great (IMO) vendor for UPS replacement batteries

2005-08-20 Thread Brian McEwen

I'm happy with these guys:

http://www.batterysupplyco.com/

I have 3, originally mid-range APC UPS surge protectors. They are
getting old, on one the battery is dead, the others are getting there
(maybe 5 or 6 yrs old at this time).

Anyway I was going to just buy new ones rather than replace
batteries, and got hit with sticker shock at the prices of not-even-
comparable units at the chain stores (and these are heavy, shipping
is a big pill to swallow for internet purchases).

Anyway the above URL has nice battery replacements, free shipping,
and great customer service- one battery was the wrong kind, I made a
mistake/was mislead by their website perhaps, and they are shipping
the right battery plus covering shipping of the wrong one back to
them. Pretty decent.

Hope this helps someone who is trying to decide what to do with their
aging UPS.

I've been replacing my APC batteries for awhile now and this time
around (my UPS died 2 weeks ago) I ended up buying an APC brand
replacement from buy.com. It was a few bucks cheaper than almost any
no name generic replacement and the APC replacement contains a free
packing and shipping sticker for a UPS return of the old battery to
be recycled. This to me adds in another 5 or 6 bucks to the value of
the APC brand replacement over the generic you can get from companies
like the one above.

I've dealt with them and had the same problem. I entered my model UPS
and they sent me the wrong battery. They were quite good about
returning the wrong one and getting me the correct battery, but it
took almost 3 weeks from when my UPS first beeped until I had a new
battery inside.

Re: Lombard problem

2005-08-20 Thread Lisa Tom P

I did remove the PRAM battery and the processor in an earlier attempt

 with no results.

I just tried removing the power board and the machine refused to do
 anything.

Since the logic board swap failed, I feel that leaves me with one of
two choices: The sound board or the power board. Which would be the
 most likely suspect?

Well the machine won't run with out the power or sound board, I was
suggesting swapping for a known good one.

The machine is powering up (green light and fan running), so its
probably not the sound/AC board.

Bad Sound board on a Wallstreet can cause that symptom.

help needed: extensions, open transport, etc.

2005-08-20 Thread david

i need some help here...

i installed LaserWriter software (apple laserwriter driver 8.6.1) to run
my laserwriter 320. after the installation i've run into several problems:

1 - the extension shared library manager ppc has gone funky and i've had
to disable it

2 - i no longer have open transport utility lib operational, it will not
start up

3 - various related problems to the disfunctionality of open
transport include being unable to use web servers and email applications,
the system finder, quicktime streaming extras, and other things like the
extensions manager no longer shows up, etc.

4 - when i opened internet explorer it opened as if it was a new instal,
but it failed anyway because of the ot issue

4 - i also notice that the chooser hasn't displayed lw 8.6.1 after the
installation, though 8 and 8.3.4 do (they were there before)

basically it feels like i've disabled my computer!

i'm running 9.1 on a 3400. any help would be *greatly* appreciated!

not set to automatic, on those rare occasions when I'm actually out
and

about with my Pismo, I have to remember to set it back to automatic
just to join a hot spot. Anyone know why this is? Should I delete my
network altogether and just create a new one? Here's the specs:

Pismo 500/1gigRAM/Airport card w/ Airport Base Station (snow). All
software is up to date, with exception of Tiger. I'm currently using
Panther 10.3.9.

Thanks for any input on this matter,

Zoltan,

This has just happened to me in the last week. Now when I come home
and open up my Pismo I have to click on the airport icon in the menu
and select my network. Used to do that automatically. Also it no
longer asks if I want to connect to any open network it finds
elsewhere.

I have a Pismo 400/768/40G/Airport card with a Belkin wireless router.
Using 10.3.9.

Don't know if it is related or not but it takes a lot longer lately to
load any Safari pages. I checked my DSL speed on one of those free
sites and it has not changed. Just got a new (to me) iMac G3
400Mhz/640/10G/Airport and it seems to be much more snappier.

Any programs that would cause this? Airport card gone bad? Trying to
think of the changes I have made... Anybody else out there notice
this?

Thanks,

Dan,

Now see this is getting interesting. I hope we didn't stumble on some
kind of bug in Panther. I'm wondering if this is just a Panther thing,
or if it is something that would go away with Tiger. Keep me posted if
you discover a fix. I'll do the same.

If your machine can handle it, I would try to upgrade the operating
system to 9.9.2. That may solve your problem. If not, then I would
reinstall the system you have on there (or do a install in place -
think thing that option is there. I'm not sure, it's been a while since
I messed with classic.)

- if i do a clean install, will that wipe all my files, preferences etc.

Re: extension problem: shared library manager ppc

2005-08-20 Thread John McGibney
Clean install saves the old system folder and installs a new system
folder. Once you restart you can drag your old preferences etc into
the new system folder. You can try copying the extension from another
machine it should/might work.

By the way some of your older apps like Explorer might have to be
upgraded, especially the ones that insist on the opentransportlib
file. Sorry if its not the right name, its been a while since I
played with 9.

i just tried copying the extension from a 9.2.2 system and although both
extensions are identical in every way *except for the system they came
from* (same version, creation date, etc.) it did not solve the problem,
still getting the bomb error message when starting unless i disable that
extension. grr.

When I transfer stuff from the Previous System Folder (what Clean
Install renames your old System Folder to) to the new System Folder I
save anything that gets replaced, just incase the old file is corrupt.

The other alternative is to use TomeViewer to extract just the SLMPPC

What is likely happening is that the extension is fine but some
shared library that is getting loaded at boot is corrupt. This is a
classic extension conflict problem.

Try leaving the extension enabled and disable all the Shared
Libraries. Create a folder in the Extensions folder called Shared
Library (disabled) or such. Then reboot and see if you still have
the problem. If it goes away then start trying the shared libraries
either one by one or using a successive approximation - try half, if
it boots okay try half the remaining, if it doesn't boot then boot
half of the test lot back in the disabled folder.

thanks clark. it seems now that the issue is a conflict with the open

Hard Drive Replacement

2005-08-20 Thread bobgir2004
I just loaded Tiger onto my G3 Dual-USB iBook with the 9.24GB capacity
HD and I realize I barely have breathing room left.

Two questions:

1. Can a reasonably handy person (rebuilt the carburetor for my 1965
Mustang once) replace the HD in this model iBook?

2. Can anyone recommend a HD?

I went to http://www.pbparts.com/shop/ and found an 80 GB Hard Drive
(Toshiba 5400RPM): This Toshiba 80GB 5400RPM drive has a huge 16MB buffer,
improved noise reduction, and low power consumption. Here is a link to specs
for the 8026GAX. This drive has a three year warranty from Toshiba Note:
This drive is compatible with all G3 and G4 laptops. 8026GAX.

At the same site, also found: This is a Hitachi Travelstar 7K60 60GB
7200RPM 2.5in ATA-6 Mobile Hard Drive w/8MB Buffer. Here is the spec PDF for
the Hitachi Travelstar 7K60. This drive is equiped with a large 8MB Data
Buffer and a 7200 RPM Spindle Speed for increased performance. Note: This
drive is compatible with all G3 and G4 laptops.

Would I see a noticeable difference in the 7200 vice the 5400 RPM drive?
This thing is already running very slow when compared to my G5 iMac.

The iBook now has an IBM-DJSA-210 HD, according to System Profiler, and
when I looked it up online, I found that it runs at 4200RPM. So, 5400 would
be an improvement; 7200 would be a vast improvement, no??

Suggestions gratefully accepted and many thanks.

bob

Re: Hard Drive Replacement

2005-08-20 Thread tdunn1

Try this site:

http://www.pbfixit.com/Guide/

They have good guides on taking apart powerbooks/ibooks and it will
give you a good idea what is in store for you.

Just out of curiosity, how much room did 10.4 take up? I know 10.3 take
up 2 gigs and I can't imagine 10.4 taking up much more room.

I just loaded Tiger onto my G3 Dual-USB iBook with the 9.24GB

HD and I realize I barely have breathing room left.

Two questions:

1. Can a reasonably handy person (rebuilt the carburetor for my
1965

Mustang once) replace the HD in this model iBook?

2. Can anyone recommend a HD?

I went to http://www.pbparts.com/shop/ and found an 80 GB Hard
Drive
(Toshiba 5400RPM): This Toshiba 80GB 5400RPM drive has a huge 16MB
buffer,
improved noise reduction, and low power consumption. Here is a link to
specs
for the 8026GAX. This drive has a three year warranty from Toshiba
Note:

This drive is compatible with all G3 and G4 laptops. 8026GAX.

At the same site, also found: This is a Hitachi Travelstar 7K60
60GB
7200RPM 2.5in ATA-6 Mobile Hard Drive w/8MB Buffer. Here is the spec
PDF for
the Hitachi Travelstar 7K60. This drive is equiped with a large 8MB
Data
Buffer and a 7200 RPM Spindle Speed for increased performance. Note:
This

drive is compatible with all G3 and G4 laptops.

Would I see a noticeable difference in the 7200 vice the 5400 RPM
drive?

This thing is already running very slow when compared to my G5 iMac.

The iBook now has an IBM-DJSA-210 HD, according to System
Profiler, and
when I looked it up online, I found that it runs at 4200RPM. So, 5400
would

be an improvement; 7200 would be a vast improvement, no??

Suggestions gratefully accepted and many thanks.

Re: extension problem: shared library manager ppc

Same as before, replace it using TomeViewer. Note that it loads
additional files so it may well be a problem with one of those. Also
it could be the configuration file that's buggy.

when starting unless i disable that extension. grr.

What is likely happening is that the extension is fine but some
shared library that is getting loaded at boot is corrupt. This is
a classic extension conflict problem.

Try leaving the extension enabled and disable all the Shared
Libraries. Create a folder in the Extensions folder called Shared
Library (disabled) or such. Then reboot and see if you still have
the problem. If it goes away then start trying the shared
libraries either one by one or using a successive approximation -
try half, if it boots okay try half the remaining, if it doesn't
boot then boot half of the test lot back in the disabled folder.

Never worked on a Mustang (horse, plane nor car). But I have rebuilt
a '69 Toyota's carburetor and replaced an iBook's HD. The
carburetor is easier.

The key is to get a good set of take apart instructions for the iBook
then tape every screw as you remove it to the instructions in the
appropriate location.

When I did it I lined up all the screws in a row but as I was putting
it back together there was one screw I just couldn't find a place to
put back. There were about 65 screws.

They both sound good. I'm not sure if the ATA-6 is okay or not,
there is a problem with some version of ATA but I don't know what it
is.

I have used a Travelstar inthe past on a Wallstreet.
