I bought an 8 oz. bottle of Klear Screen in 1992 (!) and it is still
about half full. You only have to use an extremely small amount each
time (best to spray it on the cloth first rather than on the screen).

I even still have one of the two supplied cotton cloths. I would
still have the other one but I used it to clean a TV (CRT) screen and
it picked up a huge amount of very fine blackish dirt (kind of like
what gets deposited on or near a negative ion generator).

However, I have to say that I am pretty tempted to not take any

Re: Cleaning wipes for PB

2005-12-19 Thread shawn
Get the clear screen, I avoided spending the money for a long time but
is worth it, the only other thing I ever used on my iBook was the
cleaning cloths(dry) used for eyeglasses with the glare resistant
coating, but the clear screen stuff works perfectly and you can get
individual packs of it (like hand wipe packages) for around $12 for a
pack of 15 I believe.

Just my 2 cents

Re: Cleaning wipes for PB

2005-12-19 Thread Howard Katz
Another way to help keep your laptop screen clean is to get some of
those clear plastic screen overlay sheets. Macally sells some
(http://www.macally.com/spec/specialties/accessories/screenprotector.html)
and I've got one on my 15 AL right now.

They may not be as cheap as the Kleer Screen wipes, but they do offer
a layer of buffer protection against dirt, and also against keyboard
imprint too.

Baby wipes are real all-purpose, but I find it interesting that the
small amounts of aloe or other moisturizers wouldn't leave any film
on an LCD screen.

Use either Klear Screen or HoodWipes, which were designed for cleaning the
screen and the HoodWipes work wonders on the outside of a laptop also.

Don't be such cheap skates, you get 12 HoodWipes for $11 and on my Pismo the
cleaning lasts for a month or so, on both the screen and the case.

Re: Cleaning wipes for PB

2005-12-19 Thread Caleb Cupples
I know that feeling. I can actually watch the dust build up on my
Lombard. Needless to say, it gets a lot of dusting off..

Tom, you don't realise that some of us can't afford to use those
HoodWipes. I know that I couldn't, simply because I'm a student with an
insanely low budget. Heh, I used a PB 190 until a couple of weeks ago,
when I got the Lombard, so that should be a sign. In all reality, I
just say use what works for you, on your budget. I like baby wipes,
because they're insanely cheap.

Use either Klear Screen or HoodWipes, which were designed for
cleaning the
screen and the HoodWipes work wonders on the outside of a

laptop also.

Don't be such cheap skates, you get 12 HoodWipes for $11 and

on my

Pismo the
cleaning lasts for a month or so, on both the screen and the

case.

Re: Cleaning wipes for PB

2005-12-19 Thread shawn
You can go into an eyeglass store and get the dry microfiber cloth
wipes for a couple of bucks like I do and use those for most cleanings,
take it from a low income IT person that just graduated with a 2yr and
already has three mouths to feed cheapest way is better, but dont use
vinegar or harsh cleansers because they are lying around (I know these
are extremes but you get the hint), the repair to the screen will
really screw up your budget.

The Apple Store sells both.

Here's how they describe iClean at the Apple website:

# Alcohol-free, ammonia-free formula removes dust, dirt, and
fingerprints without damaging your display's protective coating.

# Liquid gel will not drip into delicate electronics.
# Contains a special polymer to protect your display, while reducing
static electricity that attracts dust.
# Special MicroFiberT cloth gently polishes your display without
scratching it.

Cleaning wipes for PB

2005-12-18 Thread AMBER K

Hi,
Just wondering if anybody has used the Allsop Clear View Wipes for
cleaning your PB and screen ? Are they okay to use ?

I did see the more expensive iMonster and iKlear solutions but of
course they were more than twice as expensive as this canister of 100
pre-moistened wipes.

It does say on the side that they are okay for laptops but just wanted
to be sure.

Thanks,

Amber

Re: Cleaning wipes for PB

2005-12-18 Thread Harry Corsover
Are you sure it's safe to use alcohol wipes on laptop screens? I
thought they had a coating that would be damaged by alcohol. I've
been using Klear Screen, which states alcohol and ammonia free on
their web site.

Hi,
Just wondering if anybody has used the Allsop Clear View Wipes for
cleaning your PB and screen ? Are they okay to use ?

I did see the more expensive iMonster and iKlear solutions but of
course they were more than twice as expensive as this canister of 100
pre-moistened wipes.

It does say on the side that they are okay for laptops but just
wanted

to be sure.

Thanks,

Amber

I use them on my iBook screen, they are convenient and work well.

Re: Cleaning wipes for PB

2005-12-18 Thread AMBER K
Hi Harry,

I was wondering about that too as those Allsop wipes state they
have alcohol in them.

I went to Best Buy today and unbelievably, the Geek Squad guy told
me to go to Canadian Tire and buy degreaser (Liquid Green ?) to
clean the screen. I can't imagine how horrible that would be for it.

His next option was windex. Fortunately, I know neither of these
would be a good choice but worry about other customers who may
well do serious damage to their laptops by following his advice.

It seems the safest solution is the iKlear stuff as you suggest.

Thanks !

Now, here's my $0.02, but I've used several different methods to clean
laptop screens over the years, but I've had no problems using rubbing
alcohol. However, I've not tried this on my Lombard, or anything newer
than my old 190, so I don't know how it'd affect the newer screens.

Non-alchohol baby-wipes. they're also good for cleaning ink off your
printer.

I actually just tried that on my Lombard, and I've been pleasantly
surprised. It's kinda interesting what homebrew remedies that we Mac
users can come up with, given the resources.

Now, if anyone will come up with a cheap way to power my Lombard
without an AC adapter for 3-5 hours and without a new 'battery', I'd be
grateful. :D

I misspoke earlier. The wet wipes I use are not Allsop but are Nice'n
Clean anti-static cleaning wipes. They contain low amounts of alcohol
and can be purchased at Wal-mart in the electronics department.

Yep, you want to stay away from any product with alcohol. You won't see the
damage right away but after a while, your screen will start having some kind
of a haze and at that time, it's too late...
