Re: Wallstreet vs Canon PowerShot camera Help
Norm, I have a Canon s110, and a Pismo PB. It's much faster to use the CF PC-card reader/writer than the USB cable. The reader should be about $10 or so and it fits in your PB PC-card slots when not in use. Hope this helps, Vic I'm considering purchasing a Canon PowerShot digital camera and I have a Wallstreet II, better known as a PDQ version 2.2. The following statement is quoted from Canon: Interface: USB: Cable connection via camera's USB port is limited to genuine Apple Computer brand models with a built-in USB interface (Power Macintosh NEW G3/G4, PowerBook G3, iMac, iBook). What I think they are saying is I cannot use my PDQ with their camera, since it does not have a built-in USB interface. I do have a USB PC card installed and it works with anything that I tried. Any input would be appreciated. Norm Kamp -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... More wireless questions
Greetings everyone, I have several more questions about the whole 802.11b thing: 1-Can someone explain why the D-link Wi-Fi D-614+ router is claiming 22mbs? Can any macs reach this speed with the current airport card? 2- Is there any way to secure my wireless router? (keeping other people from surfing on my line?) Are there software that allows me to track activity on my router? 3- What are the latest predictions on when Apple will jump on the 802.11a bandwagon? (54mps?) Re: iBook vs. PowerBook
Kimberly, First of all, congratulations on medical school. I finished Architecture school about a year ago and took a different approach to the computer requirement. Since architecture school was a 5 year program, I knew that my machine would be obsolete in 3 years. So consider that you may need to buy TWO computers in your academic career just to be able to run the software you need. Also, consider that you actually need a powerful computer at the end of school (thesis), instead of near the beginning. I entered architecture school with a 180mhz 3400c with 48 megs of RAM in 1997. In 1999 I upgraded the machine to 144 megs. In 2000, I bought a 400mhz Pismo/389 megs the term before my Thesis project. At the end of the term, I was able to do more work than my classmates with a 5-year old 9600. Have you tried execute a thesis project on a 5 year-old computer? It's really painful!! By the way, my friends 9600 cost him MORE than my 3400 and Pismo combined! So I would recommend buying the cheapest powerbook you can afford that meets the standards for school. Then buy a second low-end PB in your senior year. You will recoup at least 30% of the value (hopefully more) of your first PB to buy the second PB. The slowest Powerbook 3 years from now will still me MUCH faster than the fastest/most expensive PB today. Good Luck, Vic Duong PS- your IMAC is probably fast enough to start you out in school if you max out the RAM and add an airport card. Things like running your RAM disk will speed up Photoshop. I'm going to assume that most of the required software will be able to run just fine in OS 9. Then when the required software becomes only avaliable in OS X, then upgrade your machine. I'm going to guess that is another year away. I'm starting medical school in the fall, and looking to get a laptop to replace my iMac DV (400 MHz, 128 MB RAM, OS 9.2) that I bought in January of 2000. For what I currently do with the computer (usual email, web browsing, word processing, and digital photo editing), the iMac is actually almost sufficient except for it's small amount of RAM. The photo editing is a bit slow, but I'm not working with huge files so it's usable. So that makes me lean towards the iBook. BUT. I'm slightly concerned about investing in a computer for the next 3-4 years that is already the only computer in Apple's line to still use the G3 processor. To be short, what it sort of comes down to is that the Powerbook costs 33% more than an iBook. Will it be usable an extra year for a medium user like myself? Of course I would appreciate the better screen and faster performance, but not sure I can justify the extra money if it's not likely to outlast the iBook in terms of becoming obsolete. Re: connecting cable modem
Kate, I just got online with ATT Broadband, and could not for the life of me, register through the cable modem. I got the unable to connect window also. I tried connecting on my rev A I-mac and Pismo with no luck. Tired the TCP/IP control panel along with Apple talk and other confgurations. I finally called a ATT tech out to my house to hook me up. He ended up using his PC laptop to get me up and running. So in summery, call a technician out to your house. Good luck, Vic I just got cable internet installed todaywell I shouldn't say installed exactly, but there is a wire poking out of the wall! The installer had said I had to call tech support because they couldn't leave me a cd since I have a mac. I called tech support to see how to get online and they just said they would send a technician out. When I said I could probably do it myself if they would just give me a few tips, they said to type sas.r4.attbi.com in my brower url field and try to register online. As you may guess, I got an unable to connect window. Do I really have to have someone come to the house to get connected? Oh, by the way, this is ATT Broadband. Re: Broadband hardware
Thanks everyone for your responses! It's been extremely helpful to hear all the pros and cons, including experiences. I was given a MSN broadband modem a few months ago. It's an Arescom Model ND860VUE-MSN. I assume those MS folks want me to use their service, so they sent me a modem. My question is: Could I use this for a Cable modem with ATT instead? I know this is unsupported on their list of approved modems, but aren't modems pretty much similar? By the way, there is a software install CD. Couldn't I just hook up my Powerbook to the modem without any software? There is no cable jack on the rear of the modem, just a jack that looks like a telephone jack labeled DSL on it. The other jacks on the rear are USB, Ethernet, and power. I understand that ATT will install a cable end in my house, so is there any way to convert a cable into a telephone style jack? Re: Good, inexpensive digital camera
Sony offers the DSC-S75, a 4 MP camera with a black body. It's pretty slick. Almost got one myself, but opted for the Canon s110 Elf. I love how small the camera is, and take it with me everywhere. All of Sony's camera are great. The biggest advantages of the designs come from their experiences with the digital camcorder line. Most higher end Sony cameras now have Ziess lens. I would also highly recommend any Sony. The best thing I love about digital cameras is the ability to share images. My wedding photo was shot digitally and was shared among all our guests instantly across the country over the net. Then we mailed each guest a CD of the full 500+ images of our wedding for 33 cents per disk. That is not possible with regular film. Vic In a message dated 4/19/02 8:16:02 PM, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: Speaking of expensive (:--)), has anyone tried, or seen (in person) the new Sony DSC-F707? It received some good reviews (speed-wise) on the dpreview.com site. I purchased a Sony DSC-S70 about a year ago, a 3.34MP camera with a Zeiss lens. I use it professionally in my marketing/advertising business, and have been VASTLY satisfied with both the quality of the photos and the versatility of the camera itself. I recently photographed about 300 pieces of Middle Eastern antiquities using the macro mode and was amazed at the clarity of the images using only natural light in the room... extreme detail, very sharp. Yes, there IS a lag, esp. depending on the resolution of the image/size of the file being stored; but I no longer have drawers of photos/negatives I have to go through... I have the images all stored on disk, ready to use without scanning. I'd recommend my Sony camera without hesitation, but I don't think they're making that particular model any longer... perhaps the new models have the Zeiss lens? Re: OT topic of film vs. digital
I still shoot both ways out there in the real world, but I cringe and moan when the client insists on film. Interesting comment, my wife and I didn't even consider any photographer that refused to shoot digitally for our wedding. I read something the other day that a lot more couples are insisting digital photographers for their wedding. vic -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Olympus D-370L 1.3M digicam for $95 after coupon 11:49 am OfficeMax.com and OfficeMax retail stores offer the Olympus D-370L 1.3-megapixel digital camera for $119.98. Use a $25 off $100 coupon if available to you to knock the net price to $94.98. With free shipping, it's the lowest total price we've seen on this camera. Features include 1.5-inch LCD, 1280x960 resolution, 4x digital zoom, 2MB internal memory, and USB connectivity. Just to add my experience to the pot. I have been using an Olympus dl360 for a couple of years $300. Not super high res or firewire, (but quick to download with a USB reader - $40.) Does everything I need - ebay pix, emailable JPEGs for friends, super closeups to 4 inches and macro even closer when needed; good battery service on 4 rechargeable AA's. The camera can also be plugged directly into a TV and do its own slideshow very elegantly. Re: Good, inexpensive digital camera
My first digital camera was the old Apple QuickTake 7 years ago. The resolution was 600x800, not even 1 megapixel. I was able to use it to print fairly large architectural pictures of my models in college. As Bruce mentioned, it's the optics, AND it's the skills of the user that determines good pictures. I still use my old quicktake for quick web pics. We use an old 1.3 MP D-360 in the office for site photos and it still takes great pictures. So if 1.3MP good enough for a graphic design firm, then its good enough for most people. The whole megapixel issue is kind of like the Mac/PC Mhz myth. Buy a quality camera over quantity. But most important, have fun with your new camera! Vic Duong 1.3 Megapixels, I feel, is not good enough for average photograhy. For web stuff, fine. 2.1 is kind of a minimum, I feel, to decent photography. The weird part is that I have seen 1.3 megapixel pictures printed out that are great. I wonder how they do that?? I have a 2 megapixel camera and it's ok. I have seen some nice 1 MP pictures though. Aron -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and...
