Re: Lombard won't boot
Thanks, Clark. I'm not sure where I read--or got--the info about open firmware. At the time I was having problems with a WS II. I was never able to open firmware with 9, but could with X. If this is so, and Clark says he could do this on a WS, I wonder what I was doing wrong. Still, the suggestion in the past has been to start with the memory. If it's the L2 cache (which is a memory register--if that's the right term), you'll have to swap with a compatible processor card. Well, I'll just be quiet now and learn from you good folks! Re: Lombard won't boot
If it's the L2, it shouldn't be doing that. To me, it sounds like a failing hard drive or a corrupted partition, but that's my just my Windoze experience talking. Personally, I'd use the chance to go ahead and upgrade to OS X, but that's just what I'd do. It all depends on how much RAM you have, though. James, I've learned a lot from you, as well, so I think it's mutual. Hope this can be of some use, Caleb P.S. G3 Wallstreet CDROM drive tray won't open all the way
I recently became the proud owner of an Apple G3 Wallstreet. The CDROM drive, M2451, has a problem where when the drive is opened, the tray only slides out *half way*. The tray only extends to the point where about half of the spindle (the center part that grabs onto the CD hole) is visible. Out of desperation I carefully removed the top metal cover of the CD drive and looked around inside but as of yet I do not see what is preventing the tray from opening fully. Has anyone had this problem and solved it? Aside from this problem, the drive works well because I was able to install Mac OS 8.6. You may ask how did I manage to do this when the drive only opens half way? Apparently when I first got the machine, the CD tray DID extend far enough to let me insert a CD - but I don't remember seeing the tray opening all the way, but it must have because it is almost impossible to insert a CD with the tray half open, without scratching the CD. I hope I can fix this problem and not have to buy a new CD drive. Thanks. Eddie -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: Lombard Wireless Woes
Caleb, When you encounter a web page that has problems in Safari it is because the page creater did not follow the standards (Windows and Explorer do not follow the standards, Safari does). There is a solution: In Safari, you can use the Debug menu to display web pages as if you were using Explorer. If you do not see the Debug menu item on your menu bar do the following: Go to Terminal and type in this line: defaults write com.apple.Safari IncludeDebugMenu 1 Then Debug will appear on your Safari menu line. Click on Debug and you will see a menu item Open Page With. Moving the curser to that entry will display Explorer. Click on that and you should be able to see the page as if you were using Explorer. If you want to remove the Debug menu item, go to terminal and type: defaults write com.apple.Safari IncludeDebugMenu 0 Art Richard (St. Petersburg, FL) -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Go slow and beware static electricity. I don't wear my polertec vest over my cotton shirt and I always touch the aluminum frame around the hard drive before touching anything else. The RAM sticks go into the socket at a 45 degree angle, make sure they are all the way in then push them down flat against the board. Try the memory in different combinations, each stick in each slot. Try just one stick at a time, if it starts with one but not the other you've got a good idea where the problem is. If you can get it started Apple System Profiler will tell you what memory it sees and if the external L2 cache is present. sticky drawer on Pismo DVD drive
I've been trying to sort out a Lombard for my father in law and I have a 6x DVD drive that seems to work OK once you get the drive closed. The drawer binds as I try and close it, sometimes I have to open it and clse it several times before I can get it to close all the way. Once it's closed it works fine. There seems to be a lot of friction in the slides so either something's jumped the track or something needs lubrication. If I can't find anything obvoiusly out of line I'm thinking of a little silicon lube on the slides. Any suggestions?
