iBook as Desktop
(I'm waiting to hear more about 10.4.3/10.4.4/10.4.5 for my iBook, and when I have an extra $100 I'll upgrade the eMac to Tiger) Thanks for any input. Concetta I've upgraded my BW (G4/450) and iBook (G3/500) from 4.3 to 4.4 to 4.5 and have had no problems at all. Hey, all, thanks I received a couple of posts encouraging me to go ahead and upgrade from 10.4.2 to 10.4.5. So I'm going to take the plunge... Thanks for giving me courage... Re: iBook as Desktop
Is anybody here happy with using their iBooks or small screen PowerBooks as desktop machines? Do you hook up an extra keyboard and mouse? Happy with the small screen? Or do you hook up a larger monitor? Elevate the laptop on a stand? I used to use an eMac and an iBook and keep them synchronized. Hey, that's my setup. I'm having a little problem synching the two. How did you do it? I would like a fast, easy, cheap way to sync my iBook to my eMac. Just update the files that have been added or changed (documents, iTunes, iPhoto, Mail, bookmarks spring to mind). I don't want to do a complete backup (I have that on an external HD). Also, does it matter that my iBook is 10.4.2, and eMac is 10.3.9? (I'm waiting to hear more about 10.4.3/10.4.4/10.4.5 for my iBook, and when I have an extra $100 I'll upgrade the eMac to Tiger) Thanks for any input. Re: on line privacy
Tim Hodgson wrote: I think Sandra's making the distinction between a private mailing list, such as G-Books was, and a list which is publicly archived and can thus be searched via Google. But I don't know whether that's true of Google groups. I'm on other lists that archive the postings. If I Google my name or the specific topic I find links to my e-mail in the archives. Even if that were not true, one should assume that anything posted on the web is out there somewhere for all to see. Woody They'd have to know what to look for, I believe. Also, I thought there was an option that Dan could choose to keep the list from being searchable. He may have done that. (Dan?) As an experiment to confirm what I thought: I belong to 5 Yahoo Groups. Only one of them has PUBLIC archives. I Googled myself in all sorts of forms. I did find some records - ONLY from the list that had PUBLIC archives. OK, I just went to Google Groups. This new group has PUBLIC archives. Concetta -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: Moving to Google Groups
Members of the G-Books list, We're slowly moving the Low End Mac email lists from Maclaunch to Google Groups, which we see as a real improvment. Google Groups functions as an email list, so if you want to keep doing things like you have in the past, that's fine. It also adds a searchable online archive plus the ability to read and reply to posts using your browser. To sign up for the new list, go to http://groups.google.com/group/g-books There are some things about Google Groups that are a bit different, so be sure to read the updated list FAQ, which explains the subscription confirmation system and some other features, such as online subscription management. Dan Knight, listmom If you want to have the email come to your currently used email account vs a gmail one, send a message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] If you use Dan's link, you're asked to use or create a google account. Not a problem if you already have an account on their system you want to use. All posts will either stay in the google groups area, or be posted to your gmail account. If however you want the emails to go to another email address, say your own ISP, then you use the join-by-email address I posted. Sorry, but I still don't get it. If I sign up with the first link, I get a digest sent to my current email address. If I sign up with the second link, I get a digest sent to my current email address. I'm not sure I get the difference. Before the other posts came along, I clicked on the first link and went into a Google account, which I may already have had, and joined that list. Now I'm wondering if I should unsubscribe and click on the second link. I have no idea what difference it makes. Concetta -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: security re: file sharing/networks
Is there anyone out there who hasn't burned a music CD for a friend or relative? YES Of course, many of us stick to a personal code of conduct and do not justify our actions based on what others might do or not do. Fortunately, most us do not throw wrappers, make noise, speed around, nor fail to pay our taxes. We don't do it to set an example. We simply can't envision doing it any other way. Couldn't have said it better. -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: Airport Question
Reminds me of when I went to Staples, and asked a salesperson about setting up a wireless network between a PC and a Mac. They didn't know, so they called over a higher up, who told me it could not be done. I got a Linksys WRT54G (not from Staples), installed an Airport extreme card, called Linksys tech support and very soon after, Voilà, the impossible was actually quite easy, even for a tech-impaired person like me. Re: Airport Question
Not trying to be contrary here, but I am very pleased with Linksys. I installed Airport Express in my iBook and I bought one of their 802.11g routers a while back and set up a wireless network in our house, talked through by great customer service - and it was a network between my Mac and my mom's PC, on opposite sides of the house. Both these procedures were surprisingly easy for someone as technically challenged as I am. Everything works great. I have had to call them again (I'm sure my mom's PC was the culprit) and they led me step-by-step to the solution to that problem. I couldn't ask for more from Linksys. Concetta I steer people away from Linksys, I've heard bad things about their reliability and features. D-Link seems okay as is Netgear. Oh boy do I agree here. We completely stopped carrying Linksys products this year due to their flaky wireless routers. -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: Software piracy
I know this discussion has veered off this, but here it is anyway (sorry, I'm on digest) It is permisible by the eBay rules, to contact you about a similar item being auctioned in eBay. It is NOT permisible to contact you to offer you a similar item by-passing eBay, (a private sale). Spam is not permitted on eBay. Some examples of spam include: • Unsolicited email offers to potential buyers for items that are the same or similar to items a member is bidding on or has bid on in the past [it is also transaction interference, a reportable violation] It is permisible to sell a computer with the OS only. The rules do not specify that the OS should be the original one for the computer. It is NOT permisible to include other software, like M$ Office, Adobe Photoshop, etc., if you advertise it, your auction will be cancelled, even if you include the erase disk clause. The following are examples of items that may not be listed on eBay: • Backup or archival copies of software programs • Software loaded onto a hard drive that is not being sold with the original media (disks, manuals, etc.) -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: further info re: password recognition on websites
Amber, I think they are two unrelated problems. The missing t scenario happened to me a couple of weeks ago with Live Help. The tech said to use all caps almost immediately, like he was used to this thing happening. I do not have the problem with Safari passwords that you describe. Concetta Hi Caleb, It's strange because all of this started happening about a week ago and has been getting progressively worse since. I have emptied the cache and reset Safari. I called my ISP and they told me that they felt it was a problem involving entering secure sites. I can't find any new Java updates. The other strange thing is that when I use eBay live help, I cannot type in lower case as the t key will not show up at all. I can only type in all caps to alleviate this problem. However, the eBay guy told me this is not uncommon with Mac users. Thanks for your suggestions ! Amber -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and...
