You should also be able to use some of the good cleaning solutions
for glasses. Many of the optical/scratch coatings they have now also
require ammonia/alcohol free cleaning solutions. And you'll get a
lot more cleaning solution for your $ than on the Klear Screen pads.

The Net Nanny might slap your wrists OTOH, as far as I'm concerned,
the Mini is a PowerBook without a monitor or battery. The designs are
that similar. The mini should feel snappier than your Lombard. The
mini I had in my office for tests was snappier than the two iBooks

Repairing permissions ain't gonna do anything. I'd get MacJanitor or
a similar program to run the chron based utilities that don't

run. I'd also kill caches.

Finally, look at his auto start utilities and see what he's running

be able to run one good-sized program like Word or Photoshop

Have him download the utility OnyX and run it often. This utility is

Ti book

2005-12-19 Thread VICTORIA.DUGGAN
Hi All after no reply to my last post i have done some digging and
it seems that i am not alone in the symptoms i am having with my Ti.

I downloaded the utility coconut battery and it says that the charge
of my battery is 85% of the original also says that the battery has
done 224 cycles and that the current charge is nil and the adapter is
connected but the battery is not charging,

does anyone have any ideas as it is starting to get to me that the
battery is seen but not charged, also that the mac is only 36months
old and the battery has only done 224 cycles. in the apple support
pages they say that the battery should last around 400 - 500 cycles.
And the battery was working fine then just died totally. is there a
reset for the Ti battery like with the pismo one,??

TIA for any advice or help

vicki

Well, the only programs he uses with any regularity are Safari, Mail

Now, where can I find it?

As far as autostart utilities go, I'll take a look at those. The thing
has only had a total of 3 hours downtime since the day Tiger came out,
and that was only because of a power outage. I don't know, but I may be
replacing my Linux server with some Mac minis if that keeps up...

Now, where do I get MacJanitor, so I can try it?

Thanks for the help,

Get the clear screen, I avoided spending the money for a long time but
is worth it, the only other thing I ever used on my iBook was the
cleaning cloths(dry) used for eyeglasses with the glare resistant
coating, but the clear screen stuff works perfectly and you can get
individual packs of it (like hand wipe packages) for around $12 for a
pack of 15 I believe.

Re: Cleaning wipes for PB

2005-12-19 Thread Howard Katz
Another way to help keep your laptop screen clean is to get some of
those clear plastic screen overlay sheets. Macally sells some
(http://www.macally.com/spec/specialties/accessories/screenprotector.html)
and I've got one on my 15 AL right now.

They may not be as cheap as the Kleer Screen wipes, but they do offer
a layer of buffer protection against dirt, and also against keyboard
imprint too.

wake from sleep for chron tasks? (was Mac mini slowing down...)

2005-12-19 Thread Andrew in Ann Arbor
Except that it won't. Unless you schedule it specifically in Energy
Saver,

the Mac won't wake up when it's sleeping...

Is this option particular to OS 10.4?
I went into the energy saver panel in 10.3 and the three wake options
 I have are:

wake when modem rings
wake for ethernet network administrator access
allow power button to sleep computer

Might it be the second option?
Is there somewhere else I could look?

I was thinking of scheduling the computer to start up at 2:55 AM (or
just before the automatic maintenance tasks are scheduled) but I don't
know if a scheduled start up will wake a sleeping computer.

I do have Onyx and have run it a few times, maybe I need to look at
having it run itself automatically.

Thanks

Use either Klear Screen or HoodWipes, which were designed for cleaning the
screen and the HoodWipes work wonders on the outside of a laptop also.

Don't be such cheap skates, you get 12 HoodWipes for $11 and on my Pismo the
cleaning lasts for a month or so, on both the screen and the case.

Transfer to new Powerbook and more

Hello list,

transfer the contents of my iBook G3 to the new laptop. The iBook is
currently running OS 10.3.9.

I will then need to transfer my wife¹s system from a firewire drive to the
iBook. Her system is at OS 10.2.8. If at all possible I would also like to
update the iBook to Tiger with the install disks from the new PowerBook.

Any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

We are rebuilding after losing just about everything after hurricane
Katrina.

Thanks in advance,

What exact contents are you talking about here? If only data, then make sure
you create your account on the new PowerBook exactly as it is on your iBook.
You can then transfer your preferences from the Preferences folder in the
library folder in your home folder on the iBook.

If you have too many applications on the iBook that you would rather not
reinstall on the PowerBook, you could clone your iBook disk onto the
PowerBook disk but you would need to make sure that your PowerBook can boot
from 10.3.x. Also, you might lose some provided applications on the
PowerBook. You should be able to restore them from one of the DVD you got
with it, though.

Not sure you will be able to install the OS from the system DVD that came
with the PowerBook. Apple has put a little protection that usually prevents
you from installing on any other model of Mac except the one you purchased.
It's not too hard to defeat but you need to be aware of it...

want to import old accounts.

Do NOT make an account on the new computer in the name you want
before doing this. If you make an account, call it temp or
something. I made this mistake when I was setting up a new disk for
my father's computer; I installed a clean system at home, and a user
account in his name, then when I put the disk in his computer and his
old disk in a firewire case and tried to migrate from the old disk to
the new one, it complained about the duplicate names and I had to
make a new {username}_old account. (I should have realized that in
advance but I didn't really think it through.)

When you're done moving everything to your new powerbook, I would
wipe the ibook disk and do a fresh system install, then attach your
wife's firewire drive to the ibook and run migration assistant to
suck her account over. BUT if you don't have Tiger (and the PB
install disks probably won't work), I don't think that migration
assistant in the older system (I assume you have 10.3 disks??) is as
sophisticated. Not that I've tried to use it. Just that Tiger is
the first time I started to hear people advising its use for routine
upgrades, because it had gotten so good.

You can go into an eyeglass store and get the dry microfiber cloth
wipes for a couple of bucks like I do and use those for most cleanings,
take it from a low income IT person that just graduated with a 2yr and
already has three mouths to feed cheapest way is better, but dont use
vinegar or harsh cleansers because they are lying around (I know these
are extremes but you get the hint), the repair to the screen will
really screw up your budget.

I live in the Gobi Desert. While I was typing this I had to clean off
my screen at least 6 times. Talk about literally seeing the dust
fall. What I use, and you can too, is a fresh Bacterian Camel tail.
Just go outside and cut one off. You have to carefully shake out the
sand and remove the flies before using. It's really great. Lasts a
long time, several months and is free.

Re: OT: Mac mini slowing down...

2005-12-19 Thread John Siple

Hi Caleb,

I have a mini and a G4 iBook and the mini runs faster than the book.
There is indeed only one RAM slot and it's hard to get to. But more
RAM would help.

I suspect there are accumulated cache files that could be fouling
things us. If he's using Tiger then those cron jobs get run at
startup. But MacJanitor might be useful if he's running Panther.

I highly recommend Applejack if you're running Tiger. It seems to
fix everything, though it tends to make people nervous. It runs as a
Unix script on startup if you start in the single-user mode.

Here's what you do.
Go here and get the installer for Applejack 1.4.1. It's a disk image.
http://applejack.sourceforge.net/

Install it.

Start up in single-user by holding down command-S.

You'll get the command line screen. Type [applejack] (no brackets)
and hit return.

Watch the lovely lines scroll by. Do not be impatient. Some of the
tasks take a bit of time.

When it's all done restart the Mini. It may take longer than usual to
start up and to start the finder. Don't worry. This is normal.

Much should be improved. What's not fixed is wither due to some
background tasks which others on the list have walked through, or
just the small amount of RAM.

Best,

John

feels more responsive than his Rev. A mini (G4/1.25 GHz, 256 MB

I live in the Gobi Desert. While I was typing this I had to clean
off my screen at least 6 times. Talk about literally seeing the
dust fall. What I use, and you can too, is a fresh Bacterian Camel
tail. Just go outside and cut one off. You have to carefully shake
out the sand and remove the flies before using. It's really great.
Lasts a long time, several months and is free.

But aren't Bacterian Camels microscopic? Yersinia?

There is some shell script inside the system package that checks for a
specific model. I don't remember all the details but I could look on mine if
you send me an email to my personal address, [EMAIL PROTECTED]
The reason they do this is to enforce the license that comes with the new
Macintosh, where you are allowed to reinstall the system but only on that
machine. I think we had a debate about this not long ago so I'd rather not
go there. By using this DVD to install the system on another Macintosh,
you're violating the license that was granted to you.

Teac UJ-845-C drive for a Pismo?

2005-12-19 Thread kaldav

Hello,
Can anyone please tell me if a Teac UJ 845 C laptop DVD/CD drive
would work with a Pismo, or is it only for a G4 laptop? If so, are
there any specific settings for use in a Pismo?

Thanks.

Have not been able to find the iKlear anywhere locally.
Just saw the Monster iClean product that comes with that light terry
towel like microfibre cloth.

Does Apple only approve of iKlear or is iClean a Mac related product
as well ?

The Apple Store sells both.

Here's how they describe iClean at the Apple website:

# Alcohol-free, ammonia-free formula removes dust, dirt, and
fingerprints without damaging your display's protective coating.

# Liquid gel will not drip into delicate electronics.
# Contains a special polymer to protect your display, while reducing
static electricity that attracts dust.
# Special MicroFiberT cloth gently polishes your display without
scratching it.

Hi Donald,

I just now managed to get onto the Apple site - for some reason
have been unable to access any web pages for the last couple of
hours. Anyway, looks like I'll be ordering the iClean on the Apple
Ed site instead. Seems to be a fairly decent product.

Thanks for the info,

Amber
