Re: Synchronizing Treo 650

2005-06-19 Thread Rowan, Michael

For those that have exchange servers at work, I highly recommend Good
Technology's mail stuff. Runs on the 650, 600 or the old blackberry devices.
Its much better than versamail.

I guess its my years of blackberrying but I can thumb type at about 50 wpm...
Lol about graffiti ;-)

Thanks, Sionnach.

The main piece we had trouble with was VersaMail.

Is that different than the built-in Mail application? So far at
least, I have no plans to use the Treo for email. If I did, I'd have
to get a separate email address that only a few people have.
Otherwise, I'd get inundated with hundreds of email a day (I'm on
quite a few lists).

My wife wanted to be able to send/recieve email.

Well, VersaMail comes wiht your Palm... sortof.

Verizon recompiled Palm's install CD to make it their
own and in doing so left out a LOT of the
functionality for Macs. In fact, their own
instruction manual (Verizon's) says Mac users will
have to install VersaMail from the CD... But try to
do that from a Mac... you can't. They didn't
incorporate a Mac installer. I had to take my wifes
Treo 650 upstairs, hook it up to my PC, pop the disk
in and install VersaMail from there. After that, it
would sync and work fine from her iBook.

I don't have a PC, but I do have Virtual PC 6.x. I guess if I decide
to try VersaMail, I could see if I could install that way.

I was able to get mail to recieve, but not send.
After quickly looking at the unit, I determined it was
becasue she was sending over verizon's network, so our
home ISPs SMTP Server setting wasn't working.
Solution... I needed a SMTP server from Verizon.

Called Verizon support... first mistake, my wife
tells the lady she's running this on a Mac. Tech
tells her this isn't supported on a Mac. (Verizon Doc
says otherwise). She tried to explain that her
problem was irrelevant to whateer operating system it
was running on, but tech wasn't getting it... She
finally gave me the phone in disgust.

I finally determined that not only did the tech not
know mac, they didn't know the Treo 650 either... only
the 600 (which runs a different version of Versamail
with far less features.) After holding the techs hand
and leading her through all the settings in Versamail
(wait, isn;t that her job??) She finally gives me the
SMTP server name I need. Of course... she gave it too
me wrong. I had to figure that out for myself. But
all in all, i got it working.

I guess I may come to you if I get to the point where I need the SMTP
server. Is the default email address [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Since the, my wife LOVES her Treo650. I'm even
impressed with it, although I'm a graffiti guy and the
650 doesn't allow graffiti... just input from the
mini-keyboard, which my fat fingers don't like :-)

I've almost given up on thumb typing, even though the 650 supposedly
has the sensitivity to distinguish between a fully pressed key and an
accidentally pressed one. I do better holding the Treo in one hand
and typing with the index finger of the other. I also understand that
there's a third-party handwriting recognition program that's better
than Graffitti (in that it lets you train it rather than requiring
you to use a pre-determined method.

I'll give the keyboard some more time before I try that out though.
It's only been a couple of days.

Thanks.

I'll reply to you back channel about the Kyocera.

Harry Corsover

Lawrence, is wireless an option?

Maybe some of our yank listas could advise on the availability of free
wireless in the States. You may need to wardrive or warwalk or
warlatte!

Good luck.

I'm really sorry if anybody gets offended by this but Office v.X was
pretty good and Office 2004 is VERY GOOD. Entourage is a totally
integrated
application: mail, calendar, contacts and tons of options on how to
use
everything to the max. I might add that there is a conduit included to
sync
Entourage with your PDA.
While I still like Apple's Mail App and iCal and Address Book (all work
really well). Entourage has them all in one.
Addressing the issue of MS no longer supporting Internet Explorerso
what! Safari rocks! MS knows that and methinks it's the reason that
they
aren't moving on with IE.
As for Office, nothing compares to it. Certainly not AppleWorks! And
I
know somebody is going to chime in about 'Open Office' or whatever it's
called.it's slow and clumsy.
Usually the people who start bashing a high end app suite are the ones
who
don't have the $$$ to buy itor can't steal it!
Are we going to start bashing Photoshop next?

This email response is written using Entourage 2004 on a G4 iBook.
lol...relax and calm down, we are not dealing with life and death
issues here. Use what you like and what works best for your needs.
Health and happiness to all, including Entourage users this holiday

Re: Transfer of saved e-mails/recommended e-mail app?

2004-12-21 Thread Rowan, Michael

I use it as well, although its performance is somewhat annoying (we are an
exchange site) -- its update methodology with respect to exchange is annoying.
But the integration with exhange is undeniably rocking cool. I've never used
apple mail, but did the pc to mac conversion about a year ago -- ms office for
the mac made this possible (in a windows shop).

Go entourage.

I agree Entourage 2004 rocks. The project center is awesome. The calendar,
project center, and Notes all work together seamlessly. I won't support
Apple mail on my Network. I tell everyone if they want me to support their
Email account they need to use Entourage. Apple needs to integrate iCal and
the Address book into Mail to make it a competitive application.

I personally love Entourage. Mail is lacking some very important features.
Like the ability to read a thread and after deleting having it go on to the
next message without opening a new window.

17 Powerbook failure

2004-11-21 Thread Rowan, Michael

Hey guys,

I have a 17 Powerbook which isn't working. I only converted over to macs last
year, so am short on experience diagnosing the problems. When I try to power
up it sounds like the drive starts to spin up and doesn't. The sound is coming
from the top left corner -- by the power cord, so I'm not sure if its the drive
of the power unit/fan. It immediatly stops and nada after that.

I was gonna open back up -- I installed and uninstalled a touch keyboard a
while back, but didn't pay enough attention to the layout at the time... Its
been a while since the uninstall, so I'm thinking its unrelated but, I'm
thinking I probably voided any warranty on it.

Any ideas from this list? I will start searching when I get to work -- no
spare computer with me to look online today... (just my blackberry ;-)

Thanks for anything...

Subject:A completely different iPod question (OT)

Hi list-

I have a 12 Al-book on which I have an extensive iTunes library. I
just purchased a used iPod which may come with some music that I want
to get rid of. In fact, I would like to set the iPod to its original
settings, clean of all personalization, as it comes from the store. Is
there an easy way to return it to this state? If I do this will it want
to be registered, which I'd have no problems doing, or is that not
something to do. Does anyone have any source of info on setting up a
used iPod? I wouldn't think that Apple has this info but I might be
wrong.

Thanks in advance for any help.
