Re: Recording records/tapes - Choosing a sound card

2005-04-08 Thread Mark D. Chapman
All I have done so far is digitize old tapes
using the mic port and Audio Hijacks Pro.
Frankly, with the quality of those tapes not much
would have helped. I just wanted to be able to
listen to them on the computer.

However, I do have some records I would like to
digitize. Will any old sound card do? I am
thinking under $100 on the used market. Which
cards are better than others?

Thanks, Mark

Re: FinderPop like utility for OS X

2005-02-28 Thread Mark D. Chapman
Under OS X there used to be a utility called FinderPop, which among a
number of other things, set the contextual menu to pop up when you held
the mouse button down qithout moving it for a time.
FinderPop was never updated for OS X; does anyone know of anything that
does this for OS X?
I use Sidetrack on my laptop. In addition to its
primary purpose of turning the edges of your
trackpad into scroll areas it also allows you to
assign functions to the trackpad's four corners.
I use the four corners for expose, control-click
and hide all. A wonderful application.

Re: Printing and Wireless Connectivity

2005-02-05 Thread Mark D. Chapman
The connect light on the router or EtherPrint don't care about
protocols such as AppleTalk, they are just looking for a valid
Ethernet connection. If the light isn't coming on you have a
problem. Guessing that the router's switch is 10/100 there MAY be an
issue with the EtherPrint and 10/100 auto-sensing. Some older
10BaseT hardware doesn't work well with 10/100 gear, the auto-sensing
gets confused. Asante 10BaseT stuff in particular was prone to this.
However, IIRC the EtherPrint-3 was iMac vintage equipment meant to
link the old and the new. The iMacs had 10/100 so it should work.
The solution to the auto-sensing problem is to stick a 10BaseT hub
That is easy enough. I have an old hub sitting around that would do the job.

Re: Printing and Wireless Connectivity

2005-02-04 Thread Mark D. Chapman
Thank-you to everyone that responded.
Collectively your advice was very helpful. Here
is my initial problem and the solution.

Problem: I could connect wirelessly to the
internet or print to my old Laserwriter but not
both at the same time.

Solution:
New network configuration. DSL modem to WAN port
on wireless router, LAN port on wireless router
to LAN port on wired router, DHCP turned off on
wired router, IP address changed on wired router,
wired router rebooted.

I can now connect to the internet and print to my
LaserWriter wirelessly. I still don't know why
the wireless router doesn't connect with my
printer but with this setup it doesn't matter.

Absolutely wonderful. Thanks all, Mark.

Are you sure that the wireless router you're trying to use supports
AppleTalk? I'm not sure how the serial to Ethernet bridge works in details,
but I would imagine that when it gets to the bridge, the information is
embedded into AppleTalk over Ethernet packets. What kind of bridge are you
using?
That is a good question. I don't know if the
wireless router supports appletalk or not. It
does claim to be OSX compatible. Nonetheless, my
problem seems to be different from this. The
wireless router does not even recognize the
Bridge as a live Ethernet device (the connection
light does not come on). The bridge I am using is
a Dayna EtherPrint-3. I don't know anything about
it but will look it up on the internet.

Thanks for suggesting an avenue of research, Mark

Printing and Wireless Connectivity

2005-02-02 Thread Mark D. Chapman
I am having trouble with my network and I don't
even know what to call the problem I am having or
where to search for answers.

I have 3 devices I want to connect: a PowerBook
G4 using airport (10.3.7), a B&W G3 using an
Ethernet cable (10.2.8), and an Apple LaserWriter
4/600PS using a serial to Ethernet bridge. I am
using a SMC wireless router to connect them all
(SMC2804WBRP-G). Here is my problem:

1. If I plug the printer into the wireless router
the router does not recognize it and will not
route print jobs to it.
2. If I plug the printer into my non-wireless
router (SMC7004VBR) the printer is recognized and
I can send print jobs but it is not wireless.
3. If I chain the two routers together by
plugging one of the ports on the wireless router
into the Wan port of the non-wireless router I
can access the internet wirelessly but I can't
print.
4, If I chain the two routers together by
plugging one of the ports on the wireless router
into a Lan port on the non-wireless router I can
print but I can't access the internet wirelessly.

Clearly there is some funky network stuff going
on here but it is way out of my league. Any
suggestions? Where do I look for help?

I have the dlink one for my G3 Bronze p-book. Works fine!! I got a

Search on froogle for a lower prize, 55 sounds too high. Both of these

USB wireless adaptors

2004-12-29 Thread Mark D. Chapman
I am planning to by a USB wireless adaptor for my
iBook (500 Mhz, dual USB, 10.2.8). Will any
adaptor work or do I have to get one that
specifically works for the Mac?

I was in the store and they had an D-Link 802.11b
adaptor that says it works on a Mac for $55 CND
and a SMC 802.11b/g adaptor for $28 CND (product
# and websites below). I know I can't use g
speeds on the iBook but the SMC adaptor is
cheaper and might be nice to have for future
computer upgrades.

Re: File synch in OSX?

 Any suggestions on good tools?
Well, IMNSHO, I think that "File Synchronization" is the best, most
affordable and easiest to use tool but then, I'm the author!
I'm not the author and I agree. There are lots of other tools that
offer lots of other features. However, it is not at all clear that
they improve on synchronization and few of them are as intuitive as
File Synchronization and most of them cost a lot more.

My only complaint is that the icon in the dock looks a bit fuzzy :)

Check it out.

Are you trying to connect to the Internet using your iBook and then sharing
this connection with your B&W? I know it works for AirPort but I'm not sure
it works for dialup connections.
Yes that is what I am trying to do. Is there any reason why it would
work for one type of network connection and not another?

When you share using AirPort how do you set it up?

Palm III to iBook

2003-09-15 Thread Mark D. Chapman
I just purchased a refurbished Palm III. It works like new except it
came with no manuals and no cables. The manuals are not a problem but
I would like a cable so I can backup its memory to my iBook
periodically. The only cable I can find is $50 CND at Staples. There
must be a cheaper option. The device only cost $20 CND (including
taxes). It doesn't make sense to spend that much money on a cable.
Does anyone know of a cheap option for connecting a Palm III to USB
on my iBook?
Can I use the infrared receiver that comes with cordless mice and
keyboards to sync the palm III?
OT: If anyone knows of any good web resources on old Palms I would
happy to hear about those. Feel free to Email me off list about this
as it is not entirely Mac related.
Thanks, Mark

I think that one of the most useful reasons to run X11 is so that you
can run OpenOffice. This is a fairly well done, file compatible copy

Synchronizing Macs

2003-02-04 Thread Mark D. Chapman
I use both a dual USB icebook and a 7500 desktop (OS 8.1). I use them
both regularly and need to synchronize the data between the two
machines. When I moved to OS X on the iBook I discovered that there
was no free sychronization program.

While I may end up buying one (any suggestions?) I would rather use
the one on my 7500. My problem is that I can't get my 7500 to connect
to my iBook (it works fine the other way around). I can see the iBook
in the chooser, and I can enter a password to access it. However,
when I hit return it tells me that the connection has suddenly
dropped. Using TCP/IP fares no better.

What am I doing wrong? Any suggestions?

Defragmenting my iBook

2002-04-01 Thread Mark D. Chapman

Having observed the conversation about system file backups, I was
wondering if I could boot from my install CD, access my 7500 as a
server, and then run TechTool Pro on the 7500 to defragment my iBooks
hard drive with no ill effects.

I tried to make a boot CD to accomplish the same thing. However,
despite the computer recognizing it as having a valid system file I
cannot get the iBook to boot from it. And I don't actually own a CD
burner so it was not easy to try again.
