Pismo Troubles - Blown Power Card??
I had installed a different hard drive in my Pismo 500, After I got it back together, it would not boot. So, I put back the old drive and it will boot with AC power but not on battery alone. I have two good batteries. Both show full charge on the battery - four lights and worked fine before I started mucking around in the Pismo's guts. It does not recognize either battery when they are plugged in and it does not recognize the presence of an Airport card. The card is known good as working in my Sawtooth. When it boots on AC, I get the message that the system clock is wrong and may cause problems. After I set the time everything seems to look fine except no Airport or batteries. It won't hold the time from one startup to the next if the AC is disconnected in between startups. The PRam battery shows 5-6 volts on my multimeter. I don't know what it should be. I tried zapping the pram while running on AC, but no change. I used the pbfixit.com disassembly guide to take the Pismo down to it's major parts and back together again. I can get it to start booting from just a battery after everything is disconnected and reconnected, but it shuts down a couple of seconds after I get the silver apple screen in OS X. I have to pull the battery and briefly unplug the pram battery to get it to boot from the battery again. What did I break? -- Dan -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: GPS/Garmin Stuff
For cables, dongles, adapters, and other gps software for connecting GPS things to Macs, try this site: http://www.gpsy.com/index.html I used a Garmin Etrex gps feeding position data to DeLorme Street Atlas software running on a Pismo while I hauled my fifth wheel trailer around. Worked just fine. Please, don't take this as Mac bashing. I'm a Mac geek clear through to the bone. BUT, I switched to a pc laptop because the Street Atlas software is NEVER going to be updated for Macs and the pc version of Street Atlas has more features than than the Mac version and is updated regularly. I wouldn't have switched just for the gps, but then I found that connecting to the internet through my Verizon cell phone is do-able on the pc but not my Pismo. So, I picked up a Sony laptop on ebay. Sony stuff is almost as good as Mac stuff, So, the pc gets used when I'm spending some winter months in the southwest. All the rest of the year it sits on a shelf, pining for the fjords of Gatesville. -- Dan -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: On the road again and again
I use my Pismo, a Garmin Etrex GPS, and DeLorme Street Atlas for navigation while my wife and I are traveling in our truck pulling a 5th wheel trailer. Slicker than deer guts on a door knob - as we say here in the almost Great White North of Michigan. The Pismo is secured to a home-made plywood desk/mount strapped to the seat/console between the driver and navigator. The mount supports the screen so it doesn't flop around and allows the Pismo to be pivoted so that the driver can also look at the screen. A couple of bucks worth of plywood, a few nuts and bolts and some bungee cord or rubber bands. If anyone is interested, I will send a couple of jpegs of my setup, if you email me. -- Dan Pennington Lansing, Michigan -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Good Deal Alert
G-Book Listers I've got a Pismo 500 that came with a 12 gig hard drive. I swapped out the 12 gig for a 40 gig drive and put the 12 gig into an external USB enclosure that I bought online for a fairly low price. It worked transferring all my stuff to the new drive, but very slowly. I had to use it to backup and reinstall all my stuff when I recently did a partitioning of the 40 gig drive to get ready to install OS X. Again very slow. Next time it won't be so slow. I bought a new FireWire enclosure for the old drive on eBay from this guy: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemitem=2056413320 $29 for the enclosure and $10 for shipping - seemed like a good deal to me. Got the box in the mail today. Took 5 minutes to put the 12 gig drive in the box, plug into a FW port on my Pismo, no software to load, and it popped right up on my desktop in OS X. I test transferred a large folder full of stuff to the internal hard drive and it seemed only a little slower than from one partition to another on the internal drive and amazingly faster than the USB transfer. If you are in need of an external 2.5 inch hard drive box, try this one. I think the guy on ebay has a handful of ads for these. I don't know him/her and I have no connection the business. Just passing on what I think is a good deal. -- Dan Pennington Lansing, Michigan 48910 -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... External Monitor with Pismo Closed
Is there a way on any control settings that I can run the Pismo without opening the unit? Jarrett On page 39 of the 'Setting Up Your PowerBook' manual that came with my Pismo, it says to leave the Pismo closed and use the power button on the external keyboard to boot the system. It works just fine on mine. Should on yours, too. -- Dan -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Screw Problem - Repost
Auto mechanics and machinists will apply a small glob of grease at the spot where the hole is to be drilled, to catch the chips so they DON'T contaminate other parts. -- Dan -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Screw problem
anyone has ideas on removing a screw with a worn-out head? Go to a good hardware store or an auto parts store and get a small 'easy out' and a drill bit to match. The easy out is a small wedge shaped screw with a reverse thread. You drill a small hole in the center of the phillips head 'X' on top of the screw and the easy out screws into the hole. The wedge shape quickly gets jammed in the hole and continued turning unscrews the damaged screw. Bring the laptop with you to show how small the screw is. Desktop Folder Troubles Solved
Thanks for the advice. I did what you suggested and it was good! I guess this was too simple and straight forward for me to come up with on my own. I was expecting some arcane machinations of the Desktop Folders using an old version of ResEdit or some other secret tool that I would have to beg from either Gamba or the Pickle. G3 Pismo Cooling and Desktop Use
I sold my iMac on eBay and bought Pismo 500. I got it so I could use one computer for both my at home desktop needs and on the road to do GPS and general portable stuff. At home it's connected to a 19 in. monitor, an external keyboard and mouse, and through a 4 port USB hub to a printer, a scanner, a pda cradle, and sometimes a camera. The iMac used to do the same stuff. I left it on all the time and put it to sleep when I wasn't sitting in front of it. I want to do the same with the Pismo. Now, the Pismo is setup to run with the case closed. Should I continue to do this or not? I've noticed that the bottom of the case gets hot when it's awake and doing stuff. It cools down some when it's asleep. I have it raised up from the desk surface sitting on two 1x1x10 in. pieces of wood, to allow air circulation under it. I'm thinking of building a small fan box for it to sit on. Or the idea just hit me to build a padded stand so the Pismo could stand on end with the cd-dvd drive pointing up. This would allow natural air flow around it. Is this necessary? There must be other people using them for regular desktop use, what are your thoughts/experience? BTW, so far I really like the Pismo 500. It takes up a lot less space than my iMac or previous tower macs. It feels generally as fast as the iMac 600 I had. Some things feel faster and some other things feel slower. I haven't done any tests and I don't plan to. It's like gas mileage. If it's good, so what? And if it's bad, I don't want to know about it.
