Re: Shiira

2006-02-01 Thread Dennis Reeder

I recently installed Shiira on a G4 1GHZ 14" ibook (1 gig ram) and
am quite please with the browsers speed. Very easy to import
bookmarks from Firefox. Has a nice clean look to it. Shiira will
definitely stay in the dock replacing Safari.

Re: VOIP Option

2005-09-15 Thread Dennis Reeder

I use SKYPE on my 14" G4 1 gig iBook.

I don't use an external mic or headset; tried them, they were annoying.

I merely use the built-in mic and speakers. Quality is better than
my Verizon account.

However I only have used it with other SKYPE members - never made a
call to a non-SKYPE account.

Memory issues in G4 iBook

2005-08-23 Thread Dennis Reeder
Hi. I have a 14" G4 1ghz ibook. This ibook came with 128mb soldered
on the board and one open slot. Installed a 1 gig memory stick in the
open available slot. Memory came from Omni Technologies. The memory
was purchased about 3+ months ago. Was running Panther when the new
memory was installed. Worked perfectly. Installed Tiger. Memory
continued to function perfectly.

The ibook is now running 10.4.2 with all of the current available
updates. Within the last couple of days it seems to be running
slowly. I am seeing the spinning beach ball way too often. Opened
About This Mac and was surprised to see that I only had 640 mb of
ram. Hmm. Pulled ram out and reinstalled it. Started up machine
and About This Mac says 1.128 Gig of ram. The ibook ran for about 4
minutes and then froze. It froze while running Firefox. Only other
app open was Mail. So I restarted the machine. Opened About This
Mac and I am back down to 640 mb of ram.

What gives?

Warranty has expired (it had expired when I bought it "new" from
MicroCenter) and there is no AppleCare. Long story, not worth
retelling.

here's that bcc quirk explained

2005-07-18 Thread Dennis Reeder

Harry:

I would like to see Mail and the address book work exactly the same
way it worked in Panther.

Yes, in Tiger I can start typing the recipients name in the bcc
panel. And yes the name will be completed. That's fine.

I can also drag and drop a name from my address book into the bcc
panel and that will work fine. Drag and drop works but it is
significantly slower than the method offered in Panther. And yes, I
use the bcc option a lot!

If I put the cursor in the "To" panel, mouse click and then open
address book, select a name, and mouse click again then that name
appears in the "To" panel. As it should.

But, in Panther I could place my cursor into the Bcc panel and do a
mouse click. Then I could open my address book and mouse click on a
name and that name would appear in the bcc panel. Simple. I could
select one name or several and they would all zip right into the bcc
panel.

It appears that I have lost that ability in Tiger (using 10.4.2 on a
G4 iBook).

Here's what happens in Tiger: Place cursor in bcc panel. Mouse
click. Open address book. Select name. Mouse click and voila the
name appears in the "To" panel NOT the "bcc" panel.

Hence the quirk or bug.

Three options available in Panther to get a name into the bcc panel.

Two options in Tiger to get a name into the bcc panel.

Yeah, I can still use the bcc function but it's not as elegant and/or
as simple as it was in Panther.

The choice is there, just not in Address Book. Do you see that little
box to the left of "Account"? It's a popup list that includes bcc as
well as Reply-to. Or, you can type Command-Option-B to toggle the bcc
field. Then start typing names and they will be completed, or drag to
the desired field.

How would you like to see it work?

Bcc quirk?

2005-07-16 Thread Dennis Reeder

maybe I am doing something wrong but...

I can't seem to get the Bcc window and the address book to cooperate.

They used to play together nicely in Panther but in Tiger (10.4.2)
they don't seem to want to talk to each other.

If I include a Bcc panel in an email message I am unable to get an
address into the panel.unless I drag it there.

If I click on the name in my address book then the name/address
appears in the "To:" panel instead of the "Bcc" panel.

Is this a bug or I am missing something very very simple?

replacement cd/cdr/dvd for a 14" G4 ibook

2005-05-30 Thread Dennis Reeder
Does anybody know if there is a difference between a MATSHITA CD-RW
CW-8123 and MATSHITA CD-RW CW-8123C?

I need to replace the optical drive in my 14" G4 iBook.

System profiler calls it a 8123. So far I have only been able to find
8123c units. The 8123c units appear to be black. I couldn't care less
about the color. But I am not sure if the color is the only difference
between the 8123 and an 8123C.

I guess I am assuming that this Panasonic is the only cd/cdr/dvd unit
that would work in my iBook. Am I wrong? Are all slimline slotloading
cd/cdr/dvd units pretty much the same and/or interchangeable?

Thanks

Denny

Re: replacing an optical drive in a G4 iBook

2005-04-18 Thread Dennis Reeder
Thanks for the info on MacResQ. I had checked them out earlier. All I
want is a new cd/cdr/dvd drive. The drive is available for $89.
Paying MacResQ and additional $229 is out of the question. I
understand there are a zillion screws and it is a tedious time
consuming project but I would like to try it myself. So, I am back to
my original query. If you have done this surgery perhaps you have some
tips. If not I will post my experience in about a week.

Avail yourself of the best deal in the world for replacing SuperDrives
(and lots of other stuff: HDs, LCDs, etc.). Go to PowerBookResQ (part
of MacResQ):
http://www.powerbookresq.com/
and check out this, and many other, deals:
PowerBookResQ 8x Dual-Layer SuperDrive 24 Hour Nationwide Full Service
Upgrade for All G4 PowerBooks and G4 iBooks $289.00
When my SuperDrive went Tango Uniform, I called everyone from Apple's
friendly tech-support (hello, Bangalore!), to our local friendly
AppleStore (replace a WHAT, dewd?), to my friendly local Apple VAR (is
that made by Macintosh? I think I've got some info buried here
somewhere...). Apple Tech HQ in Bangalore quoted me $800.00 WITHOUT the
drive. The saggers at the AppleStore quoted me $800.00 WITH the drive,
and the Apple VAR is still digging through a midden of Sinclair ZX-80s,
286s, and disco lights.
Somebody hipped me to PowerBookResQ (and NO, I'm not an employee,
investor, creditor, or groupie -- well *maybe* a groupie -- for
MacResQ), and I called them up. You can just do it online, but I had
questions... MANY questions. They told me it was a good idea to back up
any critical data, just in case, and I did. The very next day FedUp
delivered an extremely sturdy pizza box with lots of customizable foam
cutouts in it. I asked Mr. FedUp to tally a mo, popped my PBG4 in and
off he went (did I mention that this is all pre-paid shipping, included
in the price?). The next day I suffered through a whole day in the shop
without iTunes or the net, but the next morning the pizza box came back
with my PBG4, brand new Matsushita SuperDrive, and not a single piece
of data missing. This was last September, so I wasn't able to take
advantage of the dual-layer SD they're offering now, and it was
actually a little more expensive -- $320 or thereabouts -- back then.
Not a single hiccup since, and I (and YOU) get to keep the box, which
is unbelievably robust.
Considering the price of an Apple-firmware Dual Layer SuperDrive, this
is the no-brainer of the century.

replacing optical drive in G4 iBook?

2005-04-17 Thread Dennis Reeder
I have a 14" G4 ibook with a dead optical drive (slot loader
cd/cdr/dvd).

I have found sources for new drives and that are fairly
inexpensiveas in under $100.

Has anyone on list had experience replacing the drive? It looks like
its pretty labor/time intensive but doable.

Hoping to hear from someone with some actual hands-on experience so I
can get encouragement, warnings, tips etc.

Thanks!!!

Re: power adapter repairs

The yo-yo for my Pismo was starting to look dangerous. So in a
pre-emptive strike I wound about 7-8 inches of the cord back into the

a tube. Not pretty to look at but it works and is safe.

I've tried it. It is a pain in the neck, and probably not worth
spending time on. The yo-yo's are difficult (not impossible) to get
apart, and as the usual issue is the cord, you probably won't get
anywhere with repair attempts.

Pink screen

2005-03-14 Thread Dennis Reeder
I have a Pismo 500. Everything works just hunk dory. But I
occasionally get the 'pink screen'. Starts in the lower left hand
corner and in its worse case it stretches up about 2 inches into the
screen. Sort of fans out from the corner.

Does not matter if the Pismo is running on batteries (a 6600mAh 10.8v
Li-Ion) or if it is plugged in. Doesn't matter if its on my desk at
home or somewhere else. Does not appear on a fresh start up. Only
appears after the Pismo has been awakened from sleep mode.

Screen is fine. No missing pixels. I do have a Belkin 54g wireless
card inserted into the pc slot.

So what's the diagnosis? Will it get worse? Can it be repaired?
Expensive? DIY or best left to an Apple tech person?

Thanks for your help.

Laughed at this one. I grew up in Cleveland. I don't remember that

I swear to God this is a true story, and if anyone here grew up in
Cleveland
during the '60's and '70s and visited the Cleveland Zoo, they will
corroborate this story:

There was this Gorilla--can't remember it's name, but he was old--been
at
the Zoo for ages. Wasn't happy about it either, those days of cement
cells
and iron bars--no attempt to make a simulacrum of a natural
environment.
How did we know it was unhappy? He would eat his meal, then force
himself
to vomit. Then, before the horrified eyes of us children, he would
scoop up
his vomit and eat it again. He would do this again and again... The
real
horror was that I saw this ape as a 7 year old, and then years later,
when I
took a visiting friend to the zoo, the ape was still there, years
later,
lapping up it's own vomit.

You ever see that ape Al?

headphone jack problems on pismo

2004-05-11 Thread Dennis Reeder
At home my Pismo plays iTunes through a powered Labtec dual speaker/sub
woofer setup. I plug the speakers into the headphone jack on the
backside of the Pismo. Lately the connection has gotten sloppy.
Wiggle the plug around in the jack and the audio output is ok. Wiggle
it a little more and it cuts out. Wiggle it again and one speaker or
another works.

Is the problem:

a. a sloppy jack and nothings is making contact or...
b. a bad sound board?
Solution?

Thanks

Re: Dan K on master/slave

Thanks for the links. Nice photos and clear explanation on
installation.

Apple Profiler shows that the drive is indeed set up as Master. I have
discovered that if I start up and depress/hold the option key then I

But depress/hold the C key will not default the machine to the DVD/CD-R
drive. Odd but I guess that's no big deal. I can startup from the
DVD/CD-R drive via the option key. Thanks for your help.

installing new dvd/cd-r in Pismo

2004-03-04 Thread Dennis Reeder
I promised a report on my experiences in retiring the original LG
DVD/CD drive in my Pismo. Panther 10.3.2. The LG drive was still
functioning but seemed to have intermittent problems. In addition my
SmartDisk external FW burner died. Got some great tips from this list
and xlr8yourmac.com. I purchased a LiteOn LSC-24082K.
(24x24x24x+8xDVD-ROM). With shipping it came in at just under $100.
Installation (including the removal of the older LG drive) took less
than 5 minutes. Six tiny phillips head screws - PH0 or PH1.
Downloaded and installed Patchburn II. Slid new drive into bay and it
worked perfectly from the gitgo. Watched Saving Private Ryan. Burnt a
data and music cd using Toast 6. Everything went perfectly.

So what's not perfect? Of course the bezel on the the LiteOn drive
does not match the Pismo's sexy contours. But the fit is not as bad as
I expected. It is noticeable but only if you look at the fit closely.
Doesn't bother me in the least. I can't see how it would be possible
to install the original Apple faceplate onto the LiteOn drive.

Problems? I can't get the Pismo to start up from the new drive. Do I
need to toggle a master/slave switch?
Where is it?

Re: ENM info's

2004-02-28 Thread Dennis Reeder
Dan K: thanks for the link. VERY useful information. I ordered a
Lite-On LSC24082K (24x24x24x+8x) DVD-CDR. Price with shipping was
under $100. Expect to receive it next week. Once it is installed and
working I can post a brief report on the process.

Not a drive source, just EBM infos:

loose solder on AC/Sound board

2004-02-24 Thread Dennis Reeder
Laurent:

I have the same problem on my Pismo. So how difficult is it to get to
the AC/Sound board and resolder the connection? Tips, cautions,
warnings? Can I get to the board thru the keyboard or would I have to
crack open the Pismo case? Is that hard to do?
Tricky? Easy? Thanks.

I love my PowerBook, but recently I've been having problems with the
headphone jack. The male end of the cord doesn't seem to make a full,
snug connection. If I press on it, sometimes I'll get full sound.
Otherwise it goes in and out.
Any ideas? Suggestions? Preferably cheap or free, since I'm not working
right now.
Probably a loose solder on the AC/Sound board. It will probably get
worse
until you fix it.

minor quirks with panther on pismo

2004-02-18 Thread Dennis Reeder
I have installed 10.3.2 on my Pismo. Everything is working very
nicely. However, I have an occasional problem with iMail. Some, not
all, messages are displayed with a very difficult to read font. I am
guessing that somehow I screwed up something when I crammed a couple
zillion fonts into FontBook. And instead of using some generic font,
iMail is substituting Tolkien Bold Italic Condensed ;-) or some other
wacky looking font. Any clues how I might track down the problem?
Again, it doesn't occur on all the messages. It also occasionally
shows up in Safari on certain web pages.

Oh yeah, one other problem. If I start up in 10.3.2 with my Firewire
external hard drive attached I get an error message and am told to shut
down. Starts up perfectly if I disconnect the FW HD and reconnect it
after the start up.
Of course there is no problem if the Firewire has been designated as
the start up drive. Is this one of those things I have to live with
until 10.3.3+?

Re: Sleeves/Sleevecases

2003-06-15 Thread Dennis Reeder
I would also be interested in hearing from people using some of these
bags (BooqBag, Willow Designs, Waterfield, Bihn and Mareware) with a
Pismoor barring that, any Apple laptop.

I've got a Belkin Stone Street, which would probably work perfectly
with a 12" Crystal, but it's kinda boring looking. Certainly not
befitting the cool styling of a Pismo. I like the look/price of the
BooqBag PowerSleeve15. Anybody here using one with a Pismo. or
Lombard or Wallstreet? BTW the Stone Street is on sale now at
MicroCenter for $14.

Re: 12" Speed

2003-06-06 Thread Dennis Reeder
I initially found it a bit disturbing hearing that Apple would not
permit unhindered discussion of their products. However, on
reflection, the list belongs to Apple. Imagine a bulletin board
inside an Apple store where consumers can post messages. Why should
Apple (as a huge profitable powerful corporation) allow any
discussion to appear on that bulletin board that didn't enhance their
image and contribute to their bottom line? This is definitely not
Russia 1948! In the former USSR a capitalist firm such as Apple
would not be permitted to exist, not permitted to innovate, not
permitted to compete nor would individuals be permitted any
opportunity to criticize an industry. For crying out loud you are
complaining about a corporations right to manage its image. You
don't like it tough. Start your own company. Your freedom of speech
has not be infringed by an agency of the United States government.
Cries of censorship are out of line. You are absolutely free to
discuss/praise/criticize Apple, Microsoft, Ford Motor Company and
Joe's Carryout Store on your own list. Or this list. Or your very
own newspaper or e'zine. Why do you want to abridge Apple's freedom
to operate their business as they see fit? Your right to free
speech and assembly is guaranteed by the United States Consitution
not Apples papers of incorporation. Look, I love my Mac but I have
no illusions about Apple as a corporation. They want to make a
profit, as big a profit as possible. Good for them. I wish them all
the success in the world. Caveat emptor.

A threatening email??? That is absolutely ridiculous!
Who was it from exactly? Thats censorship for
crissakes! We are only free to discuss the PowerBooks'
STRENGTHS and NOT it's weaknesses? What is this?
Russia circa 1948??
I would seriously like to know who wrote it (what
department, or how it was signed)so I can put in some
sort of complaint. Not that I think it would do
anything but just on principle.
