RAM compatibility

2003-12-11 Thread Jacob Saariaho
I just inherited a slot loading iMac 350 MHz that I want to upgrade to
Panther. Question is, will the 128 MB DIMM that I took out of my 333
MHz G3 PowerBook work in it. - Jacob

Panther on Lomard

2003-12-10 Thread Jacob Saariaho
Finally got around to updating my Lombard to Panther. Went through
almost the entire installation when suddenly the screen when nuts, went
dark with jumping vertical and horizontal lines, never seen that
before. When I forced a shut down and restart the computer had a kernel
panic immediately. I've attempted three more times with almost the same
exact results, (one time the screen just went black). I've already
used the discs to install Panther on my iMac, so I'm reasonably sure
it's not a bad disc problem. Anybody have ideas or suggestions?

Took what advise there was to take. Zeroing all data took forever but
no luck.Took out my top DIMM and that seems to have done the trick, so
far. I do think I'm going to miss some of the fantastic, colorful,

should make a screensaver. Question is, once I'm done with the
installation can I just pop the DIMM back in place and go about my
business? - Jacob

However, I would disconnect everything, and if needed, remove one of
the RAM DIMMs (if you are running 2 256MB DIMMs). This sounds very
bizarre, as if something is causing the kernel to go berzerk and write
over part of the video driver. I would love to see some of the logs up
to this point, but probably not easily done.

iMovie expects to see the video camera at the built in Firewire

  From Apple (9/17/2003):

iMovie 2 requires the following:
A Macintosh computer with a 300 MHz or faster PowerPC G3 or G4

At least 64 MB of RAM (128 MB recommended)
A CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive
200 MB of available (unused) hard disk space (4 GB recommended; 5

A monitor that works with 800 x 600 pixel resolution and thousands of
colors (1024 x 768 pixel resolution and millions of colors
recommended)
Mac OS 9.0.4 or later
QuickTime 4.1.2 or later
FireWire 2.4 or later (FireWire Support and Enabler extensions)
A digital video (DV) device, such as a camcorder or deck, with a
FireWire, IEEE 1394, or i.LINK port
A 4-pin-to-6-pin FireWire cable (for use with DV camcorders)
Viewing Desktop Movies on a TV or VCR from your DV device requires
appropriate connection cables

Re: G3/Mac OS X Settlement

2003-10-28 Thread Jacob Saariaho
Look, I really appreciate all the corporate ass kissing and lawyer
bashing, but I just wanted to know what exactly is claimed in the
lawsuit? That Apple didn't offer support for G3 users? Falsely
advertised compatibility for computers that weren't and then didn't
offer refunds to customers who complained? It sounds as though a
significant number of people are asking for a refund on a product that
didn't work with their machines. As much as I like Apple, I don't think
they're infallible, and, as much as I distrust lawyers, they are around
for a reason and on occasion have been known to do some good.

thousand others) was offered a whole $1.50. The only winners in these
suits are the lawyers, always.

I received the full settlement report from the lawyers. As a mac

benefit the law offices that file more than the actually participants
since they get there cut from the over-all settlement amount, or
their high fees are paid on top of the settlement. These law offices
regularly seek ways to design a class action and then lobby for
participants.

I find this entire statement confusing, because (a.) I've never heard

Re: Giving up on Lombard OS X

2003-10-06 Thread Jacob Saariaho
I installed a TravelStar 30Gig HD and 512MB of Ram in my Lombard and
have been running Jaguar exclusively. I love it, but I've always found
computer speed to be a somewhat relative matter. What did I expect from
a 4 year old computer? And how much money did I spend on the machine.
Adding a FireWire card I've attached a DV camera and downloaded footage
into iMovie and edited a project with dissolves and fades and exported
it to quicktime. Was it fast? Not really, but it didn't take forever
either... and I wasn't sure it would be able to do it in the first
place. For a $1500 dollars more, could I get a faster machine? duh...
but for a cheap portable solution I think it's a fantastic machine for
running Jaguar.

Jacob

P.S. I should mention that I got the computer for free a couple of
months ago. If I had spent $2500 on it 4 years ago I probably would
have been saving my money towards a new AlBook by now, instead of
upgrading this one. But you know what they say about beggars and
chosers, and I assume that anyone trying to squeeze more life out of a
Lombard knows where they stand.

processing tasks it's fine. Can I run Photoshop on it . . . errr, yes,
but I wouldn't do it except on an emergency basis. Any intensive
number crunching, graphics rendering, etc., is best left to more
muscular machines. If you decide to persist in getting OS X on yours,
I'd definitely recommend upping the RAM to the maximum 512MB - that
alone makes a world of difference, and takes you out of the realm of
the 'painfully slow'. HTH.

Reply from Tom Meade:
I'll have to agree with Laurent's wisdom - you have to experience
it despite all the advice. For the brief time X ran on the Lombard
(333) it was fine. I run it on a 266 beige too and don't see it as
too slow considering it's a (Jan. '98) model friend. Oh, and add
swapping RAM and trying to install on the original 4GB drive to
the list of impossibilities - maybe it was too small?
From all helpful responses, I admit I'm tempted to try another drive -
but the guys at MCE told me they'd the same X problem with their
Lombo and it assuredly isn't the drive. (Hmmm - they were my drive
source - maybe it's their PB drive that's the problem). Any other
drive
suggestions? This is a $ gamble so I'd appreciate very low cost
options.
Otherwise maybe should just resign myself to 9.
Thanks very much, all.

Lombard Upgrades

2003-09-26 Thread Jacob Saariaho
Finished my upgrades last night.

I got a hand-me-down Lombard from a friend who was replacing it with a
15 TiBook. The screen was shattered and the battery was dead (I tried
every fix I could find online and from previous G-Book messages, so I'm
pretty sure it's really and truly dead). I grabbed a screen on eBay
(absolutely pristine) and bought everything else new from Other World
Computing so I could have warranties and some guarantee of quality and
replacement. I bought a BTI battery, a 30GB TravelStar Hard Drive, two
256MB RAM upgrades, and a FireWire Card. I downloaded PowerBook Medic's
instructional PDF and used it as a guide to all of the repairs. Once
the hardware was all in place I installed Jaguar, then I hooked into
the internet and installed every recommended upgrade. I ran iTunes and
checked out the Music Store. Then I attached my Canon Optura and
downloaded 5 minutes of digital video into iMovie, I split the clip,
added dissolves and then exported the clip to Quicktime. It's not the
fastest computer I've ever used, but for a $600 investment I'm ecstatic.

Now for the questions:

Someone suggested that I fully charge the battery and then let it fully
discharge in order to break it in. I was under the impression that a
Lithium Ion battery only had a certain amount of charge/recharge cycles
before it would start to wear down. Should I try to keep it at a full
charge as much as possible, or should I let it fully discharge on
occasion?

I've got the original 4GB drive leftover, I've heard you can turn them
into pretty effective FireWire portables. Has anyone done this, how
does it work?

How easy is it to go wireless with this model? Do they make an Airport
Card that's compatible? What kind of range can I expect?

Every ScreenSaver in Jaguar tops out my VRAM, does anyone know of a any
that will run smooth on a Lombard?

Has anyone upgraded to PowerLogix BlueChip G4 500 MHz CPU? What kind of
performance benefits can be expected from such an upgrade?

This email is now three times longer then I would have expected, maybe
I should have broken into multiple parts.

Re: Lombard Battery Memory

2003-09-23 Thread Jacob Saariaho
I was going to upgrade my HD to a 20GB 5400RPM IBM TravelStar but Other
World Computing was out of stock. I got impatient and went with with
30GB 4200RPM, was this a mistake? I'm hoping to get my Lombard up to
speed to at least work iMovie and maybe Final Cut Pro. I don't expect
it to cruise but I don't want it to crawl either. Has anyone attempted
the BlueChip G4 processor upgrade? It intrigues me, but for the price I
want some assurance of reliability.

try Apple's Battery Reset utility. It might not be completely dead,

2) I suggest 320MB as a minimum. 64MB barely held what I needed to do,
even under OS 9. I personally will be moving up to 512MB, but that can
wait.

I am actually in the process of making my stock 333Mhz Lombard into a
tweaked-out monster (I finished tweaking my 8600, so on to the
Lombard)... so if you want advice or tips on any Lombard upgrades, I

The Lombard currently has 64 K ram running on OS 8.6.

I expect to move to Jaguar and I run Word, Excel, Filemaker, Palm,
Outlook
Express and Explorer simultaneously.

Eventually I guess I'll need to max out the RAM (512?) but for now I
would
prefer to try to get by with one 256 chip due to cost.

Do I understand correctly that for 512 I'll need both a low and high
profile
chip if I add both? As the high profile is less expensive is there
any
reason I should not get that now and the low profile later? I could
stretch
and get both now if there was a good reason to but would prefer not
to have
to.

Any advice on the battery icon, where to get memory and how much I'll
need?

Thanks,

Ely

Re: Lombard Battery Memory

2003-09-22 Thread Jacob Saariaho
I'm in a similar situation myself, with a Lombard I got as a
hand-me-down. I just purchased both the high profile and low profile
256 chips from Otherworld Computing. With 128 MB my Lombard runs Jaguar
surprisingly well, but it is slow. I'm also replacing the hard drive
with a larger and faster one, apparently Jaguar uses virtual memory
automatically so a small slow drive bogs it down considerably. I'm
interested to hear what others have to say about your battery issues.
My battery is most definitely dead, but I'm also replacing my PRAM
battery because my computer doesn't like to keep the date if it's
unplugged for too long. Unfortunately, nobody seems to offer a new PRAM
battery, so I'm forced to get one on eBay.

Hello all,

This is my first query to this group, though I've been on the
powercomputing
list for a while. Thanks in advance for any advice you might offer.

Just got a G3 Lombard via ebay (no manual), plugged it in to check
it out
and discovered that the battery indicator next to the clock has an
red X
through it and on the control panel strip, when I click on the battery
icon,
the options are grayed out.

I unplugged it to see if the battery indicator would appear and the
unit
turned off and reset to 1904

Lombard upgrade

2003-09-19 Thread Jacob Saariaho
I inherited a G3 PowerBook G3 with a cracked screen and a dead battery.
I've already replaced the screen with an eBay purchase (good as new)
and now am looking to do a series of upgrades. I'm about to place an
order for a new battery, more RAM, a 20GB HD, and a firewire card from
Otherworld Computing. Before I do I was wondering if anybody had used
them and what their experience had been.
