Re: what's a good lap top cooler and question about Memorex travel drive

2005-09-05 Thread Howard Katz
Targus makes a non-powered stand that has channels to go underneath
the 'book to facilitate airflow, can be set to several angles, and
folds to a very thin size. I was going to get the Macally icestand,
but then saw this unit. It's about half the depth of the icestand.
(looking at the Targus unit here--I can't see a product name or
number, but it's usually found with the other notebook
accessories--$29.95 at OfficeMax. Best Buy had it at $33. Grey
plastic, rounded end, rubber non-slip pads and channels for airflow.
You'll know it when you see it. :) )

Clearlight brand 2.5 HDD firewire external plastic case

2005-09-05 Thread kaldav

Hello,
Has anyone used a Clearlight brand 2.5 HDD Series firewire external
plastic drive case? (model IMPT 2500FRHIDE 1394/Firewire).
I can't get the drive to be recognised in OSX or OS9 on a Pismo or a
900 mhz ibook G3. There is a driver for use with 9, but that hasn't
worked and in OSX it doesn't show up at all.

Any suggestions to get this recognised, or did I buy the wrong plastic casing?

I Finally Decided

2005-09-05 Thread David Harris

Hi:

I apologize for the length of this E-mail.

I was on the fence for a while with my 700 Mhz G3 iBook. It had a
broken R-11 unit (where the telephone jack locks in), which I let
happen through negligence (I left it on the bed plugged into the
telephone jack and my other half walked by and pulled it out. The
R-11 jack still worked but I had to be careful the telephone cable
didn't slip out. I had Airport card in it, so I did not need to fix it.

This situation gnawed at me. I wasn't even sure that repair on the
R-11 jack was possible. I heard it was part of the logic board and
would require a complete replacement. Finally, fate helped me
decide. I sold my Dell laptop with USB CD-R/DVD-ROM for financial
reasons. I called a local Apple consultant and after one day's
research, he indicated that the R-11 jack was indeed separate from
the logic board and would run an estimate for repairs. But why stop
there, I thought. The iBook had a CD-ROM drive. The hassle I would
have to install Tiger made me decide to get a combo drive. Along
with a complete servicing and changing of worn screws and completely
replaced plastic feet (I purchased this iBook used through a company
I cannot find, BuyMicro.com), the final bill was $530.35. I have a
90-day warranty for parts and labor.

Whew More expensive then a Mac Mini, I know, but it is kind of
strange. I'm glad I repaired the 700 Mhz G3 iBook. It lets me be
able to put Tiger on her and sell my 900 Mhz G3 iBook with a combo
drive that I hardly use, as it is slightly heavier.

I'm confused: you spent over $500 to upgrade a 700 MHz G3 iBook with
a Combo drive and you already had 900MHz G3 iBook that had a Combo
drive? The money must have really been burning a hole in your pocket!

I checked the specifications sheet for the 900MHz and 700MHz iBooks:
the weights are the same for both the 12 14 models. So what I
surmise you have are a 12 700MHz at 4.9 pounds, and a 14 900 MHz at
5.9 pounds. You kept the 12 and are selling the 14, correct?

Re: what's a good lap top cooler

2005-09-05 Thread Carl Freire
I'd like an actual answer to the question originally asked rather
than advice about other types of laptop coolers. Is there anybody on
this list who IS actually using a Targus ChillHub? What is your
experience with it? Does it work well with your PowerBook or iBook?
Of particular interest to me is, how noisy are the fans? I use a
Pismo with a G4 upgrade, which I love everything about except for the
fact that the CPU tends to run a little hot and kicks in the internal
fan. I already use a Targus CoolPad, which helps, but I'm curious
about the ChillHub SPECIFICALLY as an alternative.

Me, I could care less about it drawing power from the laptop--the
current model of the ChillHub comes with an AC adapter of its own and
I rarely run off my PowerBook battery anyway, except to occasionally
condition the battery. Still, for those people interested in using
this PARTICULAR accessory, reports of your experience with battery
efficiency would no doubt be welcome.

External drive usage

2005-09-05 Thread Howard Katz
Ok, I'm stumped. I'm still trying to get this external USB drive I
bought usable for doing backups from my PB.

I can only get it to format as an MS-DOS drive--Mac formats (all of
them) under Disk Utility fail. Trying to set it up as a unix format
fails. And Disk 1st Aid doesn't like the reformatting. I'm a bit
hesitant to use it under MS-DOS format for backup purposes

Any suggestions? Help? I'd even be willing to ship this to someone
and pay them a nominal amt. to get this puppy running so I can use it
for what I bought it for.

Re: Powerbook G3 for sale...

You might want to consider eBay for selling this powerbook. You can
certainly offer a starting bid of $300.00 (with all the extras you're
offering, it's certainly a fair price). I'm sure you'll get what you aiming
for (at least) with a 7 day auction. Good luck.

Help! iCal died!

2005-09-05 Thread Anne Judge
I opened iCal tonight and it said it would be reset from .mac. I
didn't want that (and didn't know why it would want to do so), so I
canceled out of it. I reopened it, and had (approximately?) 2x the
number of calendars I should - and it died. I reopened, and I had
(approximately?) 3x the number of calendars - and it died. The
calendars had no names.

After a little more of this, I realized I wasn't getting anywhere, so
I started deleting files. I wasn't getting anywhere, so I deleted
everything with that showed up on a search on ical, and all
the .ics files, and restored iCal using Pacifist. I opened it, and
the same thing happened - it died immediately, and on the 2nd opening
had gobs of blank calendars (no 2x here, it went straight from home
and work to gobs).

I searched on ics after going through the above (ical delete,
reinstall, open) twice, and find I have 156 corestorage.ics files,
whatever those are.

If restoring from the install disk doesn't work, I don't know what to
do. My backup still has my Panther configuration, as I just did the
Tiger install 2 weeks ago and wanted to be positive I hadn't lost
anything before overwriting it. Took me 3 days to get my computer
back to where it is, cleaning up after migration assistant updating
applications, and I don't want to have to do the whole install
update over again!

Any ideas??

Anne
