I have to add to this discussion, too. A few weeks ago I was using an
Olympus digital camera borrowed from my department at the university.
After I was done taking pictures I came back to download them to a
computer. Now, the department has IBM Thinkpads and Dell Inspirions.
(No Macs! And this is the New Media Institute!) They have several
different digital cameras, and my professor had specifically given me
the Olympus because, as he said, This camera tends to work better with
those IBMs. I had bad feelings about trying this on a PC, but I
thought I'd give it a shot, remembering my prof's words. I got out a
Stinkpad - I mean, Thinkpad - and plugged the USB cable from the camera
into the computer. Surprise, surprise... Windows new hardware found
message pops up and asks if I want to install drivers. I knew it was
futile but I thought, why not, and did the search for drivers deal,
and of course, it couldn't find any. I decided to reboot (because we
know how Windows lves those reboots) with the camera still plugged
in and this time the computer did not recognize the camera at all. I
was getting really annoyed because I was short on time and working
toward a fast-approaching deadline. Fortunately, I had my iBook with
me. I took it out, plugged in the camera, which immediately showed up
as a drive on the desktop, then opened iPhoto and imported the
pictures. Simple as that. Took less than a minute. I could've spent
another 15-30 minutes (at least!) futzing with that IBM trying to get
it to work, but hey, I don't have time for that kind of crap. (I felt
like the Switcher commercial about the girl who saved Christmas.) :)

And yet there are still plenty of people in my program (Master of
Internet Technology) who CONTINUE to scoff at and make fun of Macs,
even though they've never used one (or if they have, it was at least 10
years ago) AND their computers are constantly breaking! Seriously -
there are 27 people in my program and the count is up to 10 now of how
many people's peecee laptops have had major problems requiring them to
be out of commission for days to weeks this semester! Meanwhile, I
cruise along with my iBook, getting all my work done and having time to
spare.

One last comment: I wouldn't be using OS X at *all* if it weren't for
WindowShadeX! I *hate* the default behavior of OS X's minimzing
windows - looks wy too much like Windows to me, and for me it is
more difficult to keep track of everything I have open, than if I have
their menubars floating around the desktop in out-of-the-way positions.
When I upgraded to Jag, I was worried that WindowShadeX might not work
anymore, but fortunately it does! (Sadly, the other two
shareware/freeware apps I'd been using in 10.1.5 - FruitMenu and ASM -
do not work in Jag.) I've also recently downloaded Labels X, which
brings the classic Mac OS labels back - I love it!

Broken iBook key

A few weeks ago when I was popping all the keys off my iBook's keyboard
so I could clean underneath, I accidentally broke the little spring
mechanism on the F9 key. I tried to fix it with glue but couldn't.
Fortunately, I never use F9, so it's not a big deal; but does anyone
know where I could get a replacement? I know it's a weird thing to ask
for. But I hate seeing that empty spot in the upper right corner of my
keyboard! :)

 Amber,

Create another user account and see if the problem persists when you
log in as the new user. If the problem goes away, you've got a corrupt

John,

Thanks for the suggestion! I created a new user account and logged in

weird, (not-so-)random crashes in 10.2

2002-12-02 Thread Amber Rhea
Hi all,

I installed Jaguar on my iBook/500 about a week or so ago and have been
mostly happy with it; however, I have noticed some odd things going on.
If I right-click in certain programs (IE 5.2, BBEdit 6.1, and iChat
noted to date), or if I click on certain things in the iChat Buddy List
window, the program crashes with the familiar unexpectedly quit
message. This has been happening consistently in these programs, doing
these tasks. (It may be likely to happen in other programs too, but so
far these are the ones that I've noticed.)

At first I thought the issue was with my Logitech mouse, as I posted
several days ago. But these same problems occur even with the mouse
disconnected and using the trackpad.

Disk Utility finds no problems. I ran Repair Permissions shortly after
installing 10.2, but I suppose I could run it again. I don't have any
other diagnostic utilities for OS X. (I do have DiskWarrior, but I'm
not sure if it's Jag compatible, and plus I don't think it would find
the kind of problem likely to be causing this anyway.)

Like I said, this weirdness has started only since I've installed 10.2;
things were fine in 10.1.5 and prior. Right-clicking does not cause
problems in apps other than the ones noted, and the iChat business is

Thanks,
Amber

It doesn't happen with my Logitech Optical Wheel Mouse, Jaguar, and IE
 5.2.2/iChat. I'm using a Pismo 500, but I suspect the difference is
that I'm not using any Logitech drivers or software; just the mouse
plugged in on the Jaguar base build. Works fine.

Well, it can't be that, because I was not using any Logitech drivers and it
was happening. I downloaded the Logitech drivers because I thought they
might fix the problem. I used this same mouse with no additional drivers
under 10.1.5 for months with no problems... so it must be something
particular to Jaguar (I'm running 10.2.2). Not a huge deal, but I'd just
like to get to the bottom of it!

force quit?

2002-11-18 Thread Amber Rhea
As I posted a few days ago, lately I have been having to force quit OS X
Mail a lot, due to randomly getting the incessant spinning beachball which
will not stop, and the application will not respond to any keystrokes. No
one replied to my post to offer any suggestions as to why Mail is suddenly
behaving this way, but the cause doesn't bother me as much as the possible
effects - how potentially damaging is it, really, to force quit often? I
imagine it would be different under OS X than OS 9, but I know it's still
not the ideal thing to do.

Thanks,
Amber

OS X Mail problem

2002-11-13 Thread Amber Rhea
Hi all,

Just recently I've begun experiencing a problem with Mail in OS X. I'm
running 10.1.5 on an iBook. Sometimes, after I receive new mail, when I
click on a new message to open it, I get the spinning beachball
cursor... forever! (I've let it go for several minutes.) Then I have to
force quit. Often when I re-open Mail after that, it is fine.

This seems to happen truly randomly. It's not *that* big of a deal to me
since it hasn't been a major inconvenience, but I don't like to force
quit too much for fear of doing damage (what type, I don't know, but I
just don't like it). Any thoughts?

Can the iBook (firewire version) VGA adapter be used to connect to a

equipment in the room. If you could email (or at least CC) any replies
off-list I would really appreciate it - I'm in digest mode but I'm giving
this presentation tomorrow afternoon so I need to know ASAP. I hadn't
thought about it until I looked at Apple's website and it mentioned
compatibility with certain VGA monitors, but said nothing about projectors.

Thanks in advance,

Amber

I haven't tried it since, but when I get some free time (probably not until
next week, after my four exams - gotta love grad school) I'll try it again.
Another lister mentioned that AIM had been having connection problems in
general, so that might've been the explanation.

Automatically connect to Airport network?

2002-10-02 Thread Amber Rhea

Hi everyone,

It used to be that when my iBook detected certain Airport networks (such as
the one at my home, and the one in the building where I have most of my
classes, it would automatically connect to the network. But recently (past
few days) for some reason it's stopped automatically connecting - instead I
have to go up to the little Airport icon in the menubar (OS X) and select
the network. I can't find a preference to set anywhere... anyone know what's
up?

Thanks,
Amber

Fire

2002-10-02 Thread Amber Rhea

I use Fire to chat with AIM and Yahoo Messenger. Today it started randomly
disconnecting me and reconnecting me. After this happened several times, I
started getting an alert over and over again, saying You have been blocked.
Maybe you've been signing on and off too often or too quickly. I quit Fire
and restarted it, but still got the alert. How do I make this go away so I
can use Fire again?

Has anyone found a Hotline client that actually *works* with OS X? I've

SCP (Secure Copy)

2002-09-09 Thread Amber Rhea

Hi all,

In one of my classes, we have to upload files to the departmental server.
The professor who's in charge of the server has turned off FTP, so we have
to use SCP instead. I successdully uploaded everything to public_html with
NiftyTelnet SSH (after becoming fed up with trying to figure out how to do
it through OS X's terminal) but when I try to view the files (they're all
HTML files) with a browser, I get 403 Forbidden. I've had this problem in
the past with other servers, and the solution has always been to use passive
FTP. However, I don't see such an option or equivalent with SCP. Can anyone
enlighten me?

Thanks in advance!

Re: TiBook HotPlate

2002-08-29 Thread Amber Rhea

Apparently it is a known problem with at least some TiBooks. I saw it
mentioned on another email list a few months ago.

My husband works at the Dept. of Biochemistry at the local university,
supporting a lot of Macs, and recently a professor had to send her new
TiBook back to Apple because it was overheating so much that the screen
image would get warped. Apple worked their magic and took care of the
problem. On the other hand, the network administrator at my workplace just
got a new TiBook and has had no problems.

Other than that, I have no further info. :O

I currently run OS X in single-user mode. I do have administrator

Fussy iBook CD-ROM drive

2002-06-12 Thread Amber Rhea

Hi everyone,

My iBook (one of the new ones, not clamshell) is having an annoying
problem with the CD-ROM drive. Sometimes, when I trash a CD, the drive tray
will pop out only a few millimeters. I can't push it back in (it pops right
back out, but again only that small bit) and I can't pry it open with my
fingers, either. It's happened three times now, and each time after much
pushing and prodding, I got it to come out normally after pushing it in and
holding it (or something... I actually don't know *what* it was that I did
that made it come out normally). I'm guessing some internal mechanism must
be sticking; any ideas? Would something as simple as a shot of WD40 take
care of it? I certainly don't want to damage any CDs, or the drive itself,
with all this pushing and pulling.

Thanks!!

OS X Mail offline

This is probably a silly question with a very simple answer, but...
after a certain period of time, if Mail doesn't successfully connect

Offline appears next to Inbox. How do I get it back 'Online'? Couldn't
find anything in Preferences/Help/Accounts.

Address Book import

2002-05-31 Thread Amber Rhea

Hi,

A quick question - is there a way for me to import my address book list

Or rather, it doesn't seem to make an 'address book file' or anything
that can be easily copied/backed up (that I know of).

TIA,

 Amber,

You could try the following: booting up to OS X select any Word file, right
click (or ctrl + click) and select 'Show Info'. In the upper part of the
window the is a dropdown list, click on the little arrow where it says
'General Information' and select 'Open with Application'. Click on the icon
of the Application (which should be the 'W' for word X) and the select the
word 2001 program, which is either already in the list or you can select by
browsing to your folder tree by choosing 'other..' (possible location:
Application (Mac OS 9)-Microsoft Office ?). The symbol should now stand for
word 2001. Finally click on 'Change All...' and confirm the dialog box. That
 should do the job.

 Good luck.

Hi again,

I tried that (as someone else mentioned, that isn't the optimale solution...
I'd like it to know which OS I'm using an open in the appropriate Word
version... but anyway) I changed 'Open With Application' to the OS 9 version
of Word for all .doc and .rtf files, but when I booted back into OS 9 and
double-clicked a Word file, I got that same message: To use Microsoft Word
your computer must be running MacOS X 10.1 or later. I'm guessing that all
I've succeeding in doing is changing it so that in OS X, double-clicking a
Word file will launch Classic mode. :P I guess my only option left is
ResEdit? Any idea as to how to go about it? (And I know someone else said
that they think I should ditch one or the other version, but I do not want
to do that, at least not yet.)

Thanks again,
Amber

Microsoft Word documents in OS 9 and OS X

2002-05-23 Thread Amber Rhea

Hi all,

I just got a new iBook (500 MHz) the other day, and so far I love it.
However, I have one question. It has OS 9 and OS X installed on the same
partition. I have both Microsoft Office 2001 and Microsoft Office X.
However, by default all my Word files have become associated with Office X.
(I did not have Office X on my old computer.) If I double-click a Word
document in OS 9 I get the message To use Microsoft Word your computer must
be running MacOS X 10.1 or later. If I open Word first and then open the
file from within it, it is fine. I don't boot into OS X very often, and when
I do, it is mainly to work on Java programming and nothing else. How can I
get the computer to know to use the version of Word that coincides with the
OS I am currently using? (Does that make sense?) I assume I would have to
use ResEdit, if I can do it at all. Thanks in advance!
