Re: WiFI antenna
Has anyone ever come up with a way of connecting some kind of external antenna to the PB to boost signal connectivity? I've got the G4 AL 15 machine, and I don't even see a decent place to attach something to a screw. It would have been nice if there had been a plug or port on the side of the screen that could have done this! If your card slot is free you could look for a PC card adapter with an antenna port. Not as slick as the internal card though. Probably easier to get a higher gain antenna on the access point. Re: plugging in the power lead - does it matter?
I read that one should always plug in the power brick before connecting power lead to the Book. If I move it from one place to another, I am conscientiously unplugging it and re plugging it in correct sequence rather than just carrying it with the power lead and brick connected and then replugging the plug into the wall while still connected. I just want to check out if this is over paranoid behaviour or not? I mean the manual suggests not to move the Powerbook while on but people do - but carefully - right? I know that the 5XX series powerbooks were very particular about not being plugged into an unplugged adapter. This was one of the first (perhaps the first?) powerbook with the intelligent battery controller. Apparently plugging a 520 into an unplugged adapter would likely confuse the battery controller. Perhaps this is where the admonition against unplugging the adapter from the wall first came from? I'm not sure if the later powerbooks are as sensitive. On the other hand the power jack on the powerbook is subject to mechanical failure after some number of plug/unplug cycles so leaving the adapter plugged in when you move the computer may risk corrupting the powermanager but spare the power jack. Kanga weirdness
So I've got this PB G3 original (3400 style AKA Kanga) that I've been trying to bring back from the near dead. It's got the hiss of death I suppose you could call it. I've replaced the PRAM and the PMU, but plugging it in gives nothing more than a hissing through the speakers. Every so often (1 in 100 times if I'm lucky) resetting it will get a chime, but nothing else. I haven't heard a chime in ages. Until today. Somewhere in my googling I vaguely remembered reading that coldness helps circuits reconnect (or something - you can see I really retained a lot about it), anyway I decided what the h*** and I put the whole computer (sans battery) in my freezer for about 10-15 minutes. Lo and behold upon the first resetting it chimed and brought me to a screen with a flashing floppy (the drive is wiped clean). I could hardly believe it. Unfortunately the flashing floppy eventually froze (computer style, not ice) and it would go no further. However, once again upon freezing the unit (ice style, not computer) it started up again (I had a cd in the drive this time ready to install an OS) but it soon froze up (computer style). I can repeat this over and over and over, but it only gets going for a minute or so until it gets too hot (I'm guessing) and stops. So it's not dead yet. But what's next? Any ideas on where I should look for bad circuits based on this limited info? Thanks all. -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Just thought I'd let ya know that after pulling it from the deepfreeze it starts up every time from the power button - no need to reset. Curious. Re: Kanga weirdness quick update
A/some capacitor/s on the logic board have failed somewhere, you could locate which one by buying a can of electronic service aid freeze spray (ebay), then spraying one at a time with the Kanga opened up wide ( ie dismembered but connected!), if you find the bad one you then have to replace it, no mean feat. PMu you have tried so its the logic somewhere. Good luck! Re: i-pod ???
Hi Woody Yes it is very easy to get your music on the ipod. I would go with the 60 gig ipod its the best value for your $. You wont be confined with space if you have alot of pics and or music not to metion the video. I think the nano is to small for what you are looking for. You may still be able to find a mini on ebay but they seem to be in high demand. bad pixel counts and Applecare
It appears that I now have several bad pixels on my Powerbook. Coincidentally, Applecare had already told me to take it in to have the latch assembly (the one on the LCD panel) replaced, as well as the keyboard. However, when I took it in for the service guy to check it in and verify the condition of the computer, he pointed out that there were several dead pixels (mostly full off/Black) on the screen and that it may qualify for the entire LCD panel to be replaced. I was just wondered if anybody has had Apple authorize this before - how many bad pixels do you normally have to have for them to approve a complete screen replacement ? Dear listers, I restarted my Lombard after all the iApps quit working on my Lombard, and now it's not booting. By iApps, I mean Safari, Mail and iChat, but I digress. It'll boot to the point where it says Waiting for Application Services and then it just sits there. No HD activity, nothing. Re: Lombard won't boot
Caleb, Hold down the '9' key while booting - hopefully you'll be able to boot into OS 9. One alternative is that you may be able to do a 'safe' boot in OS X and recover your files. Just hold down the Shift key while booting - this may help prevent the 'Services' hang. Sounds like you need to repair the disk with something like DiskWarrior. If you're lucky, Apple's Disk Utility will fix it for you. Otherwise, you might be looking at a fresh format and install - hopefully you have a recent backup or are able to recover your files beforehand. I'm running 10.2.8, but I've got 9.2.1 on the drive, but I don't know how to switch boot partitions without booting into the Mac OS. I've also got an 8.5 CD that came with the machine, but it won't boot from that. Any help will be appreciated, Caleb -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Now I'm a mac person but I don't know much about how the i-pod loads music. Help me if you know. On either or both models: can I load music from my CD's or do I have to download from i-tunes ? It's hardly worth it if I have to pay for music twice. I'd appreciate any info from those who know. Thanks, Woody Use iTunes to import (rip) your CDs. iTunes will automatically send these files to your iPod when you connect it. (That is a default setting and can be turned off.) My problem is I always forget to eject my iPod before shutting down my Powerbook. -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: Lombard won't boot
Caleb, Here's what to try. Follow carefully. Learned this from someone who knows. Have you tried fsck method? What you want to do is shut down or restart, hold down the Command and S key. You will then get a bunch of text scrolling across the screen. Once this starts, you can let off the keys. It will continue until it stops and gives you a prompt. Type in fsck -yMake sure you leave a space after the k. Then push Enter. Let it do its thing. It will begin repairing any corrupted unix files used by OSX. When it is done, you can do it again. After its says repairs have been made, then type logout If you use a Journaled Disk, then you want to type infsck -f instead. This will force repair. The regular OSX will then begin booting up. You should then restart. This has repaired some of the most major problems but instructions must be followed to the letter. If anybody would like to add to this before Caleb uses it, please do. You can try rebooting in 9 by pressing Option immediately after the boot tone and holding it down until you see the Welcome to Mac OS screen. There is probably something wrong with the disk, though, so that might not work either. -Laurent. -- Laurent Daudelin AIM/iChat: LaurentDaudelinhttp://nemesys.dyndns.org Logiciels Nemesys Software mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] guiltware: /gilt'weir/ n. 1.
