Wallstreet Battery Question

2004-08-29 Thread Stephen Kerney
I'm having a problem with NewerTech's PowerBook G3 WallStreet Li-Ion
Battery (NWTBAPLLIWS) from OWC. Works great for about 2 weeks (charges,
lasts about 3 hours (according to time remaining), takes a charge fine when
plugged in (e.g., goes to 100%)) then won't take a charge. I'm on my 2nd
one with same results. My 5 1/2 year old original apple battery still
charges (but only lasts an hour or so) so I doubt its the WS. Anyone else
have this problem? I've reset the PMU twice, no change. I've tried both
slots and one battery at a time. No change. OEM charges, new on doesn't.

I'm about to send it back and ask for something different.

Steve

Wallstreet II Battery not charging

2004-05-21 Thread Stephen Kerney
Several weeks ago I bought my 2nd Li-Ion battery, a 4500mAh, for my
Wallstreet 'cuz the oomph in my original wasn't what it used to be - about
an hour (not bad for a 5 year old battery IMO).

Just last week the battery duo stopped charging. 1st symptom was the time
remaining indicator always read "Calculating" whether a/c connected or not
though percent charged would display at 74%.

I booted from OS 10.2.8 down to OS9 and nuked 'em with Battery Reset.
Result - 2 uncharged batteries that wouldn't charge when both were in the
bays at the same time. I then tried to just charge the old one and it
worked. Time remaining with ac unplugged indicates 2:45!

However, my new battery won't charge. I was thinking power mgmt unit until
the old one charged but maybe the requirement for a 4500mAh is just too much
for my 5 year old power board. Maybe I've got a bad battery. I'm not sure
what to do next.

Any suggestions?

Thanks. Steve Kerney

OT - Spoof Warning

2004-05-05 Thread Stephen Kerney
Buyer Beware (sorry in advance for the length): I received an email Monday
I thought was from PayPal ("[EMAIL PROTECTED]" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>) asking
me, by name, to confirm my account info since it'd been "a relatively long
time since" I'd last logged into PayPal. It listed the last 4 digits of my
credit card on file with PayPal and included the correct expiration date.
When I clicked on the "Click here" link and entered my email addr and PayPal
P/W, I decided to update my card info since I'd gotten a new one recently
with a later expiration date and a new Card Verification Number (3 digit
code on back of card).

Once I hit submit, I took a peak at the URL to watch it update and I noticed
the "s" was missing from the address I incorrectly assumed was secure (e.g.,
https://...). Before I could hit cancel the form was submitted.

I contacted PayPal that day making inquiry into the post and the security
(or lack thereof) of the web site I'd given my updated credit card info to.
I including the link I'd gone to. They replied the next day that if the
post started with "Dear First_Name Last_Name" it was definitely from PayPal.
Since they did not answer my question regarding http:// vs. https:// I
queried them a 2nd time (same response) and then a 3rd time. This time they
looked at the URL (finally) and said 1) the post I received WAS NOT from
PayPal and that the URL I'd gone to was not a PayPal web site.

I've since canceled that credit card and changed my PayPal password.

I know we hear a lot about ID theft and until this week I always thought it
happened to the other guy.

May your "before the fact" discernment of spoofed email be better than mine.

Steve Kerney

P.S. The bogus link was an underlined "Click Here" that pointed to
"
"

They then had a 2nd bogus link masquerading behind what looked like a good
link. Check this slight of hand trick out: https://www.paypal.com/us/

Re: Wallstreet II video problem

2004-04-09 Thread Stephen Kerney
Problem solved!

The power manager reset didn't work so I took the sucker apart and removed
every component and cable I could find. And while I was at it I reflowed
some more solder on the power supply board 'cuz the repair job I did a year
or so ago where the power adapter plugs in was starting to show cracks.

After reassembly, powering it up (with some trepidation) was very rewarding.
The screen illuminated faster and the vertical lines are history!

Only downside is I lost my excuse for a new 17" PowerBook. Oh well. Maybe
later this year...

Thanks for the suggestion George.

Wallstreet II video problem

2004-04-08 Thread Stephen Kerney
A used-to-be intermittent video problem showing up on the display of my 14"
Wallstreet is now an all-the-time problem.

What starts out as horizontal "noise" lines during boot seems to rotate 90
degrees at boot-complete-tike manifesting itself as vertical noise lines.

Some months ago when it was intermittent and a reboot or two always made the
noise lines go away.

Now they're here to stay. Any suggestions (e.g., reseat/replace video card,
reseat/replace video ribbon cable, upgrade to 17" G4 PowerBook [my
favorite!], etc)?

I've got a "Picture 1" screen snapshot I can email anyone interested in
seeing a sample desktop with the vertical noise lines (digital pix just
didn't show the lines) or I can ftp it to a web site if G-Books (or similar)
offers such a feature (my website is off line - vendor hard drive failure).

Thanks.

Wireless Wallstreet

2004-03-31 Thread Stephen Kerney
The recent thread about base stations whetted my appetite for wireless.
I've also been longing to break the built-in 10 Meg, half-duplex LAN
limitation I've got so now sounds like a good time to buy once I get my
facts straight.

Today I went to CompUSA to check out the Buffalo that was mentioned and want
to verify a fact I was sold (I mean told).

Assuming I get an 802.11g base station (Apple or otherwise), can I use one
of the faster, "up to 54 Mbps" (ignoring the 108 Mbps flavor out there for
the time being) non-Apple 802.11g PC cards with my 233 MHz Wallstreet II and
if so, can I expect to see greater than 10 Mbps throughput (e.g., LAN file
xfer) or do I have to live with the slower Apple-only "internal" card as the
CompUSA sales rep indicated and just live with the 10 Meg 1/2 duplex
limitation enjoying the wireless freedom but not a theoretical 5 fold one
way speed increase?

I'd hate to buy an 802.11g PC card and find it doesn't work or get one the
works but have 1 Mbit throughput!

Thanks.

OpenGL on a Wallstreet II

2004-01-15 Thread Stephen Kerney
Is OpenGL supported for Mac OS 10.x on a Wallstreet II and if so, where
can I obtain it for installation? I find OpenGL extensions et all my
Mac OS 9 partition but the only OpenGL item I find on my 10.2.8
partition is a "framework" entry. All the "system" OpenGL files seem
to be missing.
