Hi, I am having an issue with my 600mhz iBook G3.

I week ago I installed OSX.1 on it, and had no problems with it.

ibook. All of a sudden, the startup process was s-l-o-w-e-r than I
ever

remember; the little cartwheel would spin for what seemed like ages...

Finally, after about 10-15 minutes, all that appeared was (in the
upper right
hand corner) the time/date display, the battery level and a little
wireless
indicator; no desktop icons, no desktop background. Choosing any of
the
mentioned items had no reponse. All I could do was to press the
start button to shut

the machine down.

Removed the Airport card, and the same thing occurred. long startup

in just the three icons in the upper right hand corner.

What did I do wrong? I know the Airport card works, as I am using
it right
now in a clamshell. And the machine started up perfectly several

recommendations for 3400?

2005-10-30 Thread Andrew in Ann Arbor

Not really a G-book but close.
My sister has just come across a 200 Mhz 3400 with 80 Mb RAM and a 2
Gb hard drive.
She wants to do word processing, e-mail (with wireless card), light
web browsing and music downloading.
I suggested that music downloading wouldn't make sense with such a
small hard drive but that the other tasks should be possible.
I have a YDI diamond 802.11b card that works in a wallstreet or Lombard
with the stock Apple Airport extensions. Not sure if it will work with
the airport extensions in OS 8.6.

Questions:
Which OS, I'm thinking 8.6 or 9.1
Which browser?
Which e-mail client?

Thanks

Might as well go 9.1 for compatibility with some later browsers
(IIRC). For browsers, Netscape 4.78 would be the fastest, but least
compatible. Opera 6.03 is a compromise (but it isnt fast), and
Mozilla builds are the most compat. but the slowest.

Eudora Light is free and fast and easy.

It should; if you can find the original software -- online or on a disc --
see if a Mac version is offered.

If not, find out the chipset of the card. Most (if not all) 802.11b cards
that can be used by Airport are Orinoco chipset cards, so some maker's orinoco

9.1 has more features but 8.6 is a lot more stable. At least it was for
me -- the constant crashes during the brief period I used OS 9 were a
major incentive to move up to X.

Which browser?

iCab -- it's fast and nimble. But keep a copy of Explorer around just
in case.

Which e-mail client?

Outlook Express -- loads of features, including the capacity to manage
multiple accounts, no annoying advertising as in Eudora, and FREE.

Best,

Re: How to transfer from Lombard to G4 tower

Dave
With the proper cable you can connect the Lombard to the SCSI port on
the tower and have the Lombard appear on the G4 desktop as an external
hard drive.

It's called SCSI disk mode and requires a specific cable.
It works just like firewire disk mode on later powerbooks.
The correct cable plugs into the HDI-30 (SCSI peculiar to Powerbooks)
port on the powerbook and the SCSI card on the G4.
Turn the Lombard on first, it should start up with a SCSI icon on the
screen.
Then start the G4, the Lombard should appear on the desktop as a hard
drive.

Drag and drop.

I wish there was a USB target mode for my Lombard.
I may need to get a Pismo.

Yes 8.6 much more stable than 9.??

Because of the cage, you need to use an older PCMCIA card. Although the bus
itself is 32 bit compliant, the cage is not. So some persuasion may be
necessary for some cards.

Most cards come with their own extensions.

OS 9.2.2 in PowerPCs don't have a problem on this network with the Pismo.

What would be the best forum/resource for figuring this out?

Re: RAM swap from Lombard to Pismo

2005-10-30 Thread PeterH5322

I'm contemplating trading up from a Lombard to a Pismo and would like
to know if I could swap the RAM from my Lombard into a Pismo.

Lombard to Pismo is OK as long as the SODIMM RAM is PC100 or better.

Pismo to Lombard is often not OK as the same problems with the RAM
controller in the Wallstreets are present in the Lombard.

Wallstreet and Lombard are VERY selective about which 256 MB sticks they
will accept, and most will only be read as half capacity (i.e., 128 MB).
Especially true of the later, faster low profile 256 MB SODIMMs.

Pismo will accept just about any generic SODIMM, even 512 MB sticks, up
to a max of 1 GB.
