Re: Mac OS X 10.2.8 update
Apple released in software updates Mac OS X 10.2.8. I downloaded it last night. Boy does it make a difference. Yes, made a real difference on my machine : total @#$%ed it! Machine : Lombard 333, 320Mb Ram, external monitor, USB keyboard & mouse Install, restart, OK so far. Finder back up - monitor arrangement is around the wrong way. Revert it. Soon there's all sorts of messages in the console, the external CRT monitor suddenly receives no signal and the LCD (built-in) goes colour mental with bands and stripes everywhere! Restart, similar problems. I notice there a crash log for OBEX. I have disabled all my login items and the problem seems to have vanished. I'll have to investigate further tomorrow - when I'm feeling brave again! PS - It killed all my Stickies too! Cheers, Antony. -- == == = = Antony N. Re: Lombard crashing
The cache is fubar. This is a known problem with Lombards : <http://www.pbzone.com/archive/1002_1thru7.shtml> Don't expect to be able to fix it (unless its under extended warranty) or you're interested in replacing the processor with either a second hand one (from a scrapped Lombard) or a processor upgrade... One of mine died like this a few weeks back. Some users have reported their Lombards continue to deteriorate until the point where they won't boot at all. Cheers, Antony. -- == == = = Antony N. Re: lombard identification question
>First off, I'm not sure whether the one I have is the 333 mhz model or the >400 mhz model. The 333 model does not have the MPEG card in it so you can't use the Apple DVD Player (or any other player that uses hardware decoding) to play discs. You can still use software decoding players but these tend to lack in the performance stakes. >Also, IIRC, os 10.1 did not have DVD support for this model. Does >Jaguar? As far as I am aware - no. I suspect this to be due to the decoder card not being supported. Same goes with using Zoomed Video input (PCMCIA cards such as the CapSure.) Running OS X on the Lombard sucks a little (I am running it on my Lombard 333 here) as the video card is NOT supported. There is a hack (which I have tried) that greatly increases graphics performance but it can be somewhat flaky. Cheers, Antony. -- == == = = Antony N. PCMCIA Ethernet Card (Nuked PowerBook Ethernet)
Well it seems the winter storms here in Australia have claimed their first victim : One of the G3 PowerBooks in the house was left plugged in (network) and on last night (you bad people!) and come this morning it can't see / be seen by the network. An investigation / test of the machine and network seems to point to the onboard ethernet having been fried. Replacing the motherboard to solve this problem will be just too costly and I suspect there's no one out there who will do a component level repair for anything substantially less than the cost of the mobo anyway. Luckily none of the other computers, printers, hubs, switches, cable modem or peripherals were damaged! So in short I'm looking for a PCMCIA 10/100 ethernet card for this machine. Its running OS 9.2.2 - OS X compatibility would be nice but not essential. Any recommendations on brands / products? As an aside - has anyone seen a USB Ethernet adaptor that actually works / works well on the Mac? My experiences in PC land tell me this is a no no. Cheers, Antony. -- == == = = Antony N. Re: LaserWriter 4/600 PS
I'm currently using a 4/600 on my Lombard via an (old) Farallon iPrint LT (LocalTalk <-> Ethernet) adaptor. Maybe try looking on eBay? Cheers, Antony. -- == == = = Antony N. Re: I need massive amounts of information
>10.1.5, not jag. >a 333 bronze >216MB ram >4 gig HD, (I'll partition like so: 2gig for X, 500 for 9, and 1.5 for >docs/music) I have the same machine, except with a much larger retrofit HD and more RAM. My thoughts * 2 x 2Gb partitions will be gobbled up VERY quickly. I suspect after a 10.1.5 install is done it wouldn't let you take it to 10.2 based on the space left * 10.1.5 on a Bronze (compared to Jaguar) is slow and bloody awful * 10.2.x is much better / faster / reliable * The Lombard (333 & 400) video cards are not officially supported for the OS X Quartz engine so graphics are quite sluggish - especially under 10.1.5 - there is a well documented hack out there for enabling support but there are still several bugs with it * I think 256Mb of RAM for running OS X / Classic / Photoshop is going to be a little thin... I still boot in 9 for my "big" projects. YMMV - Cheers, Antony. -- == == = = Antony N. ATIRagePro.kext - My OS X Hack Dies...
Background : Lombard 333, OS 10.1.5, OS 9.2.2 (Separate Partitions) I performed the ATIRagePro.kext hack on my Lombard 333 and was staggered to see the performance difference of OS X 10.1.5 So I kept my old ATIRagePro.kext for a few days and everything seemed fine. Sods Law dictated that the day I trashed it and restarted the Kernel panicked at bootup, right after the ATIRage drivers came up. Anyone out there want to contact me off list and send me a copy of the file again (I've yet to work out a way of editing a .kext file in OS9.) Cheers, Antony. -- == == = = Antony N. Re: SO DIMM : 128Mb recognized on a 256...
>I got a problem with my G3 333 "bronze" installing a 256 Mb SO-DIMM SDRAM >PC100 : whether I take it in the upper or the lower bank, the Mac recognize >only 128 Mb. > >Anyone who have an idea about the issue? This is a firmware related issue on the Lombard (especially the 333 which I own) - it is not a fixable thing (without replacing the motherboard with a newer revision.) My story - * I purchased a half-height 256Mb upgrade from OWC * It didn't work * Swapped it with them * Still didn't work * Did some serious research, found out about this problem in he "early days" of the Lombard * Told them * Bought a full height instead * They weren't interested in refunding the price difference between a full / half height unit (which was a fair bit at the time) - bastards! Don't forget the Lombard can only take a "half height" unit in the lower memory slot. If I find the Apple article I'll post the link... -- == = = = = Antony N.
