Re: Pismo and newer drives
People have written that some newer drives (ATA6) are not compatible with the Pismo. What is the symptom of these drives when they don't negotiatid to ATA5? No devices on the ATA bus will work ... at all! You cannot boot from the CD/DVD, even if that CD/DVD contains a system installer, or even an emergency boot volume. Sure, the devices will appear to power on and become selected, but they will not read or write data. Once the offending hard drive is removed, the ATA bus will again work. Even if the new hard drive is already initialized on, say, a Beige G3 or a BW G3 (using the appropriate adapter to a 40-pin cable) or even another PowerBook, say, a Wallstreet, which DOES support the new hard drive, it will not work on a Lombard or Pismo because the ATA chipsets in these models cannot auto-negotiate properly. The fault is partly in the drive, but also partly in the 'book. But, as these suspect drives will work in desktops, and also in Wallstreets, one would have to conclude that the fault lies more with the Lombard and Pismo 'books, and less with the suspect drives. The older Hitachi/IBMs ... most particularly the high-capacity 5K80 series ... are known to work with Lombard and Pismo 'books. The older Toshibas are also known to work with Lombard and Pismo 'books. The current Samsung, Hitachi/IBM and Toshiba high-capacity drives are known not to work with Lombard and Pismo 'books. Generally, older drives of 10 GB and below are OK, but later drives of 20 GB and above, other than those specifically mentioned herein earlier, must be evaluated for Lombard and Pismo compatibility on a case-by-case basis. OWC's web site specifically identifies those Toshiba and Hitachi/IBM drives which will and will not work with Lombard and Pismo 'books [ * ]. OWC doesn't sell Samsung drives at all, and one wouldn't expect it to comment on drives which it doesn't sell. OWC's reference is not specific to the Lombard and Pismo 'books, that reference being to certain PowerBook models, but personal experience has shown that OWC's statement is correct as to the Lombard and Pismo 'books, but incorrect as to Wallstreet 'books. I cannot comment on later 'books as I don't own any past the Pismo. [ * ] OWC has recently updated its web site to delete references to those drives which will not work on Lombard and Pismo 'books. Before, it listed by model number those drives known not to work, among those drives which it sells, and stated that the other drives which is sells were known to work. -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: Pismo and newer drives
I have a 400 MHz Pismo (576 MB RAM - OS 10.4.3) and replaced the original 6 GB with a Travelstar 40 GB, ATA6 back in July of this year. Bought from OWC. No issues to date, runs quiet and fast. The original drive was fairly noisy and died the day the new drive arrived - talk about timing! Re: Pismo and newer drives
I just bought a Seagate Momentus 40 gig 5400 RPM/8 MB cache from Macgurus and it works fine on my Lombard. Good to know. So far, late Hitachi/IBMs, late Toshibas, and all Samsungs are known not to work with Lombards and Pismos, even if these very drives will work in PBs earlier than Lombards (Wallstreets, e.g.), and in PBs later than Pismos (although I haven't specifically tested any of these). I have thus far restricted my purchases to Hitachi/IBM 5K80s, but should these become completely unavailable ... and their availability IS becoming chancy at best ... I will likely switch to Seagate 2.5 drives. I have found Seagate's UATA/100 3.5 7200 rpm drives (Barracudas) and its LVD/SE SCSI 3.5 1 rpm drives (Cheetahs) to be nearly bullet-proof. Seagate's entry into the 2.5 form factor drive market has been relatively recent. -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... A request from the List Mom
As many of you know, the last several years have been difficult for me and Low End Mac. Having survived the trauma of abandonment, separation, and divorce and facing down a lifetime of personal issues, I've worked through them, and rebuilt my life. I've rediscovered my faith and resumed going to church regularly. There is still an emptiness in my life that I tried to fill with online dating. While it can be fun and I've learned a lot about my likes and dislikes, it hasn't produced the deep and rewarding relationship that I have been searching for. So, once again I am turning to the lists for help. When Low End Mac was in financial trouble, the subscribers to the lists responded with generosity and moral support. This is a much narrower request and I'm asking that if there are any females on the lists who are also seeking a meaningful, long term relationship and would consider corresponding with me to see if we might be compatible. At least you'll already be a Mac user! If something develops perhaps you can come visit me in Michigan. Must love winter! It's really beautiful with the snow around here and I always have hot cocoa. Pismo ram and Tiger question
Hello, I have just installed a larger memory module into my Pismo running 10.4.2. It had two 128 mb modules = 256 mb ram total. Therefore, I put in one 256 mb from my ibook G3 300 mhz, leaving the other 128 mb in place = total 384 mb. With the 256 mb only, it ran Tiger. However, once I put the other 256 mb in, it starts up fine, lets me log in and then the cursor freezes. I wondered it if was bad ram, but then why does it boot up? Does anyone have any other suggestions? Thanks. -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and...
