daughtercard replacement

2004-06-07 Thread Jeff Greffe
Hello there !
Just before I will pop in another replacement cpu card, I just want to
make sure I will not fry it again due to another malfunction !

Now, as previously described, when I try to start up this pismo, I get
a grey screen, a spinup of the HD, and then stuck ...
I tried the firewire target mode to check the HD with another laptop,
HD seems ok.
I tried starting up from an install cd ... still the same as with the
HD.
I can get into OF ... tried resetting everything, no go ...

BUT, after trying all those things, the CPU and heat shield get really
hot ... would it be the case if there was a CPU card failure ? .. would
the CPU still try to work and get hot ?

Thanks
Jeff

No devices found ...

2004-05-21 Thread Jeff Greffe
Ok,
I got my hands on a Hardware Test CD ... (well, found it in my junk
pile ! I never used it before !)
To all test:

Airport No device found
Logic Board No device found
Mass Storage No device found
Memory No device found
Modem No device found
Video RAM No device found
Now, I was pretty sure that I needed a new processor daughtercard, but
shouldn't it find some stuff ??
When I click on details, I can see the RAM at 320Mb, the hard drive at
6 gigs ... and the video card, rage 128 at ... 0Mb !!
That's strange ? or the VRAM is also on the daughtercard ?

I also put it in Firewire target mode and can see the hard drive. ran
a test on it, looks good.

Also, before I put in another processor, I want to make sure because I
can smell some burned plastic coming out of the powerbook. Will I fry
another card if I put it like that ? Is there anything I can do to
check so I would not fry the replacement ?

Thanks !

Maybe the application you use on the CD needs a running processor in
order
to query the system for installed components? In any case, if you
need a new
processor daughtercard, does it mean the current one doesn't work? If
so,
how can you run the tests?

If you smell burned plastic, then there is almost certainly something
shorted out. Could be the AC/Sound board or the logicboard. It's hard
to
tell. That's the kind of things that only a skilled technician would
be able
to diagnose. You could check with PowerBookMedic I think in Toronto.
I think
they do troubleshooting for reasonable rates.

Re: Mac CD-RW Burners (For Powerbook G4?)

2004-05-18 Thread Jeff Greffe

You wrote about sites that describe how to make your own bracket and
I have spent 45 min trying to find one ... no luck !

Any idea where I could find this info ?
Thanks ,
Jeff
Actually there are lots of slot loading slim drives (Combos and
DVD-R/Ws),
but as JSH points out, the problem is the bracket for powerbooks that
shipped without a Combo. The aftermarket drives are smaller than the
original DVD and require said bracket. The companies that sell the
kit
charge an arm and a couple legs, but the installation is greatly
simplified.
There are sites that describe how to make your own bracket and save
some
cash. Should be noted that bare 4x DVD burners (the Matshita UJ-825)
cost a
lot less than companies' 1x or 2x burners with the kit (e.g. $260-is
vs.
$330-350). If you're handy with aluminum sheet, go for it. As JSH
points
out, the slot-loaders can also be fitted in Pismos. I've got a Matshita
UJ-815B in mine. Very cool looking, plus no worries re. making the
faceplate
fit.

This powerbook was bought for almost nothing, and I want to keep the
cost down ... it will probably serve as a webcam server, or for
crunching video files in no hurry, so it will be plugged in all the
time.

When I am on the road, I have my TiG4 ...
so I don't need a very good battery.

Re: PISMO main battery

2004-05-16 Thread Jeff Greffe
Directly from Apple support site:
The original PowerBook G3 Series has the ability to use two expansion
bay devices and run from the AC adapter with no main battery installed.
Note: The PowerBook G3 (Bronze keyboard)and PowerBook (FireWire) do
not have this capability.

So, Malcolm and Tom, you are saying that it is not true ?

When I build and test machines I almost never have a battery in them.
I am sure I must have built and run a Pismo without a battery in it,

Re: Help, a CD was swallowed

2004-05-15 Thread Jeff Greffe
From Apple own troubleshooting info:
If the drive does not eject discs, press the F12 key or, on original
PowerBook G4 computers, the manual eject button located on the side of
the slot. Holding down the trackpad button during startup should also
eject a disc.

So, try rebooting holding down the trackpad button, if that doesn't
work, the manual eject is completely to the right of the slot (small
enough to miss if you don't know it's there)

Hi List-
Yesterday I inserted a CD into the slot of my 15 Ti-book. It didn't
go in too smoothly and now wont come out. I don't see a mechanical
ejection hole or lever. I'm not familiar with slot loaders that much
except for an iMac that I had. That had the hole and another
mechanical device on the left and inside the slot.

I hope I don't have to take things apart to get the CD out. I tried
the eject button and holding the mouse button down. It starts to come
out and then clicks for a while then spins up again showing back up on
the desktop.

Any one have a solution besides using a band saw? Thanks for your help.

Pismo pram battery, DIY ?

2004-05-12 Thread Jeff Greffe
Hey there !

I was wondering if it could be possible to construct an homemade Pram
battery for my (still) dead powerbook (but working on it ...). It has
been sitting on a shelf for almost 2 years, not connected and no
battery in the bay, so it must be pretty dead now.

I looked on the net and ebay, prices are ranging from 10$ for a very
used one, to 100$ for a new one !!
and since I currently reside in Taiwan at the moment, my resources to
find one here are pretty limited and shipping would be prohibitive for
such a small item. Macs are not too popular around here !

So, what are the specs for that little battery ? I am sure there is
somebody that already tried this !

Thanks !

Jeff

No, I'm in Hualien, on the east coast ... I guess you have been to

Thanks for the info, I will look it up !

You could try Guang Wha Tsang Tswan which is the area at the start of
Pa Deh Rd. Million computer shops there. As you go up Pa De, when you
get to the overpass, there is a building on the right next to the
motorbike parking area. Try B2 or B3 in this building for parts.

Good luck.

Man !

Those pins are small !! you mean the 2 beige rectangles that click
together under the card ? I didn't think it was possible to bend that
! it almost looks like velcro ! :)

I'll check for any other pins too I guess ...

Thanks !

Re: defective pismo

2004-05-11 Thread Jeff Greffe
Lastest tries:

I'm trying to zap everything in Open Firmware ...
did the :
reset-nvram
set-defaults
reset-all
Still no go ...

When I try to shut down the computer from OF, it tells me:
erasing ff0 and some other numbers ...
ERROR erasing on nvram
I am not sure about the pram battery, the previous owner let it stand
on a shelf for over a year ... , would it affect my booting up if it's
dead ? I remember on my 8500, it would not boot the first couple of
time, then boot from accumulated energy !

I tried connecting an external VGA display, but the display goes into
sleep mode 2 seconds after hearing the chime.

defective pismo

2004-05-10 Thread Jeff Greffe
Hello there ! first time around here !

Not my first time with macs though ...
I got this dead pismo for a loaf of bread and started playing with it
...

No, at first, it would turn on at all .. tried a reset of the pmu .. no
go ... opened the case, looked at the RAM top and bottom, took the
extra one out, and great ! I got a chime on start up, hard drive spins
up (faulty RAM I guess) ... if I press option, I get access to
available boot disks, like the hard drive and CD.

But ... I am stuck at the opening gray screen ... no apple logo, no
question mark ...
Last time this happened to me, was with my G3 upgraded 8500, where the
G3 card was defective ... could it be the case here with the processor
card ? Is there a way to test the card, besides getting another one ?
:)

I had a 6100AV, a 8500, a clamshell iBook, now an original G4
PowerbookTi, but I am new to pismos ! so if you could share some of
your experiences with that machine, it would be very much appreciated.

Thanks and have a nice day !

Jeff

2004-01-27 Thread Jeff Greffe
Hello there !

Would it be possible to exchange or fit the motherboard of a Ti G4 867
into the frame of a 400 ?
What would be involved if it is indeed possible ?

Thanks !
