Hard copy Lombard user's manual

2005-08-12 Thread PETE
Is the user manual (hard copy) for the Wallstreet
similar to the Lombard user manual (hard copy)? I'm
looking for a lombard's hard copy user manual but
since I have one for the Wallstreet I'm wondering if
it'll do.
TIA.
Pete.

Setting for a DVDRW

2005-08-07 Thread PETE
I'm in the process of buying a dvdrw for the Lombard
I'm putting together. The seller needs to know whether
she should set the drive as master or slave. I'm
wondering, should I not set the hd drive as the master
and the dvd drive as the slave? Your help will be
greatly appreciated. TIA.

Don't you need a DVD decorder card for the
Wallstreet to play DVD's? Mine plays dvd's cos it has
a decorder.

Re: Alternative browser

I did get
Wamcom build of Mozilla, 1.3.1, and I also went ahead

Thanks to everyone who chimed in.

I finally figured out what the problem is, after
spending some time on adobe reader forums. The problem
is with Netscape 7.02 not loading (PDViewer) plug-in.
Communicator 4.77 and Internet Exploder are now
downloading pdf files from the net with no problems.
How can I make netscape 7.02 to launch the PDViewer
plug-in whenever a pdf document is being downloaded?
There is a plug-in folder in the 7.02 folder and it
has the PDViewer plug-in, it just does not load during
downloads from the net.
Help somebody.
TIA.
Pete.

Re: Safari/Camino/non-IE browser problems?

2005-02-16 Thread Pete Gregory
I also have a lot of DNS issues even in IE, for a while half the sites=20
I want to visit it'll say it can't find the server, and I just have to=20
wait nutil it goes away...
It could be an issue with a proxy server or your ISP's DNS. Two or
three things possibilities to check:

1. Try using a different DNS - there are public DNS's out there.
for each site you have issues with, try checking their ip address first
e.g. (from terminal) dig www.apple.com
ask your isp for a list of their dns servers and try
dig [EMAIL PROTECTED] to check them out
you can also try dig www.apple.com +trace
to see where the issues may lie.

2. try going through a proxy server such as proxify.com Assuming you
can connect to the proxy, you can then determine if the issue is "your
end" or "their end".

if you have reliable access to somebody around (e.g. a work machine that
no one minds your using), see if you can use that as a proxy. EG I run
'squid' on a spare linux box at home so by using a ssh tunnel through,
it can act as a proxy server from outside.

3. Check on the reliability of your link by running (from terminal)
ping -c 100 -q www.mit.edu
(I picked on mit because they reply to traceroute & pings - apple doesn't)
After a while you should get a summary such as
PING www.mit.edu (18.7.22.83): 56 data bytes
--- www.mit.edu ping statistics ---
100 packets transmitted, 100 packets received, 0% packet loss
round-trip min/avg/max = 13.616/15.786/28.997 ms
If you see a lot of packets are dropped or severe latency, try
traceroute -q 8 !$
and see where the failures occur. This MAY show up a duff router etc
that your isp has. depending on your route, though some routers may
not reply to the ping so if it returns * * * * * * * * and later on
shows replies, you know it's not a problem.

Send me an email direct if you want more - I've probably bored the rest
of the list to death by now.

HTH
Pete.

BELKIN USB card in a wallstreet (BUSPORT MOBILE)

2005-02-06 Thread PETE
Several months ago I installed the above mentioned
card in my wallstreet. I followed the belkin
instrutions in setting up the card - installing
drivers etc...The USB icon shows up on the desk top.
I had asked this question before, in a different
format - i.e the HP portable printer for those who
remember.
The card came with a cable toggle that connects to
the card. It has two usb connections. Nothing
connected really works. Anybody familiar with belkin
usb PCMCIA? I need to have usb connection for this
powerbook.
TIA,
Pete.

This is the prevailing netscape homepage:
http://home.netscape.com/main.adp
I think the other one with apple is gone. That's what
I had but now it defaults to this one. I think I
heard, sometimes back, that apple was discontinuing
the apple netscape association.

Thanks Timothy. I did not even think about that
because in the past all the numbers were not affected
whenever I upgraded an OS - I upgraded the same
powerbook months ago from OS 8.6 to OS 9.2.2 (from a
quicksilver CD) and this did not happen. Anyway all's
well now.

Browser issues

2005-01-16 Thread PETE
 Hi listers,
I need your help
I noticed that my road worrior, powerbook
g3/300/384/OS 9.2.2, was running slowly and freezing
for periods of about a minute or more - sometimes
less. To say the least it was very frustrating. So I
had this bright idea (it seemed bright at the time)
why not reinstall 9.2.2. So I did a clean install. Now
I can't log on to the net using either netscape 7.02,
4.76, 4.79 or IE 5.1.7. The strange thing is that the
remote access connects without any problems. It's the
browsers that do not connect. I'm using all my
previous settings and just to make sure I rechecked
with verizon support. He advised me to call apple
since every setting is correct. Okay you bright people
out there surely one of you must know whats going on.
This is my road worrior and I hate to be only logged
on when I'm home.
TIA,
Pete.

Funny, but at times netscape 7.02 does that to me at

That is strange since I have various computers running
various OS's, 8.6,9.0.4, and 9.2.2. I use netscape
7.02 without problems at paypal. Sometimes at ebay it
kind of times out but if I turn off everything - dsl
modem, router and the computer it works again at ebay
without any problems. Mozilla and IE 5.1.7 never give
me problems at the ebay site or at paypal. However, I
will never use IE when I'm making financial
transuctions.

Re: OT-trouble with webpages loading

2005-01-06 Thread PETE
If you are running system 9.x get netscape 7.02 and it
will automatically import all your IE bookmarks, both
Mozilla 1.2.1 and Netscape did that on my classroom
computer running OS 9.2.2.
I use both browsers when at ebay or paypal and no
problem. If you like IE get IE 5.1.7.
I sent some links that should help get the neccessary
download sites.

Re: Ram in a Wallstreet

2005-01-02 Thread PETE
I have a wallstreet/300 running OS 9.2.2 and system
profiler does tells me the slots and sizes of the
installed ram. But then as others have already
mentioned your system profiler depends on which OS
you're running but all the OS's that run in a
wallstreet should give you both the slot position,
upper or lower, and size of each stick of ram

Re: Printer Port Adapter

2004-12-13 Thread PETE
I installed the printer drivers, installed the usb
card plus drivers, went to chooser and clicked on the
HP DeskJet 350 icon. On the right screen of the
chooser the only statement that appeared read 'select
a HP DeskJet:' this appeared above the dialog
box.Nothing appeared inside the box. (e.g. If I click
on the color SW Pro icon on the left dialog box what
appears on the right box is 'connect to:' then the
option given is 'Serial Port' ). What this means is
that I can't print using the usb printer since the
chooser is not giving me a choice in the right dialog
box. What am I doing wrong?

Connecting Hp portable printer, DeskJet 350 to a Wallstreet.

2004-12-04 Thread PETE
I have the above mentioned printer connected to my
Wallstreet via a printer cable connected to the USB
port. When I open up the chooser the printer appears
on the left side of the dialog box but nothing on the
right dialog box where it says 'choose an HP printer:'
I installed the drivers but there is no communication
between the Wallstreet and the printer. When the test
button on the printer is pressed it prints the test
page, so the printer works. What am I doing wrong? I
have been to the HP web site and has not gotten
anywhere really.
TIA.
Peter.

XCode / gcc optimization

2004-11-23 Thread Pete Gregory
Sorry if this is a liittle off topic. If it is, pointers in the right
direction greatfully appreciated

A while back I knocked up some math benchmarks on my trusty G3 Pismo
under Metrowerks CodeWarrior (a somewhat out of date(vanilla C) version
which came out for 603/604e era)... and was pleasantly surprised to see
it performed these tasks faster than a Win2000 laptop (1GHz P4) and Sun
Ultra60.

I've now upgraded to a G4/450 based Mac and purchased OSX which so far
is great. The old compiled code runs OK under classic. I tried
recompiling these benchmarks under gcc (& x-code) using the -O3 flag and
set up for a G4. The surprise is that these takes FIVE TIMES LONGER
when recompiled than the old code under classic.

Are there any suggestions to better optimization flags etc or other
(preferably free/cheap) compilers out there?

Bluetooth for Pismo / OS9?

2004-07-08 Thread Pete Gregory
Greetings,
I have just acquired a bluetooth gsm cellphone (Ericsson T610) and was
wondering if I could hook it up to my pismo. I've seen some
USB->Bluetooth adapters but not the information as to whether they have
Mac (pref OS9 & X) drivers.

Also, is there any cheap/free software for driving the phone/syncing etc?
If the answer is all OSX only, I may be getting that - currently
dithering over Panther now or Tiger next year. (And how to tell the
wife what happened to $120).
Thanks,
Pete.

2004-06-20 Thread Pete Gregory
Samantha enquired:
I have a 17" apple Multiscan monitor with the apple-style two-row plug,
that I'd love to hook up to my ibook, but I'm not sure it's possible.
The little video out cable that came with the ibook connects to a VGA
monitor--is there an adapter I could use to switch it to apple two-row?
Has anybody tried anything like this and what kind of results have you
had?
ISTR my pismo came with such an adapter - let me know if you're still
looking and I'll dig the box out of the basement and check further.

Pete.

Re: ...Panther Mail and SMTP servers...

2004-06-04 Thread Pete Gregory

Subject: ...Panther Mail and SMTP servers...
Date: Fri, 4 Jun 2004 08:26:05 -0700
On the WiFi net at
the Library I can receive mail from both accounts just fine but when I
send(and the Library says I should be able to) I get the message that
the SMTP server smtp.mac.mail can not be used, would I like to
Jim,
I'm confused about the .mac bit, but the important bit to check out is
if your smtp is working fine. My guess is that you're normally using
mindspring and hence sending to a server such as mail.mindspring.com.

Problem #1 is most ISP's disable smtp for traffic not originating nor
terminating in their domain for anti-spam reasons. Further, it is not
impossible that the library has also disabled outgoing smtp.

The easy way to check the latter is to open a terminal window and try
telnet 25
if it times out, you know it is being blocked somewhere. If not, try
the following commands
helo there
mail from: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
rcpt to:
data
Subject: Just Testing

.

This will indicate if you can send or not. If you get an error message
after the rcpt to: command, that means the isp is not relaying.

If any of the above fail, then the easy workarounds are as follows:
- Can you use a webmail service?
- Can you (perhaps through vpn/ssh etc) use a work or similar account
from the 'inside'
- Services such as fastmail.fm (min $14 for member access) will let you
use their smtp server with authentication. Fastmail also lets you use
other ports if 25 is blocked.

Re: [OT] Problem accessing email behind firewall

2004-02-29 Thread Pete Gregory
Laurent proclaimed:

Thanks, Gavin! I tried getting to the IP addresses directly, but they must
have done something because they are also blocked.
I'll see if I could use VNC, but I doubt it will work. If you know Fannie
Mae, you understand that they are very sensitive to the outside world and
nothing, absolutely nothing should disrupt their activities. I think that's
why they are so picky about outside Internet access...
-Laurent.
All is not (yet) lost. I'm not 100% sure on this since I run linux & OpenBSD @ home - not OS X yet... They should be very similar.

You can move ssh to a different port from the default 22 (or an additional port to) -either by changing the sshd startup script or
editing /etc/ssh/sshd_config.

Then, for example, ssh -p newPort -l myloginname -L 8025:localhost:25 myTunnelBox -L 8080:localhost:3128 myTunnelBox etc etc

What this does is as most eloquently described before by Gavin. You should be able to find one free port (e.g. 21 shouldn't be open
to the wide world as ftp isn't secure). If feeling paranoid, you can can set your firewall to ONLY accept incoming on port 21 for
ssh if coming from certain 'known valid' ip addresses. Port 3128 is for web access where you like if you are running a proxy such
as 'squid'. By setting your browser to use a proxy for non-internal webpages (localhost:8080), you effectively 'pull' the web pages
from the external server and then send them encrypted through the ssh tunnel to you on the 'inside'. -C may also improve throughput.

The best ports to pick after 22 is in the available non-privileged range. There are ways of finding open ports (e.g. nmap) - talk
to you offline if you want more help.

A warning about verizon - I was with them for a while but they changed their Terms&Conditions - see
http://www.verizon.net/policies/vzcom/tos_popup.asp
3.6 If you subscribe to DSL Service:
...
   E. You may not use the DSL Service to host any type of server personal or commercial in nature

Also when I was using my home dsl to serve, the outgoing bandwidth was poor (128kb/s)... just my (equally OT) 2c.

Cheers,
Pete.

Taxing times

2004-02-02 Thread Pete Gregory
Sorry if this is not 100% related to powerbooks (I have a pismo, though).

As a recent resident of the USA, the time is coming again to do that
harrowing task known as 'tax return'. Last year I paid an exorbitant
sum to get it done by a "professional" who seemed to just type the
numbers into a PC and spit out the returns.

Are there any recommendations for any Macintosh (OS9) software to do the
same task. There seems to be a wealth of stuff for the PC with pricing
all over the place? Does it do both federal and state (Massachusetts)?

TIA,
Pete.

Re: Pismo DVD drive not recognizing CD's

2003-07-15 Thread Pete Gregory

Subject: Re: Pismo DVD drive not recognizing CD's

From: James Rohde <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Message-Id: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
[snip]
Pete, you possibly have the dreaded 'LG dying' problem (which I had
shortly before my original warranty ran out). The LG model of drive has
documented problems with failing way too soon (the Matsushita drive
doesn't appear to have the problem). I had similar symptoms when my drive
started going south.

Well, I never had applecare so I guess it's going to be an expensive fix.

Looking on the web, it appears the replacement is $130 up. OTOH I've
seen two combo drives for $200 & $300
(http://www.wegenermedia.com/pismocombo.htm) and I saw an article on
http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/PB_G3/oem_combo_drives/build_guide/build_combo_drive.html
for using a Matsushita UJDA 710 drive as an alternative (about $100 on
ebay) tempting.

Has anyone any other suggestions or thoughts on this matter? And how do
I explain it to the wife?

Thanks
Pete another LG victim.

Pismo DVD drive not recognising CD's

2003-07-14 Thread Pete Gregory
Any bright ideas as what the problem is and how to fix it?

My 3 year old pismo (OS 9.22, 382 Mb Ram, stock 20Mb HD) has stopped
recognising CD's. I put a CD or CD-R in the drive, close the unit, the
drive spins up, spins down about a second later and that's it. Checking
in sys profiler shows 'no media' and the eject button on the unit still
works. I've tried with a few CD's, pulled the drive out and reseated it
but no joy. However, it happily reads DVDs with no problems.

Model is LG (DVD-ROM DRN8080B rev LAB8) with driver version 1.4.7.

I have not loaded any new software or tweaked the hardware for a long time.

My workaround of using fetch to copy from a linux box over the network
is rather painful and only works with mac disks.

Suggestions gratefully appreciated.
Pete.

Re: transferring files to Wintel over home network?

2003-06-28 Thread Pete Gregory

Hello all
I want to transfer some files from my Lombard (OS 9.2.2) to my Thinkpad
560X (WIN98) via my home network (Linksys BEFW11SF wireless).
I can plug both machines into ethernet ports so I don't have to get a
second wireless card.
I've had to tinker with the wintel boxes to get them to see each other
on the network, how can I make them visible to the Lombard (or vice-versa)?

The easy way is to dispose of the Wintel boxes and replace them with Macs. :-)

Alternatively under OS9 and earlier, you can run 'Fetch' and enable FTP server

(I have found it painfully slow). I prefer filezilla on the PC as a ftp client.

You can also run an ftp server on the PC - my approach is to use cygwin (it's a form

of unix emulator that comes with lots of unix type utils including ftpd) - in which

case you can use fetch to be the mac ftp client.

There is a commercial product out called 'Dave' by
http://www.thursby.com/ which is supposed to put Macs on a PC network.
They will let you download an evaluation version.

Even better, load up freebsd/linux on the PC and make it run as a ftp
server.

Pete.

Some Pismo Questions

2003-01-01 Thread Pete Gregory
Hi,

Sorry if this has been asked before but I'm one of those very few ;-) people who is
contemplating upgrading the faithful pismo -
currently with 384Mb Ram and 20Gb hard disk running OS 9.2.2
Jaguar is tempting because it might make some things easier - especially networking to
the linux box but not a big deal. Before
even thinking of OSX, though, I suspect RAM and possibly disk upgrades are de rigour.

I notice the main dealers sell 512Mb SODIMS for the PB but the official apple spec
(http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=43126) states that Max is 256 per slot
i.e. 512 Mb.Does it 'just work' or are
there some caveats? Also can one just stuff in a bigger disk? (I remember the old
days of Mac IIsi and PPC6100/60) where 'non
apple' disks weren't recognized by the apple tools.

I noticed some people were discussing reliability etc. My 2cents / 0.01905 euro: My
Pismo is 2 1/2 years old and used to travel a
lot (on the road every other week) and often shuttled between work and home on the
back of a montain bike. So fa, it's been great.
A slightly bigger screen (resolution) would be nice. it compares favorably with the
PC laptop (work provided) which is falling
apart after 6 months and weights considerably more. Also the mac ergomics are streets
ahead.

One minor niggle is on the PC (and ones I've used since the mid 90's), you could tap
on the trackpad to mouse click - do the newer
iBooks/PowerBooks support this?

TIA
Pete.
