Seems almost everyone, including me, gets caught by this. Symptoms - The
WallStreet works fine with a USB card whilst on mains power but freezes
up under battery power.

The solution is to turn off Allow processor cycling under Settings for
Battery, in Control Panels, Energy Saver, Advanced Settings. Now the USB
card should work fine. At least it did for me.

Have been following this thread with interest as I have a WallStreet II
and a recent, suddenly dead battery (no lights at all), that Battery
Reset cannot revive. When you insert the battery the WallStreet
recognises it as a battery for about a minute, then decides it can't
charge it and the menu bar and Mac OS 9 Control Strip indicator changes
to no battery installed. I could not boot into OF with a restart,
although I remember being in OF once in the distant past.

Following Mikael's post about shutting down first, I tried it and Open
Firmware came up first try :-) Unfortunately no change in my dead battery
(yet). Maybe it is really dead. Perhaps it is due to the fact I left the
computer unpowered for 3 months...

Up until 11 months ago I was using a Wallstreet II in a similar way
(266MHz, 192MB RAM, 20GB IBM TravelStar HDD, Mac OS 9.1). Using a RAM
disk for the browser cache files significantly speeded up web browsing. I
set it up as 5MB in size, which you might find to be a bit too small, but
I really needed the memory for other applications.

I kept virtual memory turned on and set it to 1MB more than the physical
memory (193MB), in line with Apple's recommendations for best
performance. This proved to be a very stable setup.

But in my quest for more speed, better graphics performance, USB,
FireWire support and improved battery life I upgraded to a 2nd hand
500MHz Pismo (from eBay) and have never looked back. The WallStreet may
run OS X but only just. The Pismo runs it like a champion.

The good news is that in the last 12 months Pismo prices seem to have
steadily fallen, so I would wholeheartedly recommend any WallStreet user
to consider making the upgrade.

As we are talking WallStreets here, don't forget the Apple Battery Reset
application (sorry, don't have the link handy).

This application has revived my WallStreet battery several times, when I
might otherwise have assumed the battery was dead (no longer holding any
charge).

I know that a few times I have run out of battery power completely and
probably the PRAM/backup battery has run out as well. The main battery
refuses to recharge until it is reset by Battery Reset. Maybe a sign of a
faulty power manager board (also quite common, it seems).

Worth a shot...

I assume you mean a Ethernet-LocalTalk bridge, not a printer network
interface card? You have anHP printer with no ethernet interface, just a
LocalTalk network connection? This setup doesn't work with a purely
serial printer.

There are several different devices that will bridge between Ethernet and
LocalTalk networks.

The one that I have had experience of is the Dayna Mini EtherPrint. It
works transparently. Just plug in an ethernet cable connected to your
network and a LocalTalk cable connected to your printer. The printer
appears in Chooser in Mac OS 9 or can be added using Print Center as a
AppleTalk printer in Mac OS X.

On eBay look under Macintosh for something like Etherprint or
Ethernet-LocalTalk bridge. Hope this helps

I managed to print to a Epson Stylus Color 850 from Jaguar, but also not
by using a USB-serial adapter. I bought on eBay a LocalTalk network
adapter for the Stylus Color 500 and a LocalTalk-Ethernet bridge box.
This, plus the Epson standard network print driver, gave me a network
printer accessible to all ethernet equipped Macs.

Having said that, the speed of the SC850 was not stellar and it has now
been consigned to the inkjet recycling centre in the sky, leaving me with
the Epson network i/f and a spare LocalTalk-Ethernet bridge.

I got acceptable performance since 10.1.5 - 10.2.5 on my almost stock
266MHz WallStreet, with only 192MB RAM and an IBM 20GB TravelStar HDD.

I forget which, but one of the following release added (some of) the
missing graphics acceleration for the WallStreet graphics chip, which
also helps.

But I succumbed to temptation a few months ago and got a 2nd hand Pismo -
with AirPort, USB and FireWire. The most important thing for OS X is the
video chip. My WallStreet flies in OS 8.1 - 9.2. It IS faster in OS 9
Finder than my Pismo running the OS X Finder.

The Pismo is so much more slimmer and lighter. Portability is important
to me. I am dreaming about a 12" G4 as my next PowerBook, provided my
eyesight holds up...

Re: Buying new Powerbook

2003-07-14 Thread Mike Turner
I have recently upgraded from a 266MHz WallStreet (192MB RAM) to a 500MHz
Pismo (640MB RAM).

This has allowed me to switch to OS X full time. On the WallStreet Mac OS
X was rock solid, but the video performance was just good enough to run
all the eye candy in the OS X Finder. I was booted in OS X only about 5%
of the time. For the Lombard, like the WallStreet, the hardware
acceleration in the graphics chip is not fully supported in OS X, so you
shouldn't expect too much in graphics performance if running OS X.

My expensive, WallStreet expansion bay hard drive has now been replaced
with a much cheaper FireWire external drive. You have got to love the
plug and play ease of FireWire over SCSI - no rebooting to add/remove the
drive. Of course, there is no FireWire on the Lombard.

I am now running OS X 99% of the time, wirelessly networked with an
internal Airport card - definitely a Wow factor to my non-Apple-loving
friends - Look, no wires!

The only downside has been a slight flaw my Pismo's LCD display, which
seems to be a manufacturing fault in a small percentage of Pismos - the
Pink Screen of Death. There is a slight pink area in the bottom left
corner of the screen, visible when viewing a window with a white
background. This is particularly annoying as I always seem to be looking
at the bottom left of the screen when reading emails (long digests such
as G-Books). If I turn the brightness down to preserve battery life, this
pink area extends to most of the display :-( As a consequence, the
battery life on my Pismo is only just over 2 hours in OS X because I am
always operating on full brightness. This is only a few minutes longer
than my WallStreet on battery power, running OS 9 at low brightness.

However, last week I had the need to use to use the WallStreet to boot OS
8.1 and some foreign OS 9 systems from my expansion bay drives. I was
surprised at how snappy OS 9 is on the WallStreet. It actually seemed
faster than the Pismo! Maybe because they were all uncluttered, vanilla
OS installs...

Other than this, the LCD on the Pismo is much brighter and sharper than
the WallStreet. The Pismo also comes with an OS X capable DVD drive,
whereas the WallStreet and Lombard DVD modules, if you have one, are not
supported in OS X.

I have kept my WallStreet now for 3 months, watching on eBay as its
secondhand value decreases. I can't bear to part with this trusty old
friend. (It's been that long that I've almost forgotten how to reset the
Power Management Unit on the Wall Street - the problem occurred when I
drained the batteries completely and was away from a mains adapter.)

The WallStreet may actually have better build quality - it feels more
rugged. But the Pismo has all the modern ports - FireWire, USB, 100BaseT
ethernet, Airport slot - the power to run OS X and it is a little slimmer
and lighter. I would definitely recommend the Pismo rather than pouring
money into upgrading a WallStreet.

But, if you do not need Mac OS X, the WallStreet is quite capable in its
stock configuration - just max the RAM and fit a larger hard drive. If
you are using apps like PhotoShop, I think that a Pismo is better value
than a WallStreet upgrade.

Just my tuppence... (2p is currently the 2nd smallest coin in the,
Euro-free, UK)

Re: Pismo Brightness Controls

2003-03-17 Thread Mike Turner
Strangely enough the brightness controls have started working again in OS
9 :-) Once I had got OS X installed they started working in OS X.

Unforunately, I don't know if was the OS 9.1 or 9.2 update or the OS X
install that fixed it. I didn't reset the PRAM or the power manager (if
it exists on the Pismo), but I had to cycle the power after OS X hung
running fsck a 2nd time (!). Nothing serious fortunately.

There is a the tell tale pink screen on startup and wake from sleep, but
only a small residual pink streak in the bottom left corner :-( I'm
praying that it doesn't get any worse...

Now to get the 9.2.2 and 10.2.4 updates...

Thanks for everyone's help.

Pink Screen of Death? [Was: Is the Pismo Trackpad button Noisy]

2003-03-15 Thread Mike Turner
Thanks for the replies on the trackpad button. I think I can live with
it... I can cope with with trackpad clicking, because my clumsy
fingers/hands are always unexpectedly clicking by accident:-(

Regards the brightness controls. I get nothing in OS 9.0/9.2, but when I
installed OS X Jaguar, the brightness buttons suddenly started working as
expected (in OS X!?)

Another thing I noticed almost straight away after waking from sleep was
a noticeable pink twinge down the left hand side of the display. After 15
seconds or so, it has almost completely disappeared. A quick search on
Google turned up the report in Macintouch that I had probably read a long
time ago - the dreaded Pismo Pink Screen of Death!

This report is not that conclusive, many people got their LCD replaced
under AppleCare, but it is not obvious if this is really the sign of a
failing LCD/backlight? Can anyone confirm if the symptoms are likely to
get worse and eventually lead to LCD failure? :-(

A bit of a bummer on an otherwise pristine Pismo :-( But I think I will
be retiring my WallStreet after all. i have got 512MB RAM on order from
Crucial already :-)

Is the Pismo Trackpad button Noisy?

2003-03-14 Thread Mike Turner
I have *just* got my "new" (from eBay) Pismo 500MHz :-)

I feel a little guilty, as my trusty WallStreet, with 2 1/2 years of
daily use, is mostly adequate for what I do (email, browsing, a little
programming).

The 1st impressions after booting up were not favourable! 2 things jumped
out at me - the trackpad button and the screen brightness controls.

The trackpad button is not only much stiffer than the WallStreet, it
makes an awfully loud click when you press it!!

If it wasn't for the better graphics, USB, FireWire, ability to play DVDs
and, hopefully, a better OS X experience I would go straight back to my
trusty WallStreet.

As there are obviously thousands of hours of Pismo experience on this
list, I thought I'd ask.

Is this normal behaviour for a lightly used Pismo trackpad button?
Is there any known way of quietening it (other than clicking it thousands
of times)?

Brightness controls on the keyboard don't work!
I was aware that the dedicated volume and brightness controls from the
WallStreet have been replaced by the function keys on the keyboard of the
Pismo. The volume and mute keys work just fine, bringing up the same old
volume display on the bottom of the screen. But the brightness keys (F1
and F2) don't apparently do anything at all! At the moment, the LCD
display is nice and bright, but I am used to reducing the brightness to
increase battery life. Is there something obvious I am missing? Is this a
sign that there is a fault with this Pismo?

Any other nuggets of wisdom relating specifically to Pismos would be
gratefully received. What other signs of trouble should I be on the look
out for? I am a WallStreet diehard, so I have some experience with
general PowerBook usage.

Thanks for any ideas.

For OS 8/9, try the excellent freeware control panel Shadow Keys from
Swiss developers Opus Software.

It reassigns the enter key to become another command key, as well as
allowing you to set a keystroke for forward delete. It usually recognises
your keyboard and makes the right suggestions. Excellent for the original
iMac/G3/G4 USB keyboards as well. I couldn't live without it :-)

Good to know that I was not the only person suffering from exactly this
problem :-)

It can be very embarrassing if you forget to take your mains adapter with
you, run down your 1st battery completely and then cannot reboot, even
though I inserted a full 2nd battery :-(
This has happened to me a few times. I think what happens is that I have
the Energy Saver control panel set to wake the machine early in the
morning to collect email on a dialup for my normal workday routine.
Unfortunately when I am travelling and the PowerBook is closed and not
required to collect mail. I guess it tries to wake up, finds the lid is
closed and is not able to go back to sleep. By the time I actually wake
up, the 1st battery is run down completely and my 2nd battery not in the
other bay, but in the computer case.

I will definitely investigate changing the PRAM battery, once I discover
where the PRAM actually is situated in the WallStreet/PDQ. My initial
Google and Sherlock searches didn't turn up anything definite about the
WallStreet PRAM. Anybody care to educate me?

Not at all. This was very valuable information to me :-)

Re: Wallstreet battery problem revisited

2002-07-02 Thread Mike Turner

Hi Karl

Have you tried the Battery Reset program? (provided by Apple especially
for the WallStreet model, it seems.) I think someone mentioned it before
in this thread, but I thought I'd reinforce the suggestion, as it has
proved invaluable to me.

I have a WallStreet 266MHz which I use every day and it sleeps most
nights. Every month or so it fails to wake from sleep and plays dead.
When I reset the PowerBook (fn + ctrl + shift + Power) it revives, given
another battery or the mains adapter. But the offending battery is always
completely drained and will NOT recharge. The Battery Reset program has
always brought the battery back to life. I still get 2 and a half hours
from each of my 2 batteries.

The general wisdom of this list points to a general weakness in the Power
Management board in the WallStreet. But I thought it might be worth
giving Battery Reset one more try.

If I ever get into this situation I think it will probably more
economical to "upgrade" to a 2nd hand Pismo than to get the repair done.
Keeping my fingers crossed...

Regards

Mike

Re: Startup Items Don't - " Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect"

2002-04-07 Thread Mike Turner

Looks like Multiple Users was not completely to blame. My mind turned
next to the possibilty of an extension clash.

Sure enough, once I started looking the answer was right in front of me.
The offending extension seems to be the " Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect"
extension. Once I disabled this (!), the Startup Items run every time,
regardless of whether I have Multiple Users switched on or not.

I am running Norton AntiVirus v6 and the Get Info details on the " Norton
AntiVirus Auto-Protect" extension are:
Version: 6.0.2 © 1990 - 1999 Symantec Corp.

I suppose this means that this version was released before Multiple Users
hit the scene.

Anybody else with Norton AntiVirus experience this Startup Items
strangeness?

Re: Startup Items Don't Run Reliably except with Multiple Users Turned On?

2002-04-05 Thread Mike Turner

Luis seems to have come up with something significant.

Once I enabled Multiple Users and turned it on, every time I restarted
the Startup Items executed fine. Previously the control panel and
extension were disabled. There is now just one User setup, the Owner.

If I turn Multiple Users off in the control panel, the old behaviour
returns - the Startup Items only rarely execute (?). I can't figure out
what triggers them to execute, but it only happens, on average, once
every 10 or so restarts. (And, no, I am not going to restart 10 times
just to check.)

But, I don't have total confidence in the Multiple Users feature. I have
experienced quite a few crashes on a G4 tower, whilst debugging code,
which never happened before Multiple Users was turned on. It is also nice
not to have break up the startup sequence. If I restart (due to a crash
or whatever) it is nice to be able to come back to a machine that is
ready to go again, rather than entering a password and waiting again.

Anybody else have any ideas why Startup Items won't start? Surely I am
not the only one to be using Startup Items with Multiple Users disabled?

Re: Startup Items Don't Run?

2002-04-04 Thread Mike Turner

The exact items in the Startup Items makes no difference. Even if there
is just a single application alias, the application does not run. So I
gues it has nothing to do with AppleScript at all.

Thanks for your reply any way.

Startup Items Don't Run?

2002-04-03 Thread Mike Turner

This minor annoyance has plagued me on and off for 6 months now on my
WallStreet, running OS 9.1. I don't know if it is PowerBook or general OS
related, but I thought I'd try this amazing list first.

I have 3 aliases in my Startup Items folder, but they do not get executed
every restart - only once every blue moon! I have just restarted 3 times
this afternoon and only once did any of the startup programs run. Does
anyone know what is going on and why?

I have done what I usually do in these uncomfortable moments - run Disk
First Aid, Norton Utilities and rebuild the Desktop file. All to no avail.

The Startup items are an alias to my email program, another to an
AppleScript that moves my RAM Disk away from the right edge of the screen
and the third alias to a time tracking program. All the aliases behave
correctly if I double-click them. The same behaviour (or lack of action)
occurs if I move 1 or 2 aliases out of the Startup Items folder.

This is not a life or death problem, but it is niggling away at me every
time I restart.

Anyone else experienced this and can put me out of my misery?

Thanks

Mike Turner
