Re: REPOST: How can I connect Wallstreet II/ OS 9.2.2 to iBook 500/ OS X 10.3.9?

Stanton Mitrany wrote:

Dear List-mate,

I didn't get a single response to this inquiry when I posted it a few weeks
ago; perhaps you can at least point me in the right direction?!

I imagined this was an easy question, but I've never done it, and don't know
how.

How do I connect two PowerBooks, a Wallstreet II running OS 9.2.2 and an
iBook 500, running OS X 10.3.9 to one another, so that I can copy files from
one to the other?

Here's the equipment I have available to me which might prove useful:

- USB A-B cables and a Belkin USB hub

- straight and crossover ethernet cables,

- D-Link DWL Wireless USB adapter,

- 2 USB Bluetooth adapters- a D-Link Bluetooth DBT-120, and a Mitsumi
CE0197,

- Belkin 802.11B PCMCIA CardBus Wireless Notebook Network Card F506020.

I have a network setup in my home and the Quicksilver 2002, wallstreet
II, 8600 upgrade, and the PC are all talking just fine to each other. I
would suggest getting an inexpensive hub to connect everything together
and then just turn it on. Whoa not quite that simple. First go to this
web page and read his networking article it will help you a lot. Just
disregard the PC stuff. It is now doable with the included software in
OS X. It is just a pain to get it configured right from the PC side to
the Macintosh. The biggest problem the you will find is that you have to
hard boot both machines for them to recognize each other on the network.
If you still have problems after reading this article contact me and I
will help you through it step by step. All you need is time and patience.

Re: Problem with Wallstreet HD install

2005-06-23 Thread Steven Haack
Since it will boot to the Cd with the old drive in the computer I would
say the problem is with the formatting of the drive in the G4 machine. I
would bet that the OS on that machine is X and that would cause the
problem. I would try a machine with OS 9(not classic) first too format
the HD and then try it. If you don't have that see what you have
available to hook the drive to the computer and then format it that way.

I haven't tried the metal strip because I thought this
was related only to sleep issues and newer drives did
not have the problem. Could be wrong.

I tried to boot with a os 9 disk, my diskwarrior disk
and even os 8 to no avail.

It seems to be a problem with booting from the cd. I
can do it with the old drive, but not the new. Should
it be possible to boot without a hd in the computer -
with just a start up disk? Or does the computer have
to see a hd even if there is no OS on it? Maybe there
is something wrong with the new drive.

I did follow this thread and I think that the CD drive is bad for some
reason. You shouldn't have all those problems to boot from a startup CD
specially that you tried many of them. Of course, it's had to be sure until
you replace the CD drive. You don't have to have a hard disk with a system
on it to boot from a startup CD.

neat work-around I like it. Yes this should work

John Abraham wrote:

Hi There,

I install a Seagate 40 Gb HD in my Wallstreet 233 MHz plus 512 Mb of
ram and had no problems with installing OS 10,1. I have 4
partitions one which is a LInux partition, now this one did prove a
problem but that's another story.

The same Wallstreet now has a 300 MHz CPU and running under 10.2.8.

One thing that I did find out is the Wallstreet is an Old World Mac
Computer, This means it is reluctant to boot from the CD drive
whilst pressing the C key on start up.

If I remember what I had to do was as follows:

1. With the original HD in, place the OS X install CD in the CD
drive. Make sure it mounts on to the desktop.

2. Go into OS 9 extensions and select START UP DISK. When you see
the options ie: HD and OSX install disc select the OS X disc and
reboot. You should now be running on the OS X install disc. If I
remember correctly as it is now running from the CD what you do with
the HD will not affect it at the moment.

I then shut the computer down with the OS X disc still in the drive.
I then changed the HD, rebooted and it still ran from the install CD.

After this I partitioned the HD with the OS X install disc,
remembering the first partition has to be under 8 Gb as this is where
you will install the operating system.

When you have installed your operating system just reselect start up
disc from the install CD to now access the new OS X system partition
and reboot.

You should now be at the administration screen of your new system.
Just set the admin name and password and to the desktop you should go.

I hope those works for you as it has been a couple of years since I
did it and mine has worked OK since.

Good Luck

Lock folders

2005-04-21 Thread Steven Haack
there is a way to do this in terminal as stated in the missing mac
manual but I choose not to do it. Instead I booted into OS 9 (not
classic) and trashed the folder there. All other attempts to trash the

do I want Mozilla instead?
I went to the netscape site and their weren't any options for mac/OS so I
did the download now and got a file linker.jsp...it won't open...duh!
sigh
I am now down on my pb-lombard
Does my G3 beige have a name like Kanga? cool!
Kristina
mac user since SE 30 /1989...really!

You will have to root around netscape but you will find a page listing
all there web browsers and the OS that they support. I believe that
V7.0.1 is the highest for OS 8.6 and 9.1. I would suggest upgrading to
9.2.1 It is the most stable of all version prior to 10.2 and above FWIW

acrobat

2004-11-20 Thread Steven Haack
It sounds like the CD is dirty. Try copying the file to the desk top and
then install it.

Finder window pic

2004-06-28 Thread Steven Haack
It is real and it is a finder window. In 10.2 open a window from the
desk top and select icon view. At this point you will be able to select
preference for the window and choose a picture from the choices from the
bottom of the list. There are a number of available pic's to choose
from. There are no options for the pic. This was a new an unknown
feature for me. The line that I think is in question is at the bottom
and right sides and that would be for the scroll bars the left side is
missing this feature and therefore make the bleed of the pic. extend off
to the right and looks funny.
