Ti book
Hi All after no reply to my last post i have done some digging and it seems that i am not alone in the symptoms i am having with my Ti. I downloaded the utility coconut battery and it says that the charge of my battery is 85% of the original also says that the battery has done 224 cycles and that the current charge is nil and the adapter is connected but the battery is not charging, does anyone have any ideas as it is starting to get to me that the battery is seen but not charged, also that the mac is only 36months old and the battery has only done 224 cycles. in the apple support pages they say that the battery should last around 400 - 500 cycles. And the battery was working fine then just died totally. is there a reset for the Ti battery like with the pismo one,?? Get the clear screen, I avoided spending the money for a long time but is worth it, the only other thing I ever used on my iBook was the cleaning cloths(dry) used for eyeglasses with the glare resistant coating, but the clear screen stuff works perfectly and you can get individual packs of it (like hand wipe packages) for around $12 for a pack of 15 I believe. Another way to help keep your laptop screen clean is to get some of those clear plastic screen overlay sheets. Macally sells some (http://www.macally.com/spec/specialties/accessories/screenprotector.html) and I've got one on my 15 AL right now. They may not be as cheap as the Kleer Screen wipes, but they do offer a layer of buffer protection against dirt, and also against keyboard imprint too. wake from sleep for chron tasks? (was Mac mini slowing down...)
Except that it won't. Unless you schedule it specifically in Energy Saver, the Mac won't wake up when it's sleeping... Is this option particular to OS 10.4? I went into the energy saver panel in 10.3 and the three wake options I have are: wake when modem rings wake for ethernet network administrator access allow power button to sleep computer Might it be the second option? Is there somewhere else I could look? I was thinking of scheduling the computer to start up at 2:55 AM (or just before the automatic maintenance tasks are scheduled) but I don't know if a scheduled start up will wake a sleeping computer. Transfer to new Powerbook and more
Hello list, I have just received a new 15² PowerBook and am wondering how to best transfer the contents of my iBook G3 to the new laptop. The iBook is currently running OS 10.3.9. I will then need to transfer my wife¹s system from a firewire drive to the iBook. Her system is at OS 10.2.8. We are rebuilding after losing just about everything after hurricane Katrina. What exact contents are you talking about here? If only data, then make sure you create your account on the new PowerBook exactly as it is on your iBook. You can then transfer your preferences from the Preferences folder in the library folder in your home folder on the iBook. If you have too many applications on the iBook that you would rather not reinstall on the PowerBook, you could clone your iBook disk onto the PowerBook disk but you would need to make sure that your PowerBook can boot from 10.3.x. Also, you might lose some provided applications on the PowerBook. You should be able to restore them from one of the DVD you got with it, though. Not sure you will be able to install the OS from the system DVD that came with the PowerBook. Apple has put a little protection that usually prevents you from installing on any other model of Mac except the one you purchased. Migration assistant worked well for me. Start up the old computer in firewire target disk mode attach it to the new one and run migration assistant on the new one. In fact, when you first start up the powerbook it should ask if you want to import old accounts. Do NOT make an account on the new computer in the name you want before doing this. If you make an account, call it temp or something. I made this mistake when I was setting up a new disk for my father's computer; I installed a clean system at home, and a user account in his name, then when I put the disk in his computer and his old disk in a firewire case and tried to migrate from the old disk to the new one, it complained about the duplicate names and I had to make a new {username}_old account. (I should have realized that in advance but I didn't really think it through.) When you're done moving everything to your new powerbook, I would wipe the ibook disk and do a fresh system install, then attach your wife's firewire drive to the ibook and run migration assistant to suck her account over. BUT if you don't have Tiger (and the PB install disks probably won't work), I don't think that migration assistant in the older system (I assume you have 10.3 disks??) is as sophisticated. Not that I've tried to use it. Just that Tiger is the first time I started to hear people advising its use for routine upgrades, because it had gotten so good. Re: Cleaning wipes for PB
You can go into an eyeglass store and get the dry microfiber cloth wipes for a couple of bucks like I do and use those for most cleanings, take it from a low income IT person that just graduated with a 2yr and already has three mouths to feed cheapest way is better, but dont use vinegar or harsh cleansers because they are lying around (I know these are extremes but you get the hint), the repair to the screen will really screw up your budget. Tom, you don't realise that some of us can't afford to use those HoodWipes. I know that I couldn't, simply because I'm a student with an insanely low budget. Heh, I used a PB 190 until a couple of weeks ago, when I got the Lombard, so that should be a sign. In all reality, I just say use what works for you, on your budget. Re: OT: Mac mini slowing down...
Hi Caleb, I have a mini and a G4 iBook and the mini runs faster than the book. There is indeed only one RAM slot and it's hard to get to. But more RAM would help. I suspect there are accumulated cache files that could be fouling things us. If he's using Tiger then those cron jobs get run at startup. But MacJanitor might be useful if he's running Panther. I highly recommend Applejack if you're running Tiger. It seems to fix everything, though it tends to make people nervous. It runs as a Unix script on startup if you start in the single-user mode. Here's what you do. Go here and get the installer for Applejack 1.4.1. It's a disk image. http://applejack.sourceforge.net/ Install it. Start up in single-user by holding down command-S. You'll get the command line screen. Type [applejack] (no brackets) and hit return. Watch the lovely lines scroll by. Do not be impatient. Some of the tasks take a bit of time. When it's all done restart the Mini. It may take longer than usual to start up and to start the finder. Don't worry. This is normal. Much should be improved. What's not fixed is wither due to some background tasks which others on the list have walked through, or just the small amount of RAM.
