After unsubscribing and resubscribing there, I'm still receiving posts but unable to post myself. So far, nobody's got a reason why. I'm hopeful this'll get worked out soon, but for now the Maclaunch list is the only one to which I can post. The big quirk with Google Groups is that when you make a post, it won't send it to your inbox. It goes to the rest of the world, but it refuses to send you a copy of your own post. Re: How fast is the Code in OS X: 10.2 vrs. 10.3 vrs. 10.4 ???
Having used both OS's on a WS I and a WS II, I have to agree. Panther corrected a number of issues both Wallstreets I used had with Jaguar. To be completely honest, I was basing my recommendation on my lackluster experience with Jag on my Lombard, and the insane stability of Panther on both a friend's AlBook, and my grandpa's Mac mini. Re: Battery Problems Solved!!!
If you left the lombard unplugged with the dead battery in it, how did the battery get charged ? What exactly was the symptom of the dead battery ? Mad Dog The battery had a full charge before it started acting weird. It would show no charge on the lights and a full charge according to the OS, then it'd show nothing on the OS and full according to the LEDs. It was plugged in for three weeks non-stop, before I left it sitting out, so that could've been a contributor, as well. Caleb -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: iBook as Desktop
I used a 15-inch Al PB as a desktop machine and was happy with the result. I put the book on the far side of the desk on a stand higher than the desktop so that it was at eye level. I used Bluetooth mouse and keyboard. It worked very well. Sometimes the small screen would create limitations, especially when trying to use more than one program at a time. Otherwise it worked great. That's my only problem that I've run into when using my Lombard as a desktop, as well. Of course, I've got a 17 LCD monitor that I can pull from my PC desktop for those times. Caleb -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... My bank, Regions (formerly Union Planters here in Florida) TOTALLY supports Safari, Firefox and OmniWeb as well as Internet Explorer. The same down here. All the local banks here are fully Mac compatible, including mine, which only has offices here, and in one other place in the world, that just happens to be the next town over. The funny thing is that there are less than two dozen Mac users in town, that I know of. Out of all my friends and people I know from school, there are only three others I know of who use Macs. Re: Website compatibility
It isn't a matter of supporting Macs but of supporting standards for HTML. The idea that a web site has to be all bells and whistles is absurd. There was a period where every time I went surfing I'd hit at least one site that needed the latest version of flash or some other crud just so they can have flames or something stupid on the page. It got real frustrating. The rate of change has fortunately slowed somewhat so you have a chance really doing something most of the time. I remember those times all too well. In fact, there are a couple of sites that I used to check on my Linux box that I can't on my Lombard, because it can only take Flash version 7 instead of 8... Why? There's been a 1.3.1 build available for years. http://wamcom.org/ Try the latest beta of iCab. I think there's some details in wamcom.org. It's not simply a recompilation issue -- you'd need to rewrite some code. A: Wamcom was pretty unstable with 9.1, but I'll try it again with my 9.2.2 install. B: I'll try the latest iCab build and get back to you on that. I still think iCab is slower at rendering than Mozilla 1.2, but that's just IMHO. Re: Compiling Firefox on Mac OS 9
You can't, AFAIK. It's not a matter of just compiling it, or there would be ports readily available. It was a lot of work just to get the WamCom port running, there's a reason that one's been abandoned. Well, thanks for that info. I remember reading that on the wamcom site when I went to download their Mozilla build. I'm just stubborn, I guess. Firefox dependent on stuff that just isn't available for OS 9, you would have to rewrite a huge amount of the app. And, as someone who has barely started learning C++, it won't be me rewriting that huge amount. :p Get OS X...you're not JUST getting a modern browser, trust meOS X is SO much better than OS 9 it's not even funny. I know OS X is better than 9, and it has support for my lovely Aria Extreme wireless card, but I'll have to settle for the $20 OWC Jaguar set, and that'll be next week before I'll have a paycheck to purchase that with. Trust me, I'm not running 9 by choice, but by necessity. In fact, my Lombard had Jaguar on it when I bought the thing off eBay, but Jag tanked on me, forcing me to use Drive Setup on the OS 9 recovery disc that came with it. *grrr* Caleb -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: Lombard frying batteries???
Caleb, did you reset the PMU? Resetting the Power Manager PowerBook G3 Series (Bronze Keyboard)computers have a reset button located on the back of the computer behind the I/O door. Press the button once to reset the power manager. I'll try that right now. I remember doing it before, but that was after I accidentally kicked the plug out of the wall before I got the NewerTech battery. The PMU is located (AFAIK) on the main logic board. There is a separate Power Supply Card (separate from the Sound Card which contains the power-in jack), located under the trackpad. I'm not sure exactly how (or if) its failure can lead to the symptoms you've described. I'm pretty sure that the Power Supply Card would take the whole machine out with it, if it's as you describe it. *Not not-all-that-helpful advice* Really, the best thing to have in this sort of situation is a second identical complete working PowerBook. Re: Partitioning my Lombard OS9.2.2
I just got my Lombard back from Wegener's...took them 6 weeks to put a 30g HD and transfer my data, which they failed to mention was a 35.00 in addition to the 50 bucks to look at it. Ouch. It takes maybe two hours to do it yourself, if you're handy with a screwdrier. I didn't realize that transferring data from a 6g partitioned HD takes several hours of tech time. gee I didn't either. Then again, I've only swapped hard drives on PeeCees and PowerBook 190s... Anyway I have a new HD and apparently a new System...but no partitions. I like the partitions because I could run DiskWarrior from another partition. It's time to drag out that old OS 9 install CD and run Disk Utility. It's your only way of doing so, as far as I know. Re: format for video
Did you try the Streaming/Exporting Wizard in VLC? Looking at the available formats, there's MPEG-1, 2 and 4, and H.264, among others. I think MPEG-4 and H.264 will only play in QT Pro, but wouldn't MPEG-1 and -2 open in standard QT? You've got it backwards. MPEG4 and H.264 play in standard QT 7, but MPEG 1 and 2 are part of a $20 MPEG playback upgrade, that isn't even part of Pro, AFAIK. MPEG-4 has been part of QT since QT6, which is on the ever-faithful Lombard running OS 9.2.2.. Remember, iTunes requires the QT libraries for playback and Apple's AAC codec is based on MPEG-4. Lombard frying batteries???
Dear listers, This is the second time I've had to email NewerTech support about replacing a battery, in the past month, but I'm starting to wonder if it's not my Lombard that's causing my battery problems, instead of the batteries themselves. I know the charging board is good on it, AFAIK, and the batteries did quit showing up as charged, with a corresponding light on the LED indicators on the side of the battery. Still, it's curious as to how a good company can send me two bad batteries in a row, without the possibility of a machine problem.. Well, hopefully you'll all have some good advice for me, Caleb P.S. Re: Lombard frying batteries???
I dont know why, but I have had _zero_ luck bringing any third party WS or lombard batteries back to life. BTI or Newertech. Well, I called NewerTech and they think it's a bad PMU, but I still want a second opinion. They did say that they could get approval for another replacement, if I wanted to, however. So, are there any other symptoms of a bad PMU other than fried batteries? I really don't want to ship my machine off, because it's got all my stuff on it, and it's got a couple of cracks in the lower case, and one to the left of the LCD on the inside of the lid that I don't want to stress any more than I have to. Also, before I forget, does anyone know the keyboard combination to force the fans to come on, because I suspect that mine has a bad fan, as well. *sighs as he's planning on spending the price of a used TiBook to get the Lombard fixed* Caleb -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: Lombard frying batteries???
Mate Not sure what you are saying here ... You are spending money like buying a Ti to repair a Lombard - WHY ? There is no PMU board on a Lombard - so what is being replaced/repaired ? Even if you are sending it away, take yer HD out - really easy in a Lombard ! A: I like the Lombard/Pismo form factor much better than the TiBook form factor. Also, the Lombard, if I spread the upgrades out over a long enough time, it'll pay for itself in productivity. Plus, the Lombard is much easier to upgrade... B: I had no clue that there was no PMU on the Lombard. Thanks for telling me. C: I know how easy it is to remove a HD on a Lombard, and I've rebuilt a PB 190 from parts, so I know how to do that stuff. Re: format for video/MPEG-2 Playback Component
As Caleb incorrectly posted, MPEG-1 playback is and has been built-in to Quicktime for many versions. Eh, I got it halfway right, at least. I've never had reason to work with MPEG-1, so I was playing the guessing game there. The MPEG-4 stuff is all correct, though. Amber, I'd try opening them with Windows Media Player, if you've got it. It's a miserable piece of horribly buggy code, but it does work, some of the time. As Phil said, VLC usually does a pretty decent job, or it has on my Linux box with plenty of horsepower and disk space.. Caleb -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... The listers will mostly follow it over; visitors to LEM will find it; and anyone unaware of either may also find it simply thru googling. (My ancient PB 190 can't handle SSL for email, and it locks up when loading Google Groups) However, I just haul out the G3 and all's good. It's a smart move, from an administrator's standpoint. Re: broken airport with many open 802.11 networks still

The only problem with that is getting one that works with OS X. I believe the ones with the Ralink chipset have drivers for OS X, but not the others. I haven't a clue about the broadcom stuff, though. By the way, to refute a statement made in an earlier post about Airport not being industry standard, it actually is. It's a stock Broadcom bcm43xx series chipset. Now, if Apple would backport the Airport Extreme drivers to OS 9, I'd be happy.. Caleb -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and...
