on in FireWire target disk mode. Press 'T' right after
rebooting and hold "T" down until you see the the FireWire logo on the
screen.

Then, reboot your 900MHz, the one with the combo drive, and startup from the
Tiger installation DVD. Connect your 700MHz to the 900MHz using the FireWire
cable. When you get to the installer, the 700MHz hard disk should be there,
with the FireWire icon on it. Proceed with the installation by selecting
this drive. If possible, do a clean install or, at least, do an "Archive &
Install".

Once the installer has finished, reboot your 900MHz. Right after you hear
the startup sound, unplug the FireWire cable from both iBook.

Then, press the Power button on your 700MHz iBook. Once the iBook has
shutdown, press the power key again and it should boot from your Tiger
installation.

I did this on a slot load CD-ROM only iMacDV. Connect both iBooks to
one another with the firewire cable. Boot up the iBook with the CD-
ROM to a normal desktop. Next boot the put Tiger DVD in the combo
drive and boot that iBook with the "T" key held down. This will make
it appear as a set of external drives that should mount on your
desktop. Now select the Tiger DVD as the startup disk and you should
be set. Worked 100% on that iMacDV anyways.

I installed Tiger via my LaCie Porsche external firewire dvd drive.
Connect your external drive. Put the tiger dvd in. Let it load on
the desktop and then run the installer and it will reboot and start
from the dvd to install.

Gary -- you have a CD drive not a DVD drive, apple doesn't support a DVD

That's more or less like asking if a cassette drive could 'read' an

This means that there are two possibilities. 1) The person does
not know all of the ins and outs of iCal and so it seems like a
hassle to them. (A real possibility since--as with much about Mac--
many controls are not obvious; one has to play with it for a while to
find them.) 2) They want attention.

In either case, the thing to do is to sit down with them; ask
them to tell you exactly what they need in a calendar program and
what it is about iCal that falls short; tell them sincerely things
like "I trust your judgement on this," and "I want to make sure this
works for you"; and give them your complete attention for an hour or
so. You'll get the cooperation you need and gain a powerful ally.

mac os web template?

2005-07-26 Thread Mike
Are there any free templates out there with a Mac OS look, either classic or
X? Or maybe just graphics themselves? I really don't need the template just
the graphics that come with them :) Thanks

Want to trade Mac for iBook/Powerbook

2005-07-26 Thread Mike
I posted this to the swap list also but trying to gauge interest.

I would like to trade the following Blue n White G3 for a working OSX
capable iBook or Powerbook. I'll consider all offers for trade, but I am not
interested in money right now. I would like to get at least a 400MHz G3 with
256MB's of RAM, but that is negotiable. More RAM over CPU or vice versa.
Most important to me is CPU. I will even consider a notebook with no RAM if
the CPU is good. I will also consider stripped but working notebooks with
just the CPU and CD-ROM drive. Battery life would be nice, but not
necessary. WiFi is not important nor is the OS or hard drive size.

I have:
Blue n White G3
G3 500MHz
384MB RAM (1 128MB and 1 256MB)
120GB Maxtor ATA133 HD
Original Rage 128 PCI graphics card
Liteon CDRW 52x24x52 (boots and burns fine) Zip 100
2 firewire
2 USB
No modem
10/100 NIC

I will also include a "maybe" working G4 400MHz + Sawtooth mobo. It should
work in this Mac but I was unable to get it working.

I can load OS 10.2.8 and also OS 9.2.2 if needed. I have an original OS
9.0.4 restore CD and also original OS 10.2 CD's but these will be negotiated
depending on the notebook specs.

I have absolutely no problem with this machine. I originally traded a dual
P3 PC for it locally and have had it for 4 months. The Mac sits now because
I'd rather use a notebook. I love to write and love to write on Macs and
have been using my Wallstreet more now and before that my PC notebook lol.
So the PowerMac has been mainly an mp3 server.

Case is in decent shape with a few scratches and the hinge to open the side
is a little stiff but works.

Pics can be provided also!

Again this is all negotiable. I just want an OSX capable notebook. I also
have a good AMD based custom PC (very nice looking) if someone is interested
in that. I can provide specs.

Thanks everyone!

Upgrade Orinoco OEM card, Was Re: Pismo wireless questions

2005-07-26 Thread Kenneth Vann
Would it be possible to use the Airport Base Station to up upgrade a OEM
version (Dell, Sony, IBM, ect) of the Orinoco Silver Card?

I am assuming that one would need a Snow Base Station. Perhaps using a
Graphite would upgrade an OEM card to one that is listed as a Silver card.

The Orinoco software will list the card as a Gold/Silver or third party.

Any info or links would be helpful. I have both a Graphite and Snow I can use.

Thanks

Ken Vann

Re: Pismo PowerBook display failing

2005-07-26 Thread Francesco sciacca
Andrew,

I've found the information you have provided (quoted below) invaluable. My
problem is the light bulb replacement for a Lombard and I take it the
disassembling guides you point to will still be valid (with minor
differences). I wonder though about the specific bulb. I know the Lombard
and Pismo displays are not interchangable, but I well suppose the bulb at
least should be the same part. But I'd like to get a definitive word on that
from some knowledge source.

cheers,
gianfranco

I know the department sec'y didn't "like" ical. And you may know who
has the real power in a department... :)

Thanks for the reply.

VPN-Encryption....

2005-07-26 Thread Thomas Sappl
Hello folks,
I have to write a small documentation about creating a DSL-VPN-connection
using OS X for my ISP-company and it this very point I have some questions
(I hope you can help me on this list);

Well, our VPN-connection isn't encrypted and I discovered, that my Tiger
10.4.2 does have an option in the VPN-settings (in the Internet
Connection.app) allowing me to switch on and off encryption (automatic,
maximum and off) But several customers (using Panther, mostly without
any updates, logged in as Administrator, but also as root) told me they
don't have this options... Well, as I only have Tiger available, maybe some
of you can tell me, if (and of course, why) their Panther installation
doesn't have this option for VPN-encryption and if there is a very easy way
(the customers are new to Macs and I have to support them through phone
line) to switch this encryption off? (yes, they may can edit plist-files
with defauts, but I won't bother them with the Terminal).

Any help will be welcome,
Greetings from the mountains
Thomas

Claire... thanks for the update. I'm glad to hear you gave VPC a shot and
that it has worked well for you so far. Your experience mirrors my own.

Continued good luck, and success,
