I have to add to this discussion, too. A few weeks ago I was using an Olympus digital camera borrowed from my department at the university. After I was done taking pictures I came back to download them to a computer. Now, the department has IBM Thinkpads and Dell Inspirions. (No Macs! And this is the New Media Institute!) They have several different digital cameras, and my professor had specifically given me the Olympus because, as he said, This camera tends to work better with those IBMs. I had bad feelings about trying this on a PC, but I thought I'd give it a shot, remembering my prof's words. I got out a Stinkpad - I mean, Thinkpad - and plugged the USB cable from the camera into the computer. Surprise, surprise... Windows new hardware found message pops up and asks if I want to install drivers. I knew it was futile but I thought, why not, and did the search for drivers deal, and of course, it couldn't find any. I decided to reboot (because we know how Windows lves those reboots) with the camera still plugged in and this time the computer did not recognize the camera at all. I was getting really annoyed because I was short on time and working toward a fast-approaching deadline. Fortunately, I had my iBook with me. I took it out, plugged in the camera, which immediately showed up as a drive on the desktop, then opened iPhoto and imported the pictures. Simple as that. Took less than a minute. I could've spent another 15-30 minutes (at least!) futzing with that IBM trying to get it to work, but hey, I don't have time for that kind of crap. (I felt like the Switcher commercial about the girl who saved Christmas.) :) And yet there are still plenty of people in my program (Master of Internet Technology) who CONTINUE to scoff at and make fun of Macs, even though they've never used one (or if they have, it was at least 10 years ago) AND their computers are constantly breaking! Seriously - there are 27 people in my program and the count is up to 10 now of how many people's peecee laptops have had major problems requiring them to be out of commission for days to weeks this semester! But my hardware is adequate, so that's not the reason I stick with 9. I run Jaguar on a iBook 500 w/384 megs RAM. I saw a *huge* improvement in OS X performance after I installed Jag. With 10.1.5 (and earlier), performance was acceptable, but sluggish - certainly *a lot* slower than OS 9. Because of this I used 9 much more than X, as what matters to me is how fast and smoothly I can get my tasks accomplished, not whether I'm running the latest and greatest. Now, with Jaguar, I cannot notice a speed difference between X and 9, and I boot into X a lot more. Not saying you should or should not take the plunge for Jaguar - just sharing my experience. One last comment: I wouldn't be using OS X at *all* if it weren't for WindowShadeX! I *hate* the default behavior of OS X's minimzing windows - looks wy too much like Windows to me, and for me it is more difficult to keep track of everything I have open, than if I have their menubars floating around the desktop in out-of-the-way positions. When I upgraded to Jag, I was worried that WindowShadeX might not work anymore, but fortunately it does! (Sadly, the other two shareware/freeware apps I'd been using in 10.1.5 - FruitMenu and ASM - do not work in Jag.) A few weeks ago when I was popping all the keys off my iBook's keyboard so I could clean underneath, I accidentally broke the little spring mechanism on the F9 key. weird, (not-so-)random crashes in 10.2
Hi all, I installed Jaguar on my iBook/500 about a week or so ago and have been mostly happy with it; however, I have noticed some odd things going on. If I right-click in certain programs (IE 5.2, BBEdit 6.1, and iChat noted to date), or if I click on certain things in the iChat Buddy List window, the program crashes with the familiar unexpectedly quit message. This has been happening consistently in these programs, doing these tasks. (It may be likely to happen in other programs too, but so far these are the ones that I've noticed.) At first I thought the issue was with my Logitech mouse, as I posted several days ago. But these same problems occur even with the mouse disconnected and using the trackpad. Disk Utility finds no problems. I ran Repair Permissions shortly after installing 10.2, but I suppose I could run it again. I don't have any other diagnostic utilities for OS X. (I do have DiskWarrior, but I'm not sure if it's Jag compatible, and plus I don't think it would find the kind of problem likely to be causing this anyway.) Like I said, this weirdness has started only since I've installed 10.2; things were fine in 10.1.5 and prior. Right-clicking does not cause problems in apps other than the ones noted, and the iChat business is just plain weird. It doesn't happen with my Logitech Optical Wheel Mouse, Jaguar, and IE 5.2.2/iChat. I'm using a Pismo 500, but I suspect the difference is that I'm not using any Logitech drivers or software; just the mouse plugged in on the Jaguar base build. Works fine. Well, it can't be that, because I was not using any Logitech drivers and it was happening. I downloaded the Logitech drivers because I thought they might fix the problem. I used this same mouse with no additional drivers under 10.1.5 for months with no problems... so it must be something particular to Jaguar (I'm running 10.2.2). OS X Mail problem
Hi all, Just recently I've begun experiencing a problem with Mail in OS X. I'm running 10.1.5 on an iBook. Sometimes, after I receive new mail, when I click on a new message to open it, I get the spinning beachball cursor... forever! (I've let it go for several minutes.) Then I have to force quit. Often when I re-open Mail after that, it is fine. This seems to happen truly randomly. It's not *that* big of a deal to me since it hasn't been a major inconvenience, but I don't like to force quit too much for fear of doing damage (what type, I don't know, but I just don't like it). SCP (Secure Copy)
Hi all, In one of my classes, we have to upload files to the departmental server. The professor who's in charge of the server has turned off FTP, so we have to use SCP instead. I successdully uploaded everything to public_html with NiftyTelnet SSH (after becoming fed up with trying to figure out how to do it through OS X's terminal) but when I try to view the files (they're all HTML files) with a browser, I get 403 Forbidden. I've had this problem in the past with other servers, and the solution has always been to use passive FTP. However, I don't see such an option or equivalent with SCP. Can anyone enlighten me? Re: TiBook HotPlate
Apparently it is a known problem with at least some TiBooks. I saw it mentioned on another email list a few months ago. My husband works at the Dept. of Biochemistry at the local university, supporting a lot of Macs, and recently a professor had to send her new TiBook back to Apple because it was overheating so much that the screen image would get warped. Apple worked their magic and took care of the problem. On the other hand, the network administrator at my workplace just got a new TiBook and has had no problems. Other than that, I have no further info. :O Amber On 8/29/02 9:58 PM, G-Books at [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I don't have any problems with my TiBook. Fussy iBook CD-ROM drive
Hi everyone, My iBook (one of the new ones, not clamshell) is having an annoying problem with the CD-ROM drive. Sometimes, when I trash a CD, the drive tray will pop out only a few millimeters. I can't push it back in (it pops right back out, but again only that small bit) and I can't pry it open with my fingers, either. It's happened three times now, and each time after much pushing and prodding, I got it to come out normally after pushing it in and holding it (or something... I actually don't know *what* it was that I did that made it come out normally). I'm guessing some internal mechanism must be sticking; any ideas? Microsoft Word documents in OS 9 and OS X
Hi all, I just got a new iBook (500 MHz) the other day, and so far I love it. However, I have one question. It has OS 9 and OS X installed on the same partition. I have both Microsoft Office 2001 and Microsoft Office X. However, by default all my Word files have become associated with Office X. (I did not have Office X on my old computer.) If I double-click a Word document in OS 9 I get the message To use Microsoft Word your computer must be running MacOS X 10.1 or later. If I open Word first and then open the file from within it, it is fine. I don't boot into OS X very often, and when I do, it is mainly to work on Java programming and nothing else. How can I get the computer to know to use the version of Word that coincides with the OS I am currently using? (Does that make sense?) I assume I would have to use ResEdit, if I can do it at all.
