Re: Safari crashin' all the time!
On my new G4 1Ghz iBook, Safari has been crashing many times too, unexpectedly, with no error messages. Have had the window pop up to send a message to Apple describing the problem. I've sent in many of those messages in just the past week. Maybe there is a conflict with other applications? Even though I have 768MB of RAM, I've noticed that quite often there isn't much RAM memory left!! I usually run on the iBook: OSX 10.3.4, Safari, Webstractor, Internet Explorer 5.2.3, Mail, Preview, TextEdit, iTunes, URL-Manager Pro, AppleWorks, and sometimes iCab 2.9.8, and sometimes Classic at the same time. Is there any way to adjust memory on the G4 iBook, that might help? Or do I simply need to add the 1GB stick of RAM to max out the RAM at 1.25GB? On my old PowerMac 7300/500, I've had many applications open, and I only have 200MB of RAM. On the PM I run OS 9.1, Internet Explorer 5.1.7, iCab 2.9.7, Outlook Express 5.0.6, Eudora 5.1.1, MW 8.0, Reunion 6, and sometimes several small applications in addition to that, and still have plenty of memory left!! Sometimes I've found that my boys will have so many applications open at the same time (mostly games), that I am surprised the machine hasn't locked up!! Virtual Memory is set to 300MB, which seems to give me plenty of memory. Only time I really have serious memory problems is when I run RealPlayer, QuickTime, or SimpleImage on the PowerMac. The G4 iBook sure seems to be a memory hog!!! -- vjamacaddict G4 iBook, OSX 10.3.4 Panther From: Zoltan Batiz [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Safari crashin' all the time! Regards, Mike K The problem is that the 1 GHz G4 iBooks came with Panther 10.3.2 installed and they WILL NOT BOOT from a disk with anything less than OS 10.3.2. Its not a case of what operating system the Mac is running, but rather a case of what system must be on the utility CD in order for the iBook to boot from it. Therefore all of the utility CDs with previous systems to 10.3.2 on them, like DiskWarrior and most TechToolPro CDs (previous to version 4) will not boot the G4 iBooks. I am using the TinkerTool standalone application on my G4 iBook, OS X 10.3.4. When I set up TinkerTool, one of the boxes to check said that it would update the bookmarks without erasing the old ones. TinkerTool Importing Bookmarks
Thanks Tristan for the tip using TinkerTool. At least I have my bookmarks imported from IE. I finally figured out how to drag the bookmarks from the imported folders. Safari is very tricky with dragging the bookmarks and bookmark folders around. I have to actually drag the folders outside of the window and around to the side, or else they end up in the wrong folder. I already registered URL-Manager Pro. Haven't had a chance yet to give it a try though. I'm still reading through the 79 pages of manual carefully. On page 14 now. As for importing IE bookmarks, the option in TinkerTool (standalone application) does not automatically import IE bookmarks into Safari. Re: Network G4 iBook with PM 7300/500 ??
Thanks for your advice Bob. I will look into getting a hub. Now, to answer your first question. On my PowerMac 7300/500, I use OS 9.1 most of the time. Another question: I have the router set up to the PowerMac 7300/500, and was wondering, if I get a hub, can I have the PowerMac connected to the router, and also have the PowerMac networked with my iBook at the same time, so I don't need to continually disconnect the ethernet cable each time I was to network? That would really be great if I could just leave the two computers networked, and also have them both online at the same time through the router. Lithium Battery Article
Thanks Andre for the link to the article on Lithium Batteries http://www.batteryuniversity.com/parttwo-34.htm It looks like I will continue to remove the battery in my G4 iBook when connecting the AC, and will not allow the battery to completely discharge, whenever possible, and completely discharge every 30 charging cycles. I guess I'll have to change my charging habits for my cell phone as well. I've been allowing the battery in my cell phone to completely discharge about every other charging cycle. -- vjamacaddict 512Ke, SE, SE/30, Classic II, LC II, PB 540c, PM 7300/500, iBook G4 superdrive/bluetooth http://www.angelfire.com/ca2/VernAndrews/ From: invicta [EMAIL PROTECTED] Another bad influence appears to be the temperature. When the laptop is attached to the power adaptor and folding 24 hours a day the rear bottom part stays rather hot. Temperature seems to be a negative influence on the life of the battery. IMO there are only two choices; stop folding or remove the battery when the PB is used in desktop mode. Here is the lowdown I found on Lithium based batteries; http://www.batteryuniversity.com/parttwo-34.htm Greetings, Andre. -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... I was getting the Administration Warnings several months ago up until about several weeks ago. I kept responding as the message instructed, but the messages kept arriving daily for over one month. Transfer Bookmarks IE on G4 iBook???
How can I transfer my old bookmarks from Internet Explorer 5.0.6 on my PowerMac 7300/500 to my G4 iBook (Internet Explorer 5.2)? I tried simply copying (dragging) into the IE folder on the iBook, but the old bookmarks did not show (unless I double click on the old bookmarks file). But, I want the old bookmarks to actually show up in the Favorites Toolbar when I start IE, and also in the bookmarks list just like on the PowerMac. Any ideas on how to do this transfer? Wireless Routers - Old Computers?
Can the PB 540c do wireless? What about the PM 7300? I know the iBook G4 can do wireless. I didn't get the airport card or Bluetooth though. I know that I will regret not getting bluetooth!! From: Ken [EMAIL PROTECTED] If the 540 has a built in ethernet port, all you need is a router with at least three ports. Connect them all to the router, and go to town. You can find wired 10/100 routers with 4 built in ports for less than $40 or so. On a special sale, probably $20. Even wireless 10/100 routers with 4 ports are less than $50 or so.
