OS X.4 DVD on Wallstreet II

2005-06-13 Thread Michael Dolberry
I have been playing around with upgrading to X.4 on my
Wallstreets, using the new XPostFacto4. But I have run
into a snag.

I suspect that it is hopeless, but just wanted to
check.

Using the new XPostFacto 4, I can load the software
and recognize the DVD, even in OS 10.2. But when it
tries to load from the DVD at restart, it keeps
waiting for data, which the help site interprets as
"Not able to read the media".

I know that the DVD-decoder is not supposed to work in
OS X, but it appears to work in OS X.2. (I guess I
need to try to watch a movie and see.)

Does anyone have any further ideas or information, or
possibly a work-around which doesn't involve swapping
the drive? I can't try firewire mode. No firewire.

Just curious, before I tell the wife and teen, it's a
NO GO.

Shel

Dead modem on my Graphite base station

2004-12-01 Thread Michael Dolberry
Help.

I believe that I have a dead modem on my Graphite base
station, after a recent storm.

The wireless network works, and I tested the phone
line and it also works. But I cannot get out onto the
internet. And all 3 laptops at our house "hang" for a
minute after trying, before turning loose to accept
further input.

I have taken the Base station apart and cannot see any
burns or shorts. But I thought that I would submit
this to the "team" before trying to buy another modem
to replace this faulty one. Have I missed any other
options? (Short of turning this into a Star Trek
prop.)

Mike

CD-R drive for Wallstreet

2004-09-01 Thread Michael Dolberry
I have heard from a few sources that there might be a
way to exchange a CD module in an expansion bay drive
for a CD-R module.

Is this possible?

If so, what drive would I look for which would be
compatible with the expansion bay shell I have and can
anyone direct me to website which explains the
step-by-step procedures? (I have looked, but may be
missing the sites)

Thank you for your help. (I accidentally posted
someting similar to this on Swap List. How
embarrassing)

Best idea for dedicated print server?

2004-06-15 Thread Michael Dolberry
I need help with your opinion.

I need to find the least expensive way to network one
of my printers to be used on my wireless network.

I have an Epson, with USB, and a Lexmark, which is
supposed to directly network (more below).

My network consists of 3 laptops with wireless PC
cards, all using OS9. They connect to a graphite
(non-extreme) base station. The Lexmark is connected
by an ethernet hub to the airport. It can be seen by
the network, but never prints anything. Also connected
is an old Supermac, running the Epson in USB Printer
Sharing.

The Supermac barely remembers that it HAS hard drives
and is unreliable. Lately it cannot see its ethernet
card. I am giving up on it.

My hope is that someone can suggest a fairly
inexpensive solution that can allow me to make this
work.

What would be the cheapest laptop or desktop to take
the place of the C600? Can airport extreme work in
OS9? Does anyone have a suggestion as to why the
Lexmark can be seen, but not used? (Lexmark claims it
must be settings on the Airport. Imagine that?)

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

Mike

Re: Micro$lime vs. Apple

2004-05-03 Thread Michael Dolberry
According to my information, the Miata WAS designed
after the Spider, just as Windows WAS designed after
the Mac experience. (On topic, enough?)

Obviously you've never driven either. The Miata is a
blast to drive,
pure
and simple, while a Karmann-Ghia is slow, handles
poorly and makes all
the
wrong noises. I believe a better comparison would be
an Alfa Romeo
Spider,
which in addition to being fun to drive, is actually
good-looking as
well,
especially the 1979 and earlier without the black
plastic trunk cap.

Oh, to stay on-topic, my 12" PowerBook would fit
nicely in the small
area
behind the seats of either a Miata or an Alfa spider,
though I think it
would be happier in a shiney new Z4 than either.

Re: Help for networking neophite

2004-04-15 Thread Michael Dolberry
Thanks to everyone who has responded to questions over
the last few days, both on and off list.

No, I do not plan to sell any of my items if I am
unsuccessful at setting up my network, but thanks.

I now have a basic idea of networking from the
websites suggested.

Has anyone successfully set up a wireless network with
one of the RoamAbout cards from Wegener Media and an
Airport original (not Extreme) base station? I think
that I need to know any tips or suggestions to make it
work. Maybe which version of software to use and the
proper order to set up everything, so that the
software and hardware are seeing what they expect, in
order to setup their portion of the "train".

Any ideas?

Help for networking neophite

2004-04-12 Thread Michael Dolberry
HELP!

I knew trying to set up a wireless home network would
be a challenge, but I am drowning.

I have used macs for 18 years, but have never
progressed from the appletalk, serial cable
configuration. I'm not even sure that I have basic
ethernet figured out. Now I am trying to get into the
new century.

Here are the items I am trying to use:

Powerbook Wallstreet
Enterasys RoamAbout card
Apple Original Base station
Ethernet printer attached through a 5port hub.

The printer is configured and works from the USB port.

Is there a website, or a kind soul, which can run me,
step by step, through the proper procedures and the
proper order to get this going?

Of course I have read all the manuals and instructions
for these items, but they don't seem to help.

Thank you for your help.

Cardbus USB is missing on Wallstreet

2003-12-23 Thread Michael Dolberry
I have come to the end of my attempts to get the USB
card which came with my used WS to work with it. I
have done LOTS of research and reloaded drivers and
USB Card Support files, but nothing works.

The card shows on the desktop as USB Card, but does
not show up in the System Overview. (I am using OS9.1)

It does not give any options in the Chooser for USB.

I also have the DVD decoder card. I have taken it out,
moved the USB card to the lower slot; nothing works.

I am hoping that this is merely a case of my lack of
knowledge, and not a faulty card. Anyone have any
ideas, or previous experience with this sort of
problem?

Feel free to send ANY suggestions, even those I have
tried. I may not have done them in a proper manner, or order.
