Re: Memory for Wallstreet

2004-03-01 Thread Wayne Schneck
Be careful about the memory in the Wallstreet. I was only able to get
256 total (2 - 128 chips, Kingston) ram work in my Wallstreet 233,
which also had a Powerlogix 466 upgrade card installed. There have been
many listers that reported successfully using the larger 512 chips and
some reporting 2 - 512 working. Since Apple only certified the
Wallstreet for 192 mb ram, you are really on your own. Most reputable
vendors will take the memory back either in exchange or credit.

As far as I know, no one ever offered an answer why some people could
and some couldn't make the higher ram work.

Re: USB to ethernet

2004-02-26 Thread Wayne Schneck
Does anyone know if there is a Mac compatible (Mac OSX) usb-ethernet
adapter that would work with a usb printer. The idea is to hook the
printer to the ethernet port of the D-Link wireless router to use with
our wireless notebooks.

I can use a wireless usb print server, but I want to investigate a more
economical solution (if there is one). Thanks for all the help in
advance.

Re: OT: Internet Service Provider?

2004-02-26 Thread Wayne Schneck
Net Zero has giving me nothing but trouble. I tried to use them for my
Mom and her Imac, after their site crashed twice trying to sign up, we
went and renewed her back in Earthlink. Then a few weeks go by and she
received a welcome letter to Net Zero, we replied that we had not
finished the application process, but if it did go through by some
miracle, then we wanted to cancel since we did not use it at all. A few
more weeks go by and the same email comes back, we cancelled again by
email and also on their website.

We never saw any charges for 2 months on her credit card, then on the
3rd month, she was charged for all 3 months (and we never signed on for
their service). We have been fighting this ever since.

One more note about Net Zero, in order to speak with a live person for
any reason, you have to use a toll number which costs $1.98/ minute and
is charged automatically to your phone bill.

Sorry for the rant, but I am steamed about Net Zero and their policies.

Re: iBook and Airport

2004-02-25 Thread Wayne Schneck
I have a 700 iBook with Airport card, the family iMac is wired to the
D-Link wireless router via ethernet and the iBook and wife's Dell use
the wireless.

The D-Link systems have worked very well and I have found D-Link to be
more Mac friendly than Linksys.

All you will need is a wireless router with ethernet and you can attach
your B&W and the broadband modem directly. Then your Airport card can
be used wirelessly.

Re: Ebay G5 query

2004-02-24 Thread Wayne Schneck
There was a similar auction running here (US) on ebay for then the
latest G4 towers. If you one (and I think everyone who bid probably was
contacted by seller and given the info if you paid) you received the
email instructions to get a "low cost, new G4".

One thing that was a red flag, they only accepted money order or
checks. So if you received your email and the info was bogus, you lost
your money.

Be careful of things to good to be true, especially Macintosh products
on ebay. I think I read that the Macintosh products (the powerbooks in
particular) were the leading scam products.

Re: WallStreet RAM upgrade question

2004-02-24 Thread Wayne Schneck
I was not able to get to 512 ram even with name brand ram in my
Wallstreet. This was probably due (in part) to the Powerlogix upgrade
card I also installed. Some readers have reported having the upgrade
card and the 512 ram, while others had the same problems. As far as I
know, no one really found the answer. I went back to 256 total ram and
the Wallstreet was fine.

Just make sure you can return the ram if for some reason it doesn't
work. Typically, any reputable company allows for return/exchange. Good
luck!

Re: weird email

2004-02-17 Thread Wayne Schneck
I have received one delivery failed notice email which I did not
originally send. There was an attachment listed as a partial email
that was saved (in a folder). Inside was a .exe file, not an email,
partial or otherwise, so this was probably some Win virus. Just trashed
it and went on.

Re: Uninstall for Panther

2004-02-12 Thread Wayne Schneck
Hey Everybody:

Does anyone know if there is a reliable uninstall program that works
for Panther, or is it built into the system itself (like Windows). I
have some trial stuff that I installed and the discs do not have an
uninstall function. Back in os9, you could use Spring Cleaning if you
were very careful about what you were deleting, is there something else
anyone has used and can recommend?

Thanks.

Re: PB G3 Blacks out, won't restart

2004-02-12 Thread Wayne Schneck
Here are the companies I found which repair powerbooks:

powerbookguy.com
pbparts.com
powerbooktech.com
powerbookmedic.com
wegenermedia.com
Most of these companies also sell pulled parts in working condition if
you feel like undertaking the repair yourself. I think the flat rate
for service was about $75, plus what the parts costs.

Re: PB G3 Blacks out, won't restart

2004-02-12 Thread Wayne Schneck
Kevin:

This same problem cropped up with my Wallstreet. In the beginning, it
was only one or two forced restarts, then it was fine. By the time I
ripped all my hair out in frustration, it was taking up to 30 (yes, 30)
forced restarts. I went through the usual suspects; ram, processor
board, re-install system, etc. The culprit was the PMU unit, located
under the left palm rest. Since it required a complete disassembly of
the computer, I opted to purchase a new one, but there are several
companies that replace this for a flat repair charge plus part costs.

Hope this helps.

Re: G3/Mac OS X Settlement

2003-10-28 Thread Wayne Schneck
I received the full settlement report from the lawyers. As a mac
supporter, I threw the hole thing in the trash. Class action suits
benefit the law offices that file more than the actually participants
since they get there cut from the over-all settlement amount, or their
high fees are paid on top of the settlement. These law offices
regularly seek ways to design a class action and then lobby for
participants.

There are some legitimate suits filed, but most of the ones I come
across are questionable if there was actually any wrong doing by the
corporation they are seeking damages from. In many cases, it is easier
and cheaper for the company to settle instead of fight the suit.

I did not use OSX regularly on my Wallstreet, but purchased it with the
desire to trial it and learn it at my own pace, using OS9 for actual
work. I will not add to Apple's cost for this one, since, in the end,
we all pay for it in higher costs to the company.
